Dear Mum and Dad,
Thanks for your letter. I’m glad everybody is OK.
Life’s great at the moment because I have a new job with a company called Vision Design. It’s really interesting and the people I work with are a lot of fun – except the receptionist, Carol. She’s a bit strange. Eve, the boss is really nice. Sometimes after work I go to a pub or a restaurant with them. I work very long hours – but that’s life. I love London now, but it’s very different from Cape Town. It’s so fast.
I live with Pat, a friend from work. She’s great. She’s a designer.
Some of the neighbours are really nice. There’s a family upstairs who are very friendly. Mike, the husband, is a journalist. He works for the BBC and goes abroad a lot. His wife, Sarah, plays the piano and studies music. She teaches the piano in the evenings. Their son, Leo, plays the piano too. He’s only four years old but he plays Mozart! Sarah sometimes invites me round for dinner when Mike’s abroad and we talk for hours.
But the woman in the flat next door - Mrs. Jackson is awful. I always say “hello” to her but she doesn’t speak to me. She just stays in her flat and watches TV.
How’s my little brother Ian? What time does he get up these days? Does he listen to music all day?

IV. Read about Kevin and Damian’s day. Write questions for the answers.
On Saturday Kevin gets up at 9:00 and goes to the library and studies. He comes home at 12:00. At 12:30 he goes into Damian’s bedroom and says “Damian, it’s time to get up”. An hour later, Damian gets up. He has breakfast in the kitchen. Kevin works in his room until 7:00. Damian watches TV from 3:00 to 9:00. At 9:30 he goes to Kevin’s room and says “Kevin , it’s time to go to bed”. At 10:00 Kevin goes to bed and Damian goes out to a nightclub. When Damian comes home at 7:00 in the morning he says ”Kevin, it’s time to get up”. Then Damian goes to bed.

How close are you as a family?
We usually see each other at least once a month, maybe more often. We have lunch together on Sunday if we haven’t got anything special to do. We live in Montpellier, which is about an hour and a half away, but we always come to Marseilles where my mother and father live. It’s not so far. Usually my grandmother and my uncle and aunt are there too – we are quite a large family. Sometimes my brother and his girlfriend come over – they live nearby. The meal takes about four hours, we spend a lot of time chatting and there’s always lots to eat.
There’s no one we call the head of the family, although my father’s advice and opinion are very important in any decisions we take. My uncle Tony is in fact older than my father, so I suppose he’s the real head of the family.
