My flat and my room

My name is Mary Brown. I would like to tell you about my flat.  I live in a new 16-storeyed block of flats. It’s situated in a very picturesque place. There is a big supermarket on the ground floor and it’s very convenient to do everyday shopping.

My flat is on the fifth floor. It’s very comfortable and very well-planned. There are all modern conveniences, such as central heating, electricity, gas, cold and hot running water, telephone and the Internet. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a hall in my flat. There is also a balcony and I can enjoy a lovely view of the river.

The largest room in my flat is the living room and I use it as a dining room also. In the middle of the room there is a big table and six chairs round it. Opposite the window there is a wall unit with lots of books, a TV-set, and a video cassette recorder. There are two comfortable armchairs and a small coffee table in the right-hand corner. There is also a sofa and an electric fire in my living room. I like the living room best of all, so in the evenings my family and I gather there to have tea, watch TV, talk and rest.

My room is the smallest room in the flat, but it is very cosy and light. There is a bed, a wardrobe, a desk, an armchair and several bookshelves here. There is a thick carpet on the floor. The walls in my room are light brown and there are some big posters on them.

My kitchen is large and light. It is very well-equipped. I have got a refrigerator, a freezer, a microwave oven, a coffee-maker and a toaster.

Housework

Mr. and Mrs. Wally both hated housework. They were a very untidy couple who never put things away. When they went to bed, for example, they always left their clothes in a mess on the floor. Their kitchen was a mess too. Even though they had a dishwasher, they always left the dirty dishes in the kitchen sink and only did the washing-up when there wasn’t a clean plate to be found in the house. It was the same with their clothes. They never put them into the washing machine until there was nothing else left to wear.  The living room always looked as though a bomb had just gone off. There were things everywhere. There was thick dust on every piece of furniture.

One day, when Mr. Wally couldn’t find one of his shoes, and Mrs. Wally couldn’t see her face in the bathroom mirror, they decided it was time to get the house cleaned. So they found Mary, a foreign student at a local language school, who needed some extra money.

Marie came to the house and worked and worked all day long. She washed and dried all the clothes. Then she ironed the clothes, folded them neatly and put them away. Marie swept all the dust off the floor with a large broom. She took a wet cloth and wiped the dust of every surface in the house. Then she polished the furniture. After that, she got out the vacuum cleaner and cleaned all the carpets.

When Mr. and Mr. Wally came home, their house looked clean and spotless.
