Pattern 3 (Participle I as an Adverbial Modifier)



 

of Attendant Circumstances Dad stood smiling encouragingly. (=Dad was standing and smiling) – Папа стоял, ободряюще улыбаясь.
of Time 1. Putting on a serious face, the actor began to tell the story. (= When he put…) – Сделав серьезное лицо, актер начал свой рассказ. 2. Having completed the project we had a holiday. (After we had completed …) – Закончив проект, мы ушли в отпуск. 3. I picked up a little Spanish while travelling in Mexico. (= while I was traveling...) – Я немного выучил испанский, путешествуя по Мексике. 4. When renting a car, you have to produce your driving license. (= when you rent …) – Когда вы берете машину на прокат, вам необходимо предъявить водительское удостоверение.
of Reason 1. Being imported, oil is very expensive in that country. (= is expensive because it is imported) – Нефть в этой стране очень дорогая, так как она туда импортируется. 2. Having worked for the company for 20 years, Greg knew all the ins and outs of business transactions. (= because / as he had worked…) – Проработав в компании 20 лет, Грег знал все тонкости ведения деловых операций.
of Condition Judging from recent events, the Government seems to be losing the support of the country’s population. (= if one judges) – Судя по последним событиям, правительство, похоже, теряет поддержку населения страны.
of Concession Although admitting his guilt, the suspect refused to give the details of the theft. (= Although he admitted his guilt…) – Хотя подозреваемый признал свою вину, он отказался рассказать о подробностях кражи.
of Manner He stood there as if/though waiting for someone. (= as if / though he was waiting…) – Он стоял там, как будто ожидая кого-то.
of Result The bomb fell on the medieval castle totally destroying it. (= The bomb fell on the medieval castle and as a result it was destroyed). – Бомба попала в средневековый замок, полностью разрушив его. (в результате чего он был полностью разрушен.)

 

Paraphrase the sentences using Participle I.

Pattern 4 (Participle II as an Adverbial Modifier)

of Attendant Circumstances Founded in 1694, the Bank of England was privately owned until 1946 when it came under government control.
of Time The picture was stolen while exhibited in a private gallery. (= while it was exhibited) – Картину украли, в то время когда ее выставляли в частной галерее.
of Reason Encouraged and supported by her family, Linda managed to become a certified nurse. (= as she was supported and encouraged ) – Имея поддержку и помощь семьи, Линда смогла стать дипломированной медсестрой.(так как она имела поддержку / пользуясь поддержкой и помощью семьи)
of Condition If elected President he will pursue his predecessor’s policy. (= If he is elected …) – Если его выберут президентом, он будет проводить политику своего предшественника.
of Concession Although widely advertised, the film wasn’t a box-office success. (= Although it was widely advertised…) – Несмотря на широкую рекламу, фильм не имел кассового успеха.
of Manner He kept silent as if shocked by the news. (as if he was shocked) – Он молчал, словно был шокирован новостью

 

Paraphrase the sentences using Participle II as an adverbial modifier.
