Modern gadgets and their role in our life

Every house today is full of smart appliances, such washing machine, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, microwave, stereo system, etc. These objects have drastically changed people’s lives. They made it easier to cope with household chores. It seems that new technologies govern the lives of all people on planet. It’s simply impossible to imagine modern life without labor-saving gadgets. A couple of decades ago people had no idea what smartphones or iPhones are, while today nearly everyone has one. It is undoubtedly the best communication and entertainment device. People can connect with each other everywhere they go through social network, text messaging, low-cost calls, chats rooms, etc. It is hard to stay even a day without such handy gadgets. Although, there are, of course, some disadvantages of rapid technological progress. Firstly, doctors state that all electronic gadgets are dangerous for health. For example, we spend hours I front of computer or laptop monitors, which results into eyesight deterioration, backaches and headaches. Mobile phones are also harmful to health due to their electromagnetic radiation. Secondly, all modern gadgets make us lazy and clumsy. Thus, we easily gain excessive weight. Thirdly, people have become too dependent on these gadgets. They get stressed or unconfident when they forget a mobile phone or tablet at home. In my opinion, gadgets produce addiction, which is bad for people’s mind. Nevertheless, it is hard to underestimate the role of new technologies in our life.

Money

Money is something without what we cannot imagine our life. It exists almost in all fields of the life. Money is something that is accepted as payment goods, services and so on. Different countries have different currencies, for example, rubles in Russia, yuan in China or dollars in the United States of America. Modern money is a special piece of paper or a coin. A government declares it as legal tender, so money derives its value.

In ancient times money could be made of shell, teeth or feathers, for example. However, such money could be easily faked. People tried using noble metals to avoid it. Besides, they used scales to weigh money to identify whether it is true or not. People invented different money systems.

Some people think that money do harm. They think that money makes people greedy, haughty and angry. Actually, I think that it depends on a particular person and his or her attitude to money. Some people keep an extravagant lifestyle. They waste money. Such people buy unnecessary things. Sometimes they do not know that they really waste money.

Many books and films are about people’s attitude to money. Authors write books about the rich and the poor. They write about what people prefer in particular situations: money or moral values.

Money is an essential part of the life but money should not be more important than moral values.

Деньги – это то, без чего мы не можем представить себе жизнь. Деньги присутствуют почти во всех сферах жизнедеятельности. Деньги – это то, что принимается в качестве платежа за товар, услуги и т.д. В разных странах разные валюты, например, рубли в России, юань в Китае или доллары в Соединенных Штатах Америки. Современные деньги представляют собой специальный лист бумаги или монету. Правительство объявляет конкретные деньги законным платежным средством, так деньги получают свою ценность.

Например, в древности деньги могли быть сделаны из раковины, зубов или перьев. Однако такие деньги можно было легко подделать. Люди пытались использовать благородные металлы, чтобы избежать этого. Кроме того, они использовали весы, чтобы взвесить деньги и определить, настоящие они или нет. Люди изобретали разные денежные системы.

Некоторые люди думают, что деньги – это зло. Они думают, что деньги делают людей жадными, надменными и злыми. На самом деле, я думаю, что это зависит от конкретного человека и его отношения к деньгам. Некоторые люди ведут расточительный образ жизни. Они тратят деньги впустую. Такие люди покупают ненужные вещи. Иногда они даже не догадываются, что действительно впустую тратят деньги.

Многие книги и фильмы касаются темы отношения людей к деньгам. Авторы пишут книги о богатых и бедных. Они пишут о том, что люди предпочитают в определенных ситуациях: деньги или моральные ценности.

Деньги являются неотъемлемой частью жизни, но деньги не должны быть важнее, чем моральные ценности.

Moscow

Moscow is the capital of Russia, its political, economic, commercial and cultural centre. It was founded 8 centurys ago by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1147. Gradually the city became more and more powerfull. In the 13th century Moscow was the centre of the struggle of Russian lands for the liberation from the tartar yoke. In the 16th century under Ivan the Terrible Moscow became the capital of the new united state. Though Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1712; Moscow remained the heart of Russia. That's why it became the main target of Napoleon's attack. After the October revolution Moscow became the capital again. Now moscow is one of the largest cities in Europe. Its total area is about nine hundred square kilometres. The population of the city is over 8 million.Moscow is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The heart of Moscow is Red Square. The Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral (Vasily Blazheny) are masterpieces of encient Russian architecture. On the territory of the Kremlin you can see old cathedrals, the Palace of Congresses, the Tzar-Cannon and the Tzar-Bell, the biggest cannon and bell in the world. St. Basil's Cathedral was built in the mid-16th century in memory of the victory over Kazan.One of the well-known Kremlin museums is the Armouty Chamber. The famous golden cap of Monomach, the first Russian imperial crown of Catherin the second and many other historical items are exhibited there.

There are more than 80 museums in Moscow. The Historical Museum, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the Tretyakov State Picture Gallery are world famous and the largest.Moscow is famous for its theatres. The best-known of them are Bolshoi, Maly and Art theatres.

Moscow is the seat of the Russian Parliament (the Duma) and the centre of political life of the country.

Постепенно город стал все более мощным. В 13-ом столетии Москва была центр борьбы Российских стран для освобождения от хомута камня. Хотя Питер Большой перемещенный капитал(столица) к Санкт-Петербургу в 1712; Москва осталась сердцем России. Именно поэтому это стало главной целью нападения Наполеона. Теперь Москва - один из самых больших городов в Европе. Его полная область - приблизительно девятьсот квадратных километров. Население города - более чем 8 миллионов.

