Read the following sentences and translate them into Russian. Comment on the forms of the Participle.



 

1. That day we stayed at home watching “Pride and Prejudice” on television. 2. In a few more minutes the first guests will be arriving wearing smiles and carrying presents. 3. Having said what I was obliged to say I want to tell you now how sorry I am that it has come to this. 4. Having discussed some minor problems we proceeded to the main business of the meeting. 5. Having settled this point to your satisfaction you will look round for something to take your mind off business. 6. Holding the child close to her she seemed to be showing him something. 7. Having written the last word she looked up interrogatively. 8. The kitten carried by one of the kids yelped and tried to run away. 9. Deeply hurt, the mother cleared the table without saying a word. 10. The guests looked at the smiling bride. 11. Smiling she showed us her son’s letter. 12. The shopping mall being built here will be the largest in this city. 13. Being asked for her opinion the new intern (стажер) blushed. 14. Having voiced his objection the lawyer sat down. 15. Having been told to wait in the lobby, she waited without objecting. 16. The robbers are reported to have been wearing knitted caps pulled low over their eyes. 17. In Victorian England a good child was not supposed to speak unless spoken to. 18. The stranger stood on the corner of the street, as if waiting for somebody. 19. It’s common knowledge that when seen from space, the earth is blue. 20. Who is the man being interviewed by the reporter?

 

Patterns with the Participle

Pattern 1 (Participle I as an attribute)

1. Who’s the girl dancing with your brother? (= …the girl who is dancing …) –Кто эта девушка, танцующая с твоим братом? (= …девушка, которая танцует … ) 2. Everybody looked at the stranger sitting in the corner. (= …the stranger who was sitting …) – Все посмотрели на незнакомца,    сидевшего в углу. ( … на незнакомца, который сидел в углу.) 3. Everybody listened to the story being told by the elderly lady. (= …the story that was being told…) – Все слушали историю, которую рассказывала пожилая дама.  
NOTE ! Participle I не употребляется для ·  выражения однократного, законченного действия: The girl who came in looked a bit embarrassed. – Вошедшая девушка казалась немного смущенной. ( Девушка, которая вошла, …) · выражения действия, предшествующего действию главного предложения: The man who lost his documents has turned for help to a private detective. – Человек, потерявший документы, обратился за помощью к частному детективу. ( Человек, который потерял документы…) Русское причастие совершенного вида (сделавший) переводится на английский язык при помощи личной формы глагола (который сделал). Сравните: · прыгающая собака – a jumping dog · прыгнувшая собака – the dog that jumped

 

14. Make phrases using Participle I.

15. Paraphrase using Participle I where possible.

1. Amnesty International are concerned about people who are being held in prison without a trial. 2. The old truck which was trailing black smoke drove off towards town. 3. There was a sudden noise that woke everybody up. 4. The damaged tanker which was carrying oil was in danger of breaking up in rough seas. 5. The person who scored the most points in the game won first prize. 6. My brother supported the team who were losing the game. 7. The young lady who had been driving was sitting over her cup of coffee on the now empty terrace. 8. I don’t know the details of the case which is being discussed at the moment.

 

16. Translate into English.

1. Мать пыталась успокоить плачущего ребенка. 2. Пассажир Н., потерявший билет, может получить его в справочном бюро аэропорта. 3. Капитан команды, проигравшей матч, отказался давать интервью. 4. Тонущее судно разыскивалось командой спасателей. 5. Говорящий это человек не читал книги в оригинале. 6. Журналист, рассказавший мне эту историю, ссылался на надежный источник. 7. Никто не обратил внимания на женщину, стоявшую у книжных полок. 8. Кошка, лежащая на подоконнике, тихо мурлычет. 9. Собака, лежавшая на коврике, бросилась в сад, услышав голос хозяйки.
