ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF ENERGY
1 Alternative energy is a term that refers to any source of energy intended to replace fuel sources without the undesired consequences of the conventional fuels. In general, alternative energy is that which is produced without the undesired consequences of the burning of fossil fuels, such as high carbon dioxide emissions, the major factor of global warming.
2 Renewable energy is energy generated from natural resources – such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat – which are renewable. If we compare the processes for producing energy, there remain several fundamental differences between renewable energy and fossil fuels. The process of producing oil, coal, or natural gas fuel requires a lot of complex equipment, physical and chemical processes. On the other hand, alternative energy can be widely produced with basic equipment and naturally basic processes. Wood, the most renewable and available so called «alternative» energy, burns with the same amount of carbon emissions it would emit if it degraded naturally. Waste products of the timber industry, agricultural crops and raw materials from the forest are important energy sources of biomass.

3 But not all renewable energy sources are totally environmentally friendly. For example, the Netherlands, once leader in use of palm oil as a biofuel, has suspended all subsidies for palm oil because large areas of rain wood have been destroyed for its production.
4 Solar power is a promising alternative to fossil fuels, as it gives off no carbon dioxide waste and uses the natural energy from our sun to generate electricity. After the lifetime of the solar panel, the materials that were used to make it could be recycled. Solar power can be used in the development of the 3rd world economies, as it is extremely cost effective in the long run.