Mother’s Day

Mother is the most important person in everyone’s life. Her care and love protect a child from the birth and stay with him or her forever. Mothers are happy for our achievements more than anyone else and, at the same time, always are ready to support us in difficult situations or to give a useful advice. While we are children, love and trust to the mother are boundless, but later she becomes also the closest friend. Therefore, almost all the cultures have a special holiday in honor of mothers – Mother’s Day.

This holiday is celebrated on different dates because its time and sense depend on traditions and history of a nation. The most countries celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May (the USA, Italy, Japan, Denmark, etc.), but there are other variants: the last Sunday of November in Russia, the fourth Sunday of Lent in the United Kingdom. Although everywhere people congratulate their mothers personally or by telephone, give flowers and greeting cards to them, the ways of celebrating are various. For example, the Catholic cultures strongly associate this holiday with the worship of the Virgin Mary, so in Italy and Spain people go to church with their mothers. The British bake the traditional fruit cake called Simnel. The German present to their mothers a dozen of red roses with a small souvenir.

Mother’s Day exists in my country as well. It is a warm and soulful holiday for all ages, not only for children: mothers enjoy presents and flowers, visit congratulatory events, and, of course, spend time with loved ones.

Мама – самый важный человек в жизни каждого. Её забота и любовь защищают ребёнка с рождения и остаются с ним или с ней навсегда. Матери рады нашим достижениям больше, чем кто-либо другой, и в то же время всегда готовы поддержать нас в сложных ситуациях или дать полезный совет. Пока мы дети, любовь и доверие к матери безграничны, но позже она становится ещё и ближайшим другом. Поэтому почти во всех культурах есть особый праздник в честь мам – День матери.

Этот праздник отмечается в разные дни, потому что его время и смысл зависят от традиций и истории того или иного народа. В большинстве стран День матери отмечают во второе воскресенье мая (в США, Италии, Японии, Дании и т.д.), но есть другие варианты: последнее воскресенье ноября в России, четвёртое воскресенье Великого поста в Великобритании. Хотя повсюду люди поздравляют своих матерей лично или по телефону, дарят им цветы и открытки, способы праздновать различны. Например, в католических культурах этот праздник прочно ассоциируется с почитанием Девы Марии, так что в Италии и Испании люди идут со своими матерями в церковь. Британцы пекут традиционный фруктовый торт, который называется Симнел. Немцы дарят матерям дюжину красных роз с небольшим сувениром.

День матери существует и в моей стране. Это тёплый и душевный праздник для всех возрастов, не только для детей: мамы наслаждаются подарками и цветами, посещают поздравительные мероприятия и, конечно, проводят время с близкими.

Music in my life

Everybody likes music: some people enjoy classical music, others are fond of pop music. For some of them music is a voice for the thoughts and feelings. For others it’s a harmless way to relax (1) and have fun. So many people, so many opinions. You can sometimes understand better the inner world (2) of the person when you speak on music because it is a short way to see if your friend shares your musical values (3) or not.

Some young people prefer classical music to rock and pop music because they consider that rock and pop lost their importance nowadays. Everything is controlled by machines and technology. Ten or twenty years ago there were real artists writing real songs and now all you can get is synthesisers (4) and dance music.

But among young people there are many fans of pop music who consider that pop music is still better today than ever before. There are stars all over the world with lots of different styles and images. And it’s great! Pop is like big fun-fair (5). If you can’t have a good time it’s nobody’s fault (6) but yours. The names of the biggest stars in music of the 20th century are: Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Madonna and many others.

Best of all I like Michael Jackson who is called a living legend (7). I have many cassettes (8) with his songs and often listen to them because to my mind his music is first of all extraordinary and creative (9).

I prefer music among all arts because it speaks a universal language and makes the world brighter.

 

Все любят музыку: некоторые предпочитает классическую, другие восхищаются популярной. Для некоторых из них музыка- это выражение мыслей и чувств. Для других- лучший способ отдохнуть и развлекаться. Сколько людей - столько и мнений. Иногда можно лучше понять внутренний мир человека, поговорив о музыке, потому что это простой способ увидеть, или твои друзья разделяют твои музыкальные взгляды, или нет.

Некоторые молодые люди отдают предпочтение классической музыке, а не року или поп-музыке, потому что считают, что рок и поп-музыка потеряли свою значимость на сегодняшний день. Потому что все зависит только от машин и технологий. Десять или двадцать лет назад были настоящие художники, которые писали настоящие песни, а сейчас все, что можно услышать, это только синтезаторы и танцевальная музыка.

Но среди молодых людей есть немало поклонников популярной музыки, которые считают, что она сейчас значительно лучше, чем когда-либо ранее. Во всем мире звезды музыки отличаются стилем и имиджем. И это прекрасно! Популярная музыка - словно ярмарка. И если ты не получаешь от этого удовольствие, то это только твоя вина, никого другого. Вот имена величайших звезд музыки XX века: Элвис Пресли, "Битлз", Майкл Джексон, Мадонна и многие другие.

Больше всего мне нравится Майкл Джексон, которого называют живой легендой. Я имею немало кассет с записями его песен и часто их слушаю, поскольку, по моему мнению, его музыка - чрезвычайная и творческая.

Я предпочитаю музыке среди всех искусств по-тому, что музыка говорит на одном языке и делает этот мир ярче.

My Childhood

Usually, childhood is associated with joy and serenity, the absence of serious problems. While we are children, we can play and watch cartoons without adults’ worries about money, political situation, or personal conflicts. Society considers a child as a human patronized by the family and not responsible for his actions. This evaluation changes during school years: as a child grows up, his life becomes more conscious and more difficult. He learns to perform his educational and household duties, to build relationships with teachers and friends. In teenage years, a person is already able to take decisions independently.

