Living in the city

Living in the city has both advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side it is often easier to find work, and there is usually a choice of public transport. Also there are a lot of interesting things to do and places to see. For example, you can eat in good restaurants, visit museums and go to the theater and concerts. When you want to relax you, you can usually find a park where you can feed the ducks or just sit on a park bench and read a book. All in all, city life is full of bustle and variety and you never feel bored.

However, for every plus there is a minus. Living in the city is often very expensive. It’s difficult to find cheap accommodation. What is more, public transport is sometimes crowded, particularly in the rush hour.

City life can be appealing to young people, who like the excitement of the city and don’t mind the noise and pollution. However, many people, when they get older and have young children, often prefer the peace and fresh air of the countryside.

1. What are advantages and disadvantages of living in a city?

2. Where do you prefer to live?

3. Why do young people prefer to live in the city?

4. Why do many elderly people prefer to live in the countryside?

III. Read, translate the text, tell your friend about your street.

My street

I live in a big city. I like living in a big industrial and cultural centre. There are a lot of interesting things here that you can find only in a big town.

I am also happy that the street I live in is not a central one. We live in a new residential district. We moved to a new flat three years ago. It’s very nice to live here because our street is rather quiet. The street is wide. It’s not so busy and noisy as central streets. You cannot see so much traffic here.

Though there are enough trolleybuses and buses to get to the Underground station if you wish to go to the centre of the city or to the Central Park.

The street is very green. It is lined with a lot of trees. And near the houses you can see flowers and bushes which decorate the yard so beautifully.

In our street you can find any shop you need. There are greengroceries, baker’s shops and even flower-shops in the street. Not far from my house there is a nice department store.

I like my street. It’s so nice to have a walk here in the evening after a busy day and we often do so with my friends.

IV. Read the description of Madrid. Which paragraph describes:

- advantages?

- disadvantages?

- basic information?

I live in Madrid which is the capital of Spain and right in the middle of the country. It is a big city with over three million people. Madrid is very hot and sunny in the summer but it is cold in the winter.

Madrid has a lot of problems. The traffic here is terrible and we often have enormous traffic jams. Because of the cars the pollution is sometimes very bad. Also, there is quite a lot of crime here and some places are dangerous at night.

But I love Madrid and there are lots of good things. The people are friendly and the city is never boring. There are lots of things to do and places to go. In the summer we live out of doors and nobody goes to bed early. Madrid is probably the only place in the world which has traffic jams at four or five o’clock in the morning!

V. Read the texts about great cities. Which one would you like to visit and why?

1. Cairo, on the impressive river Nile, is a fascinating city of great contrasts. Arabs founded the city in 641, and it has been the centre of Egypt for centuries. Now it is the largest city in Africa, a busy city full of character, with an exciting mixture of ancient and modern.

In the city there are many magnificent mosques and you can visit the Egyptian Museum to see the wonderful treasures of Tutankhamen. Outside Cairo are the Sphinx and the monumental pyramids, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

On the menu: try specialities like kebabs. Finish off your meal in style with some delicious sweet coffee.

2.Mysterious Cuzcois over three thousand meters high, in the Andes mountains in Peru. It was the prosperous capital of the powerful Inca Empire, which stretched from Colombia to Chile. The Spanish conquered it in 1533, but in historic Cuzco you can still feel the atmosphere of the ancient Inca civilization.

Walk along the ancient streets of Cuzco among the impressive Spanish colonial buildings. Visit the Inca ruins of the Temple of the Sun, or go on a trip to the wonderful lost city of Machu Picchu near Cuzco.

On the menu: try out some tasty papas a la huancaina (potatoes with a cheese sauce). For the main course have some lovely roast lamb.

3.The beautiful city of Venice is built on water which gives it a magical and romantic atmosphere. The merchants founded the city on small islands near to the coast and became very rich and important. The merchants of Venice spent their money building magnificent buildings.

Start off in the superb St Mark’s square and walk around this relaxing and peaceful city (there are no cars!). You will come across many impressive palaces, churches and bridges.

On the menu: try the lovely seafood and you can look forward to tartufo, a rich chocolate and vanilla ice cream, for a delicious dessert.
