The author fully supports the ideas of Werner Jaeger who believed that educational science rested on pedagogical ideas, writings, innovations, and achievements of the sophists. The sophists are treated as the founders of educational research and practice, who were the first to accept the importance of education (paideia), who attempted to theoretically generalize and substantiate the role paideia played in human life, its aims, objectives, and its content.

The paper deals with the transfer from Antique ideas of self-concern to Christian and Medieval ones, focusing on the concept of self-regeneration. Self-regeneration is treated not as mere rejuvenation but rather as physical and spiritual transformation that brings about new aims of self-education. The article focuses on the realization of the cura sui principle in modern Italian research, which follow the traditional interpretation of the cura sui principle expressed in M.Foucault’s and M.Heidegger’s works. The author of the article maintains that F.Cambi’s, F.Caputo’s, M.Genarri’s, and other researchers’ interpretation of the cara sui principle reveals its genetic and ontological connections with the Greek concept παιδε ĩ α, the Roman concept humanitas, and the German and common European concept Bildung, which are treated as self-education and self-improvement.