However, I suppose that childhood is a very important period. It consists of many initial experiences forming a human’s personality, individual aptitudes and habits: the first choice of a role in a play, the first favorite book, the first quarrel or even fight with coevals… Childhood impressions create our moral values, notions of “good” and “bad”, images of a perfect work and a perfect family. According to sociologists and psychologists, childhood determines all the further life.

As regarding my childhood, it was a happy and interesting time full of everyday discoveries. I liked walking in places that seemed mysterious: in old parks or green yards of my town. My rich imagination always made me invent fairy tales; I tried to write them down and to draw some characters. I adored my toys – for example, the large gray cat with the purple bow. Of course, the main things were love and caring of my family: their attitude, after all, has given me everything that I have now.

Пока мы дети, мы можем играть и смотреть мультфильмы без тревог взрослых о деньгах, политической ситуации или личных конфликтах. Общество рассматривает ребёнка как человека, опекаемого семьёй и не ответственного за свои действия. Эта оценка меняется в школьные годы: по мере того как ребёнок растёт, его жизнь становится более сознательной и более сложной. Он учится выполнять учебные и домашние обязанности, строить отношения с учителями и друзьями. В подростковом возрасте человек уже способен самостоятельно принимать решения.

Однако я считаю, что детство – очень важный период. Оно состоит из множества первых опытов, формирующих личность человека, индивидуальные склонности и привычки: первого выбора роли в игре, первой любимой книги, первой ссоры или даже драки со сверстниками… Впечатления детства создают наши нравственные ценности, представления о «хорошем» и «плохом», образы идеальной работы и идеальной семьи. Согласно социологам и психологам, детство определяет всю дальнейшую жизнь.

Что касается моего детства, оно было счастливым и интересным временем, полным ежедневных открытий. Мне нравилось гулять в местах, которые казались таинственными: в старых парках и зелёных дворах моего городка. Богатое воображение всегда заставляло меня сочинять сказки; я пыталась записывать их и рисовать некоторых персонажей. Я обожала свои игрушки – например, большую серую кошку с фиолетовым бантом. Самым главным, конечно, были любовь и забота моей семьи: их отношение, в конечном счёте, дало мне всё, что есть у меня сейчас.

My family

The family is an important part of everyone`s life. My family members are the people who always support me and are ready to help in every situation. There are five members in my family: my mother, father, elder sister, younger brother and me.

My father`s name is Igor. He is thirty-nine years old and works as an accountant in a big international company. He spends a lot of time at work and is really exhausted when he comes back home in the evening. My mother`s name is Mary. She is thirty-six. My mother used to work in a small pharmaceutical company. However, nowadays she is a housewife. She keeps the house clean, cooks for the whole family and takes care of my little brother Peter. He is only two years old. Peter is a very cute and clever child. I enjoy playing with him. It is really funny. My elder sister, Ann, is sixteen years old. Most part of my day I spend with my sister because we study together. Every morning I go to school with her. Sometimes Ann helps me with my homework. When we have spare time we normally go for a walk together.

In my family, there are some traditions. Every Saturday we spend the whole day together. We go for a walk in a park or to the cinema. From time to time we visit some exhibitions. On Sundays, we tend to visit my grandparents and have dinner together. I really appreciate the fact that my family is so friendly.

Семья — это важная часть жизни каждого. Члены моей семьи – это люди, которые всегда поддерживают меня и готовы помочь в любой ситуации. В моей семье пять человек: мама, отец, старшая сестра, младший брат и я.

Моего отца зовут Игорь. Ему тридцать девять лет, и он работает бухгалтером в крупной международной компании. Он проводит много времени на работе и вечерами возвращается домой уставшим. Мою маму зовут Мария. Ей тридцать шесть. Моя мать работала в небольшой фармацевтической компании. Однако в настоящее время она является домохозяйкой. Она держит дом в чистоте, готовит для всей семьи и заботиться о моем младшем брате Пете. Ему всего два годика. Петя очень милый и умный ребенок. Мне нравится играть с ним. Это очень забавно. Моей старшей сестре, Ане, шестнадцать лет. Большую часть дня я провожу со своей сестрой, потому что мы вместе учимся. Каждое утро я хожу в школу с ней. Иногда Аня помогает мне с домашним заданием. Когда у нас есть свободное время, мы обычно гуляем вместе.

В моей семье есть несколько традиций. Каждую субботу мы проводим весь день вместе. Мы гуляем в парке или идем в кино. Время от времени мы посещаем выставки. По воскресеньям мы, как правило, навещаем бабушку с дедушкой и ужинаем вместе. Я очень ценю тот факт, что моя семья очень дружная.

My Favourite Cartoon

Nowadays cartoons are an integral part of modern film industry. Hundreds of film studios all over the world work to create new cartoons not only for children but for teenagers and adults too. In addition, the most popular of them are watched by millions of people.

My favorite cartoon is Scooby-doo. This cartoon was created by studio «Hanna-Barbara» in 1969. Moreover, the popularity of it makes creators produce new series. The main characters of the cartoon are Scooby-doo, Shaggy Rogers, Fred Jones, Velma Dinkley, and Daphne Blake. Besides, there are several characters who were demonstrated in several parts in this animation: Scooby-Dum and Scrappy-doo. Their tasks are to dissolve mysterious events, and so they are often observers of ghostly phenomena and other supernatural phenomena. At the end of each episode, it comes to light that there is a rational explanation for these phenomena. Сriminals get the punishment they deserve and the team is getting ready to solve a new case.

