Newspapers as a kind of mass media
In the past people learnt about news from newspapers. Nowadays people usually learn what is happening in the country and in the world from TV or radio news programmes or from the Internet. Still we cannot imagine our life without newspapers. There are dozens of them on every news-stand. There are newspapers for professionals, for businessmen, for children and teenagers, for men and women, for sports fans, for those who are interested in gardening and for those who keep pets.
Some newspapers publish serious articles on politics, economy and finance, some aim to entertain their readers. Many newspapers express certain political opinion and people choose them according to their own political beliefs. In short, you can always find a paper which suits your interests. Besides, there are many free local newspapers which are put into your postbox whether you ask for it or not. Probably they are not interesting, because they consist mainly of advertisements, but you can find a lot of useful telephone numbers and addresses there.
My parents subscribe to Argumenty i Facty. I also like this weekly. I don't read all the articles, but in every issue I find something interesting. I think that most articles are very well written, they give a detailed and well-balanced analysis of current events and trends in economy. I like to read articles on social issues, interviews, reviews of new books, plays and TV shows. One of my favourite columns is The Quotation of the Day, where they quote our popular politicians and give their comments. Sometimes it's very funny.
Quite often I buy Sovershenno Secretno (Top Secret) and practically in each issue there are some fascinating stories which you read like a detective story. Sometimes they uncover things I have not heard about, sometimes they show well-known events in a completely new light.
From time to time I read Moskovsky Komsomolets. It's one of the most popular daily papers, but I don't consider it serious. However, I never miss an article written by Minkin. I think he is a very good journalist. I also like Merinov's cartoons. Sometimes they publish good reviews of new films, new CDs and so on.
In short, I think that TV, radio and the Internet have their advantages, but nothing can substitute newspapers.

One language for the whole planet
No doubt that learning languages takes up a lot of time. That is why some people think that it would be better to have only one language on our planet. But will it be really beneficial for mankind?

In my opinion, the reduction of the number of languages is a disaster because it will totally destroy our great cultural heritage. With each loss of a language comes a loss of a culture, a loss of a way of life that deserves to be protected and treated as valuable. I also believe that leaving one language for communication will greatly reduce the linguistic diversity of our planet, which is the key to our survival. What is more, it will be rather difficult to choose which language to use and it may even lead to wars.
Many people think that if we have only one language, communication will become easier and there will be no need to learn foreign languages. I cannot agree with them because knowledge of foreign languages makes a person educated and well rounded. You cannot broaden your mind if you see the world only from the perspective of your own culture. Besides, people are a lot more helpful if you speak their language.
In conclusion, I would argue that we should try our best to preserve the linguistic diversity of our planet. I think that larger cultures should have a respect for minority languages, but first of all the younger generation must want to preserve their native language.
Oxford - the University Town
This university town is very beautiful. The oldest university there is Oxford. The first of its colleges was founded in 1249. The university now has thirty-five colleges and about thirteen thousand students, many of them from other countries.
There were no women at Oxford until 1878. When the first women's college Lady Margaret Hall, opened. Now most colleges are open to men and women. It is not easy to get a place at Oxford University to study for a degree.
But outside the university there are many smaller private colleges which offer less difficult courses and where it is easy to enrol. Most students in these private school take business, secretarial or English language courses.
Oxford is, of course, famous for its first-class education as well as its beautiful buildings. Some of the most intelligent men and women in the country live and work here. Oxford gives them what they need: a quiet atmosphere, friendly colleagues and the four-hundred-year-old library, which has about five million books.

Oxford has same of the finest architecture in Britain. Some of their colleges, chapels and libraries are there, four and even five hundred years old, and are full off books and precious paintings. You can see there many lovely gardens, where the students can read and relax in the summer months.

Picnic
In summer I really enjoy going for a picnic. My family lives not far from a park. In this park, there is a special area, where people can go for a picnic and spend time with great pleasure. Everything there is equipped for it. There are several tents. In case it rains, people can hide there. Moreover, in this zone in the park, there is special equipment for barbecue and grill. It is not very expensive, that`s why a lot of people use it to cook something delicious.
My parents and I go for a picnic in a park practically every weekend, when the weather is good. We enjoy spending time there. In the city, there are not so many places, where you can have a rest from city fuss. Having a picnic in a park is a good way to have a rest from the working week. We tend to plan everything in advance. My mother and I cook something for this occasion. Very often we eat grilled meat in a park. Picnic for my family is not only an opportunity to eat something delicious outdoors. At the picnic, we communicate a lot and play some outdoor games. It is funny!
I believe, it is very important to have a break from the city life. Unfortunately, my family doesn`t have a country house. Nevertheless, we really enjoy spending time in quiet and peaceful places. Going for a picnic in a park is an ideal way for us to relax!

Там все оборудовано для этого. Кроме того, там есть несколько навесов. Если идет дождь, то можно спрятаться там. Более того, в этой зоне в парке есть специальное оборудование для барбекю и гриля. Я считаю, что очень важно отдыхать от городской жизни. К сожалению, моя семья не имеет загородного дома. Тем не менее, нам очень нравится проводить время в тихом и спокойном месте. Отправиться на пикник в парк — это идеальный способ расслабиться для нас!

What do people like doing as a hobby? The most popular hobbies are collecting, sewing, embroidering and so on. One of the most popular hobbies is photography. It is a job for some people. Actually, photography is in high-demand. People want to save their important memories in photos. For example, it is difficult to imagine a wedding day without a photographer. The first photo was taken in the early 19th century. Nowadays photography is an essential part of our life.
Indeed, nowadays scientists and engineers invent many different technologies to improve the quality of photography. If you use the newest models of cameras, it can be possible to make very realistic photos which are barely distinguishable from reality. Beside realistic photos, one more advantage of the modern cameras is a possibility to use them everywhere. For example, if you want to take a photo underwater, you can use a waterproof camera.
Nowadays it is popular to take a selfie. Selfie is not only a self-portrait photo nowadays. It is a lifestyle. Many people all over the world take selfies every day and share them on different social networks. People buy special things for taking a selfie, for example, selfie sticks.
Photography is a kind of art nowadays. Many photographers hold exhibitions where they show their best photos of landscapes, people and things. I think photography is a good and interesting activity. It broadens the mind and makes the life interesting and eventful.
