Oily sludge results from oil treatment and is formed at the bottom of storage tanks and process equipment. Despite the variety of components of oily sludge they are generally characterized by a high concentration of hydrocarbons. Treatment of oily sludge in the centrifuge reduces the concentration of tarry, asphalt compounds and high-melting paraffin and removes water and mechanical mixtures. The resultant product is very close to the original oil. So, the regenerated oil is returned to the original commercial oil stream. Dehydration of sediments in the centrifuge utilizes new technology. This state-of-art technology allows the dehydration of oil containing sediments of waste water safely and efficiently and also, to regenerates oil contained in the oily sludge. ТСО pays a lot of attention to waste treatment. TCO uses modern technology and equipment to minimize the volume of solid waste and decontamination before disposal at the polygons. So, before disposal in the polygon the bottom oil sludge goes through preliminary treatment. After separation process at the centrifuge, the sludge is sent to the stabilization site. The oil sludge stabilization site consists of two 20 meter by 50 meter chambers with a volume of 1000 m3 each. Stabilization of oil sludge is done with use of absorbents with 65 percent concentration silicon oxide and 32 percent calcium oxide. TCO created its own Integrated Waste Management Facility to minimize potential negative consequences of impact of waste on the environment. This facility is situated in a specially allotted site with an area of 100 hectares in the territory of Tengiz Field.

ТСО has its own facilities for disposal of solid municipal and industrial wastes and sites for temporary storage of waste; all built up to international standards. These facilities are: solid municipal wastes landfill and industrial wastes landfill which are parts of the integrated waste management facility. Municipal and non-toxic industrial wastes are disposed in the solid domestic waste landfill. The solid domestic waste landfill is about eight hectares and the capacity is approximately 720,000 m3. Industrial waste is disposed in the specially equipped industrial waste landfill an area about 1.3 hectares, and the capacity is about 80,000 m3. Land use is reduced to the minimum due to layered storage of waste at both landfills. Both landfills consist of several cells with double liners composed of high density polyethylene and geo-membranes. Both landfills have a leak detection system, a filtrate drainage system and filtrate gathering ponds. The solid domestic waste landfill also has a ventilation system that allows for the safe removal of gas resulting from the decomposition process. For the industrial waste landfill there is no need for a ventilation system as there is no process of decomposition of waste. Taking into consideration the limitations of the infrastructure of waste treatment in Kazakhstan, TCO continues to develop its own facilities for waste management. TCO continues to construct cells in the industrial waste polygon, there are plans in place to start up additional reserves of the solid municipal wastes polygon and plans to construct a temporary waste storage site.