But why this film is so adorable for me? There are several reasons. This cartoon was one of the most promoted in my childhood, tasks of the main characters were really exciting for me. Besides, this cartoon was full of funny moments, especially with Shaggy and Scooby. Every weekday evening I sat in front of the TV and waited for the beginning of this broadcast.

I would advise this cartoon to every child because it may develop logical thinking in their minds.

Сегодня мультфильмы стали неотъемлемой частью современной киноиндустрии. Сотни киностудий по всему миру работу по созданию новых мультфильмов не только для детей, но и для подростков и взрослых тоже. Кроме того, самые популярные из них смотрят миллионы людей.

Мой любимый мультфильм это Скуби-Ду. Этот мультфильм был создан на студии «Ханна-Барбара» в 1969 году. Более того, популярность этого мультика заставляет создателей выпускать новые серии. Главные герои мультфильма — Скуби-Ду, Шегги Роджерс, Фред Джонс, Велма Динкли и Дафна Блейк «. Кроме того, есть несколько персонажей, которые были продемонстрированы в нескольких частях в этой анимации: Скуби-дум и Скрэппи-ДУ. Их задача – расследование загадочных событий, и поэтому они часто наблюдают призрачные явления и другие сверхъестественные явления. В конце каждого эпизода становится очевидно, что есть рациональное объяснение этих явлений. Преступники получают наказание, которое они заслуживают, а команда готовиться раскрыть новое дело.

Но почему этот фильм так нравится мне? Есть несколько причин. Этот мультфильм был одним из самых раскрученных в моем детстве, задания главных героев были для меня очень увлекательными. Кроме того, этот мультфильм полон смешных моментов, особенно с Шегги и Скуби. Каждый будний вечер я сидел перед телевизором и ждал начала этого мультфильма.

Я бы посоветовал этот мультфильм всем детям, потому что это может развить логическое мышление.

My Favourite Day of the Week

My favorite day of the week is Saturday. First of all, it is a weekend and I have an opportunity to sleep longer. After the working week, I feel really exhausted and Saturday is a day when I can relax. The further reason to love Saturday is the fact that my mother cooks pancakes for the breakfast. This is my favorite dish. Unfortunately, during the working week, I do not have enough time to eat properly because I have to hurry up so as not to be late for school.

After the breakfast, my parents and I normally go somewhere. Very often we go for a walk in the park not far from our home. In summer I can ride a bike there or do roller skating. In winter we normally go skiing there. From time to time I go to the cinema or visit different museums either with my family or with my friends. I tend to do my homework and on Sundays, that`s why on Saturday I have enough spare time not only to spend it with my family but also to meet with my friends. Moreover, on Saturdays, I tend to visit my grandparents and have a dinner with them. My granny cooks very deliciously. After dinner, I play chess with my grandfather. Sometimes we play some desktop games together.

Saturday is the best day of the week for me. I do not have to go to school and do my homework, I can do everything I like and that`s great!

Мой любимый день недели — суббота. Во-первых, это выходной день, и у меня есть возможность поспать подольше. После рабочей недели, я чувствую себя очень уставшим, а суббота — это день, когда я могу расслабиться. Еще одна причина, почему я люблю субботу -это то, что мама готовит блинчики на завтрак. Это мое любимое блюдо. К сожалению, в течение рабочей недели, у меня не хватает времени, чтобы нормально кушать, потому что я должна поторопиться, чтобы не опоздать в школу.

После завтрака, мы с родителями обычно идем куда-нибудь. Очень часто мы идем на прогулку в парк, расположенный недалеко от нашего дома. Летом я могу кататься там на велосипеде или роликовых коньках. Зимой мы обычно катаемся там на лыжах. Время от времени я хожу в кино или посещая различные музеи с семьей или с моими друзьями. Я обычно делаю свое домашнее задание по воскресеньям, поэтому в субботу у меня достаточно свободного времени не только, чтобы провести его с семьей, но и для того чтобы встретиться с друзьями. Кроме того, по субботам, я стараюсь навестить бабушку с дедушкой и поужинать с ними. Моя бабушка готовит очень вкусно. После ужина, я играю в шахматы с дедушкой. Иногда мы играем вместе в настольные игры.

Суббота — лучший день недели для меня. Мне не надо ходить в школу и делать домашнее задание, я могу заниматься тем, что мне нравится, и это здорово!

My Favourite Season — Summer

There are four seasons in a year and all of them are good in their own way. However, the season I like most of all is summer.

First of all, it is a holiday time and I have enough spare time for my favorite activities and hobbies. I can go for a walk with my friends, ride a bike, play football and do some other fun activities.

Moreover, the weather in summer is fantastic. It is sunny and warm. So I can spend the whole day outside.

July I normally spend with my grandparents in the countryside. They have a small country house not far from Moscow. The air is really fresh there. My granny has a small garden and I enjoy an opportunity to eat fresh vegetables, fruit, and berries every day. Sometimes I go fishing with my grandfather. But mostly I spend time with my friends. When the days are especially hot we tend to swim in the lake. Besides, we can play different games together, so I never get bored there.

In August we normally go on holiday to the seaside with my parents. I really enjoy swimming, sunbathing as well as playing beach volleyball and badminton. Spending several weeks at the seaside is an ideal way to relax for me.

I believe that all children love summer because they do not have to wake up early, go to school and do homework. It is the time when pupils can have a rest from a tough academic year.

