Intonation of special questions

Special questions in English are usually pronounced gradually downward by a scale with a fall. Quiet, restrained questions are pronounced by a low fall. Special questions with a high fall sound lively, friendly, interested.

'What's the \ time? – Сколько времени?

Intonation of separative questions

The intonation of separative questions is a statement of two syntagmas. The first is usually pronounced a downward scale with a fall. The second syntagmas as general mini-questions are usually pronounced low rise - so the speaker wants to show his interest in the subject of the conversation and get new information from the answer. With the confidence of the speaker in a positive response, waiting for them to confirm only, he pronounces the second syntagma with a fall. Such divisive questions become original statements.

You are a 'first-year \ student, / are not you? – Вы с первого курса?

Intonation of answers

The answers to general and dividing questions sound categorical, confident, usually falling. The high fall in the answers sounds friendly, low - restrained.

\ No, she \ is not. She's a \ lab assistant. – Нет, она помощница лаборанта.

Answers to alternative questions usually speak low.

She is' nine \ teen – Ей 19

Confident answers to special questions require a fall, in uncertain answers usually use a low lift.

'That's' Steve's \ mother – Это мама Стива
