A Trip for Diplomats On Saturday the UN organized a trip to the Afghan capital Kabul for diplomats who work permanently in Pakistan. Diplomats from the US, Denmark, Britain, Norway, Sweden, Holland, Japan and the European Union became acquainted with the programme of UN humanitarian aid in Ka- bul. Western representatives have promised to go on allotting financial help for such aid programmes but have refused to allocate any funds to Afghan
President Rabani. The UN is trying to effect a peace project whereby President Rabani will hand over power to a multi-party Council. The diplomats also visited the worst-hit regions of the Afghan capital.

URALMASH WORKS: THE GIANT BEGINS TO STIR
EKATERINBURG – Russia's giant heavy engineering works, which has been severly hit by the collapse of the Soviet planned economy, is now vigorously struggling to survive in market conditions. Boris Krasilov, production manager, told Reuters Agency that in 1990 the works cut its staff by half, reducing it from 38,000 to 18,400 employees. The company, which makes various products from excavators to steel-making equipment and oil derricks is now being broken up into divisions which may one day be converted into subsidiary enterprises.

«The division of the firm will go on ... the smaller the enterprise, the easier it is to manage», – says Mr. Krasilov who is also a member of the works management. These are really revolutionary words, if one considers what «Uralmash» really is. Founded in 1933, until recently it has proudly been called «the father of all engineering plants». Almost all the Soviet metallurgical industry and most firms in the oil industry have depended on equipment made here for their operation.