Есть четыре сезона в году, и все они хороши по-своему. Однако я люблю больше всего лето.

Прежде всего, это каникулярное время и у меня достаточно свободного времени для моих любимых занятий и увлечений. Я могу пойти на прогулку с моими друзьями, кататься на велосипеде, играть в футбол и заниматься другими интересными вещами.

Кроме того, погода летом фантастическая. Солнечно и тепло. Так, я могу проводить весь день на улице.

Июль я обычно провожу с бабушкой и дедушкой на даче. У них есть небольшой домик в Подмосковье. Воздух там очень свежий. У моей бабушки есть небольшой огород, и я наслаждаюсь возможностью питаться свежими овощами, фруктами и ягодами каждый день. Иногда я хожу на рыбалку с дедушкой. Но в основном я провожу время с моими друзьями. В особенно жаркие дни мы обычно купаемся в озере. Также мы можем играть в различные игры вместе, поэтому мне никогда не бывает скучно там.

В августе мы с родителями обычно едем отдыхать на море. Мне очень нравится плавать, загорать, а также играть в пляжный волейбол и бадминтон. Провести несколько недель на море – это отличный способ отдохнуть для меня.

Я считаю, что всем детям нравится лето, так как им не нужно рано вставать, идти в школу и делать домашнее задание. Это время, когда школьники могут отдохнуть от тяжелого учебного года.

My favourite sport.

I really love going outside and playing outdoor games. Of the many sports that I have played in high school, I like playing basketball the most, because it is challenging and it requires\takes a lot of teamwork to win a game.

It is not easy to be able to dribble a basketball. It takes many days of practice. I have a good aim and I like to be the person to throw the ball into the hoop. I find that playing a basketball game is very challenging because it is not easy to dribble the ball pass my opponents and getting the ball through the hoop. In my last basketball game, it took more then thirty minutes to score a point. In addition, it takes a lot of teamwork.

Teamwork is very important in a basketball game because it is very difficult to win alone. When playing basketball, I have to pay a lot of attention to what my teammates are doing because they could suddenly pass the ball to me. Two months ago when I was playing basketball with a couple of friends, one of my teammate threw the ball to me and I did not notice it, and tripped over the ball. Thus good communication skills are mandatory.

Basketball is my favorite sport. I would like to play it more often; however most of my friends are always busy. In addition the weather is also a problem because I hate playing in the rain, and I worry about getting a suntan.

My favorite TV program.

The most popular entertainment in our home life is television. We have a choice between five channels ORT, RTR and 3 commercial channels. There is also a cable TV station in our town. Television plays an important role in our life. It informs people about current events both national and international, the latest achievements in science and culture, and offers some programs, which are both interesting and stimulating. Every day we can see different tips of programs on TV. News is broadcast at regular intervals. They also present operas, ballets, music concerts and various shows. Broadcast for schools are produced on five days of the week, during school hours. In the late afternoon and early evening TV channels showed special programs for children. In the evenings and at weekends there are broadcasts of sports events. A large time of TV evening’s time is occupied by films and serials, but as for me I like quizzes. A quizzes–program is a question and an answer competition which offers money and other prizes and to the winners. Such programs as “Wonders field”, “Brain ring”, What, Where, When”, “Guess the melody” are me favorite ones, because they are both informative and interesting. But bast of all I like the programs of “Travels club”, because it gives me a chance to travel of other the world with out living home. Far away countries and their customs and traditional are come into my living room.

My Favourite Writer

 I'm fond of reading. My favourite writer is William Somerset Maugham and I would like to tell about his biography. William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 and spent his childhood in Paris in the family of a British diplomat. Having lost his parents at an early age, he went to live in England with his uncle, who was a clergyman. He was educated at King's school in Canterbury studied painting in Paris, went to Heidelbury University in Germany and spent six years at St.Thomas Hospital in England studying to be a doctor. He was an unsatisfactory medical student for his heart wasn't in medicine. He wanted, he had always wanted to be a writer and in the evening after his tea, he wrote and read. In 1897 he wrote a novel called "Liza of Lambeth", sent it to a publisher and it was accepted. It was something of a success. So William Somerset Maugham decided to abandon his medical profession and he did it with relif. The next ten years were very hard on him. He learned the terrible difficulties of making a living by writing. But he survived. He became a famous writer. He never regretted the five years he had spent at the hospital. They taught him pretty well all he knew about human nature.

 The novel "The moon and sixpence" (1919) is based on the life of the artist Paul Gauguin was an immediate success. Maugham went to Tahiti and lived in Gauguin's hut while writing the book. His fame as a short story writer began with "The Trembling of a leaf". Since then he wrote many collections of books, essays and criticism. Many of his books and stories came out of his extensive travels in the East. His autobiographical books "The summing up" and "A writer's Notebook" are remarkable for both style and sincerity. His books have been reprinted many times. In 1927 William Somerset Maugham settled in the South of France and lived there until his death in 1965.

MY HOBBY

What is a hobby? It is what you can and like to do, when you have free time. We choose a hobby according to our character and taste. When we have a hobby our life becomes more interesting.

Very often our hobby helps us to choose our future profession because we learn a lot of new things.

Many people are interested in music. They collect records. Others like to read and collect books. People living in cities and towns like to be closer to nature and they spend their free time in the country.

Some of us go on hikes, some like to work in their gardens, take photographs or knit.

For example, gardening and growing roses is the most common hobby among Englishmen.

Both grown-ups and children are fond of playing different computer games. It has become one of the numerous hobbies.

I have got a hobby too.

