The crude production process at Tengiz generates about 60 different types of waste. Waste varies in origin, composition and hazard class. TCO has developed a Waste Management System to properly handle each type of waste. Waste management and control at TCO facilities is executed by the Waste Management Group within the Environmental Group. Waste is categorized two ways: domestic and industrial. Primary sources of industrial waste are the field facilities (wells, manifolds, metering stations, dispatcher point), external facilities (boiler houses, gas turbine power stations, treatment facilities, and tank farms), gas processing plant and the industrial base. Industrial wastes are produced as the result of production processes and include spent catalysts, molecular sieves, chemical material and used oil. The main sources of domestic waste are the accommodations for the rotational workforce. Domestic wastes are produced in canteens, offices, clinics and places of employee's residence. Most waste formed at Tengizchevroil facilities is collected shortly after being generated. Some waste sorting is performed in our recycling center. At this center, we analyze materials like scrap metal, wood and polymeric material to determine its potential for reuse. Waste packing and marking is important to ensure integrity and safety while waste is being sorted, loaded, transportated and stored. Special attention is given to the packing and marking of hazardous waste. For instance, waste such as used medical materials are packed in sealed polyethylene bags and put in yellow containers. Used alkali and acid electrolyte is poured into special, marked plastic containers. Collection and transportation of waste is executed by contractor organizations.