My name is Nastya. Sometimes I have got some free time. As my hobby is cooking I like to make cakes and pies. My cakes are very tasty, but I like pies best of all. I'll tell you how I make pies with cabbage.

First of all I take a head of cabbage, cut and put it into a frying-pan. Then I take carrot and peel it. By the way I have a very comfortable grater at home. I like to use it when I make my pies. I usually grate carrot, onion using my favourite grater. I put grated carrot into the frying-pan, then I salt cabbage and carrot to my taste, mix them and add some water. Then I stew these vegetables in the frying-pan. I usually buy some paste for my pies.

I cut up paste, roll it and make small pies. Then I put pies with stewed cabbage into the oven. It takes twenty minutes

to bake them. My parents and friends like to eat my pies. I advise you to make such pies and I hope that you'll like them too.

My Hobby is Drawing

I believe that it is very important for everyone to have a hobby. It helps us to feel special and relax at spare time. Moreover, hobbies help people develop their skills and as the result become professionals in some spheres.

My hobby is drawing. I started drawing at the age of three. Of course, at that time it did not look beautiful, but my mother decided that I had a potential. As the result, at the age of four, I began my studies at the drawing studio. I found it really amazing. I was extremely impressed with the skills of my teacher of drawing. I worked really hard in order to improve my skills. Now at the age of thirteen, I am really good at drawing. I can draw portraits as well as landscapes. Most of all I like to paint with watercolors. Practically every weekend I go to the countryside. My family has a small country house not far from Moscow. The view there is really picturesque. Sometimes I draw the portraits of my family members or friends. I am very pleased that many of them put my works in a frame. I can spend hours drawing and never feel tired after it. Many of my works win in various creative competitions.

Drawing brings me a lot of satisfaction. For me, it is the best way to relax and impress my emotions. I hope that one day I will become an absolute professional in this sphere and will work as a designer.

В результате, в возрасте четырех лет, я начал свое обучение в изостудии. Мне это очень нравилось. Я был очень впечатлен навыками моего учителя рисования. Я очень усердно работал, чтобы улучшить свои навыки. Сейчас, в возрасте тринадцати лет, я очень хорошо рисую. Я могу рисовать портреты, а также пейзажи. Больше всего мне нравится рисовать акварелью. Практически каждые выходные я езжу в деревню. У моей семьи есть небольшой загородный дом недалеко от Москвы. Там очень живописно. Иногда я рисую портреты членов моей семьи или друзей. Я очень рад, что многие из них выставляют мои работы в рамку. Я могу часами рисовать и никогда не чувствовать себя усталым после этого. Многие мои работы побеждают в различных творческих конкурсах.

Рисование приносит мне большое удовлетворение. Для меня это лучший способ расслабиться и выразить свои эмоции. Я надеюсь, что однажды я стану абсолютным профессионалом в этой сфере и буду работать дизайнером.

My meals

Normally I eat three times a day and have some snack if I feel hungry. Unfortunately, during the working week, I do not have enough time to have a breakfast properly. I have to hurry up, in order not to be late for school. So a just drink tea with a couple of sandwiches. Taking into account that I spend the considerable part of my day at school, I have a lunch there. I either buy something in a school canteen or take a lunch box from home.

When I come back from school, I have a dinner. My mother is a wonderful cook. She really enjoys cooking and all her dinners are very delicious and various. First of all, I eat some soup. A tomato soup is my favorite. For the main dish, I usually have some meat or chicken with potatoes or vegetables. Sometimes I eat fish or some seafood. Honestly, I do not like at all, but my mother believes that it is of overwhelming importance to eat it from time to time, so as to be healthy. Personally, I like spaghetti with cheese most of all.

At the weekends we sometimes have a dinner at some café. I really love Italian cuisine, especially pizza and pasta that`s why I always ask my parents to go to the Italian restaurant not far from our home. Sometimes my mother bakes something on Sundays. I always try to help her. I find it really interesting and hope that one day I will cook as well as my mother does.

Честно говоря, мне это не очень нравится, но мама считает, что очень важно хотя бы иногда это есть, чтобы быть здоровыми. Лично я больше всего люблю спагетти с сыром.

В выходные дни мы иногда ужинаем в кафе. Я очень люблю итальянскую кухню, особенно пиццу и пасту, поэтому я всегда прошу родителей пойти в итальянский ресторан недалеко от нашего дома. Иногда мама печет что-то по воскресеньям. Я всегда стараюсь помочь ей. Мне это очень интересно, и я надеюсь, что однажды я буду готовить также хорошо, как моя мама.

My parents

Parents are the people who surround us from our birth. These are the closest people for everyone. I love my parents very much. They always support me and are ready to help in every situation. I really appreciate it.

My parents got acquainted at the University. From the first glance, they fall in love with each other. After graduation, they got married.

My father`s name is Victor. He is thirty-seven years old and works as a manager in a big international company. His work is really tough and very often he has to work overtime. My mother`s name is Kate. She is thirty-four. My mother is a teacher of math. She works part time that`s why she has enough time to keep the house clean, cook for the whole family as well as take care of my younger sister Ann. She is 3 years old. Very often my mother helps me with math. It is rather difficult for me to understand all the peculiarities of this subject.

I really enjoy spending time with my parents. Every Saturday we spend the whole day together. We go for a walk in a park or to the cinema. From time to time we visit some exhibitions. On Sundays, we tend to visit my grandparents and have dinner together.

I am proud of my parents. I hope that one day I will become as successful as they are. I appreciate the fact that my family is so friendly.

Ей тридцать четыре. Моя мама — учитель математики. Она работает на полставки, поэтому у нее достаточно времени, чтобы содержать дом в чистоте, готовить для всей семьи, а также заботиться о моей младшей сестре Ане. Ей 3 года. Очень часто мама помогает мне с математикой. Мне довольно сложно понять все тонкости в данном предмете.

Мне нравится проводить время с моими родителями. Каждую субботу мы проводим весь день вместе. Мы гуляем в парке или идем в кино. Время от времени мы посещаем выставки. По воскресеньям мы, как правило, навещаем бабушку с дедушкой и ужинаем вместе.

Я горжусь своими родителями. Я надеюсь, что однажды я стану таким же успешным, как они. Я ценю, что моя семья очень дружная.

My pet

I believe that it is absolutely vital to have a pet. I love dogs very much. I am sure that dogs are the cleverest and the most faithful animals. Unfortunately, for a long time, my parents were against buying me a dog. They were afraid that a puppy may damage the furniture. Besides, they understood that it was a great responsibility.

For my tenth birthday, my parents gave me the best present in the world. It was a puppy. At first, I could not believe that it was happening with me. My dream came true that day. It was a Yorkshire terrier. These dogs are small and do not require a lot of space. Moreover, this breed of dogs gets along well with children. I decided to name my dog Betty. It was really funny and cute. It was black and fluffy. It looked really scared and always tried to hide somewhere. However, in a few hours, it got used to the new surroundings and I could play with it. We bought in a pet shop a bowl, feed, some toys and some other things for my new friend.

Betty is 3 years old now. It is considered as a member of our family. I cannot imagine my life without my dog. I go for a walk with it regularly. It really likes to play with a ball. When I feel sad it always sits nearby and licks me. It is really cute. When my parents and I come back home, it is extremely happy to see us. It jumps and wags its tail. We love our pet very much!

Это был Йоркширский терьер. Эти собаки маленькие и не требуют много места. Кроме того, эта порода собак хорошо ладит с детьми. Я решил назвать свою собаку Бетти. Она была очень смешная и милая. Она была черная и пушистая. Бетти выглядела очень напуганной и постоянно пыталась где-нибудь спрятаться. Однако через несколько часов она привыкла к новой обстановке, и я могла играть с ней. Мы купили в зоомагазине миски, корма, игрушки и некоторые другие вещи для моего нового друга.

Бетти сейчас 3 года. Она считается членом нашей семьи. Я не представляю свою жизнь без моей собаки. Я регулярно хожу гулять с ней. Она очень любит играть с мячом. MY SCHOOL

At the age of 6 or 7 all boys and girls go to school. I go to school too. The number of my school is 338. Our school is large and light. It is neither old nor new. There is a schoolyard around it. It is a pity, but there are no flowers near the school. You can see a sportsground behind the school. Sometimes we have physical training lessons there.

Our school has got three floors. There is a workshop on the ground floor. It is big. There are all kinds of tools and machines there. The boys of our school have a wood-work room too. They learn to make things of wood in this room. There is a room for manual work for girls. It is not on the ground floor, it is on the second floor.

There are some computer classes, and pupils like such school subjects as Computing.

If you enter the school and go to the left you see a dining-room. Here pupils and teachers have their breakfast and dinner.

The dining-room is a clean one. There are many nice pictures on the walls.

There is a gymnasium near the dining-room. All pupils like to go there, because they like physical training lessons.

Our school has got a library. It is on the ground floor too. There are a lot of interesting new and old books in it. But our library has no reading-room.

Our school has got many classrooms. We have got two English classrooms. History, Geography and Physics classrooms and others. They are big and light and each of them has got two large windows with green curtains, flowers on the window-sills, a bookcase near the door, the blackboard on the wall.

The teacher's table with many books on it is situated not far from the blackboard.

There are twenty desks and some comfortable chairs in the classrooms.

There is a TV set in each classroom. Sometimes it is used during the lessons.

There is a school hall on the second floor where meetings and conferences take place.

We organize concerts, parties when we celebrate our holidays. Pupils of our school sing songs and dance modern and folk dances and perform some plays there. The last bell is organized at our school in a proper way. It is a very remarkable day in the life of all the pupils. The pupils of the first form and the pupils of the eleventh one are preparing for this day with great pleasure.

The teachers' room is on the second floor. There are tables and chairs for teachers, a TV set and a telephone there. It is a comfortable and cosy room and the teachers like to spend their free time in it. I like my school. I go there and get knowledge.

My Village

My grandparents live in a country house in a small village not far from Moscow. Very often my parents and I visit them on the weekends. Moreover, I spend most part of my summer holidays there. I love my village. The air there is really fresh and there are lots of things to do.

In my village, there is a lake. I swim there with my friends when the weather is good.

My granny has a small garden and I always enjoy an opportunity to eat fresh vegetables, fruit, and berries, when I am in the country. Sometimes my grandfather and I go to the forest and pick up mushrooms. I find this activity really interesting. From time to time we also go fishing. Honestly, I am not really good at it, but my grandfather is a professional. In the Lake there a lot of different species of fish. After the fishing, my granny normally cooks a fish soup. It is one of my favorite dishes and my granny cooks very delicious.

In summer there are a lot of people in my village. Some of them are living there

on aregular basis, like mygrandparents. Everybody knows each other there and I really appreciate it that there I can go for a walk with my friends at any time and my relatives would not worry about me. My village is a place, where I have a lot of friends and enjoy spending time!

Мои бабушка и дедушка живут в загородном доме в маленькой деревне недалеко от Москвы. Очень часто мы с родителями навещаем их по выходным. Кроме того, я провожу там большую часть моих летних каникул. Я люблю свою деревню. Воздух там действительно свежий и всегда есть чем заняться.

В моей деревне есть озеро. Я плаваю там с моими друзьями, когда погода хорошая.

У моей бабушки есть небольшой сад, и я наслаждаюсь возможностью кушать свежие овощи, фрукты и ягоды, когда я нахожусь в деревне. Иногда мы с дедом ходим в лес собирать грибы. Мне это интересно. Время от времени мы также ходим на рыбалку. Честно говоря, я не очень хорош в этом, но мой дед-профессионал. В озере есть очень много разных видов рыб. После рыбалки, моя бабушка обычно готовит рыбный суп. Это одно из моих любимых блюд и моя бабушка готовит очень вкусно.

Летом в деревне много людей. Некоторые из них живут там на постоянной основе, как мои бабушка и дедушка. Там все друг друга знают, и мне нравится, что я могу пойти на прогулку с моими друзьями в любое время, и мои родственники не будут беспокоиться обо мне. Моя деревня — это место, где у меня много друзей и где приятно проводить время!

The NATO

North Atlantic Treaty Organization is the organization developed to implement the North Atlantic Treaty, signed on April 4, 1949 and entered into force on August 24, 1949. It was created to establish a military counterweight to the Soviet military presence in post-World War 2 Eastern Europe.

NATO’s governing body – the North Atlantic Council which was established soon after the Treaty came into effect. The council is composed of ministerial representatives of the member states and meets of least twice a year. Its chairman, chosen by rotation among the member states.

NATO is the organization which serves the Alliance. It is an inter-government organization in which member countries retain their full sovereignty and independence. The Organization provides the forum in which they consult together on any issues they may choose to raise and take decisions on political and military matters affecting their security.

NATO’s essential purpose is thus to safeguard the freedom and security of all its members by political and military means in accordance with the principles of the UN.

New York

New York City, sometimes called “The Big Apple”, is the most famous megacity of the USA. It is an extremely important trading, financial, and cultural center of the world, “the heart” of the modern market economy and postindustrial society. The city often hosts international negotiations and summits, the OON headquarters is situated in it, so its political significance is also undeniable. There are the largest transnational business corporations and stock markets in the world. New York has flourished and grown as a city of immigrants, and now various cultures (English, Irish, German, Chinese, African, Arabic ones, etc.), races, and religions coexist there.

Originally, New York was a city of Dutch colonists who had settled on the territory of local Indian tribes. The city had been founded in the 17th century under the name New Amsterdam, but later, was captured by the British and renamed. After the American Revolutionary War of the 18th century and the Civil War of the 19th, New York became a part of the sovereign and the democratic United States. It grew and developed rapidly as a center of trade and the gates to “the free America” for immigrants who arrived to start a new life.

Landmarks and active life of New York make it an unforgettable place, attractive for tourists. Of course, its main symbols are the Statue of Liberty and impressive panoramas with skyscrapers, including the splendid Empire State Building. The Metropolitan Museum contains a huge collection of art, sculpture, historical clothes, and photo. Picturesque Central Park is very popular, as well as musical concerts of Carnegie Hall, numerous malls, and restaurants.

NEW YEAR'S DAY

There are many holidays in our country. They are: New Year's Day, Christmas, Women's Day, Victory Day, May Day and others.

I like New Year's Day, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year.

Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year's Day.

The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don't go to school and my parents don't go to work.

We usually have got a very interesting New Year's party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December.

Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year's tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year's tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.

My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake.

All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us at 11 o'clock in the evening.

At 12 o'clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, "Best wishes for the New Year!"

I hope that next year will be better than the last one.

The New Year's Day is always connected with our new hopes and dreams.

It is a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year's Eve.

I usually get many nice useful things from my parents and relatives.

My parents put their presents under the New Year's tree.

We don't go to bed till morning, we watch TV, dance, eat tasty things and make jokes.

I enjoy this holiday very much.

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand is a very interesting country. It has got total area of 269,000 square kilometers. It is situated to south-east of Australia in the Pacific Ocean. It consists of two main islands (North Island and South Island) and some smaller ones. Nearly 3.5 million people live in the country. The capital of New Zealand is Wellington. It is a financial centre too. The city was founded in 1840 and has been the capital since 1865. The official language Is English.

The climate of New Zealand is moist. New Zealand is rich in minerals. There are some main industries in the country, for example, iron and steel industry. The country has gas and petroleum. There are many mountains in New Zealand. The highest is Mount Cook (3,764 metres or 12,349 feet).

There are many rivers and lakes in the country. The chief rivers are the Waikato and the Wairu. You have heard about the native animals in the country. One of them is the kiwi. This interesting bird lives in the wet parts of the thick bushes. In the day-time the bird does not go out. It comes out only at night to find food. Kiwis cannot fly. Many years ago kiwis were hunted for food. Now the government does not permit the hunting the kiwis. The kiwi is now the symbol of New Zealand people. Small children are often called kiwis.

New Zealand is independent state, but formerly it is a part of the British

Empire. The head of the state is the Queen. New Zealand is self-governing state. The Parliament consists of one House only, the House of Representatives. The Prime Minister is the head of the government.

New Zealand has got heavy industry. There are many plants in the country. Paper and rubber industries are developed too. New Zealand exports wool, meat, butter.

There are some big cities such as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dune-din, Nelson. Auckland and Wellington are the main ports of the country.

There are some educational and cultural institutions in Wellington. They are the University of New Zealand, Victoria University College and others. Victoria University was established in 1897.

New Zealand is a very interesting and beautiful country.
