Значення спорту в нашому житті ( The importance of sport in our life )

Millions of people all over the world are fond of sports and games. All sorts of physical exercises are very helpful to make our bodies strong as well as to keep us well mentally. So if we want to keep ourselves fit, we have to go in for sports or games.

For thousands of years a man was hunting to get his food. It means that he had to run, to jump, to climb and do a lot of other things. So everyone is ready to admit that our bodies weren’t built for sitting at a desk all day. Nevertheless sometimes it’s so difficult to overcome an innate laziness. We are able to realise that lack of the physical exercises can lead to depression and even to serious illness, sometimes to early death. But all the same we often think, “It’s not going to happen to me”.

More and more people all over the world consider it necessary to follow the active way of living. As they say: “A sound mind in a sound body”. Many people do sports on their personal initiative. They do morning exercises, jog in the morning and train themselves in clubs and different sections. To keep fit some people attend special classes or take part in aerobics or yoga. Others play football, badminton, tennis.

All necessary facilities are provided for them: stadiums, sport grounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, skiing stations, and football grounds.

Sport helps people to stay in good shape, to support health, and prevents from illness. Sport makes them more organized and better disciplined in their daily activities.

Соціальна значущість професії вчителя (Social importance of the teaching profession)

Primary school teaching is the single most important profession in the world. Teachers pass on knowledge and values to children, prepare them for further education and for working life and are main contributors to good education. This most important profession however does not get the recognition it deserves. In the developed world, young people don’t want to become a primary school teacher anymore. In most developing countries the profession does not attract qualified and ambitious people because it is poorly remunerated. Gone are the days that a primary school teacher was a highly respected person. To attain the goal of universal and good primary school education, teaching has to become an attractive profession again.

Teachers are one of the main pillars of a sound and progressive society. They bear the weight and responsibility of teaching, and, apart from parents, are the main source of knowledge and values for children.

For a child between 6 and 12, there are basically three options: get no primary education, get low quality primary education or get good quality primary education. In spite of our world being immensely rich, the majority of children have to settle for option 1 or 2. At this very moment, over a hundred million children get no primary education at all. And over 500 million of them get it but the quality is low: they have little or no books, their class-room is poorly equipped or simply doesn’t exist, or they have a teacher whose level of knowledge hardly surpasses that of a 6th grader or who is not motivated because she earns less than her neighbor who cleans the house of the local landlord.

The universally subscribed goal that “by 2015 all children, particularly girls, children in difficult circumstances and those belonging to ethnic minorities, have access to complete free and compulsory primary education of good quality” can only be achieved if children can have access to motivated and knowledgeable teachers. They are the resource by excellence. The books are important, the pencil and the blackboard are important and so are the chairs to sit on, but if there is no motivated teacher in front of the chairs, if there is no teacher to write on the blackboard and to teach reading, math and how to pick up knowledge and values, the goal will never be achieved.

Стратегії опанування англійською мовою ( English learning strategies )

Nowadays millions of people all over the world have made heads and tails of learning English because of increasing political, economic and cultural ties among different countries. The English language plays an important role in the world communication, international business and social and cultural affairs.

Learning a foreign language isn’t an easy thing. It’s a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and efforts. Learning English is like learning to swim or to play ball. We learn to swim by swimming, to play ball by playing ball, and to speak English by speaking English. A good ball-player spends hours, days, months, and even years practising. The more he practises, the better he plays. And so it is when we are talking. Acquiring the ability to use a language automatically is a process of habit formation that requires much practice.

There are many ways we can practise and improve our English ourselves. First of all, we have to learn new foreign words almost every day because words are the materials out of which we build our thoughts.

We should try an English learning website or just read about our favourite bands, film stars or sports people. 80% of the Internet is in English and there’s a lot of interesting information there.

We can get an English-speaking penfriend. This is a great way to practise English. We should buy English language magazines and newspapers. We may read a story in our own language first, and then read it in English to see how well we can understand. We should also buy a graded reader that is the right level for us. The stories are interesting and the language isn’t too difficult, so we’ll start to enjoy reading English for fun.

Videos and DVD are a fun way to practise our listening. With a DVD we can watch a scene in our own language first and then watch it in English afterwards. We should also listen to the songs of our favourite English-speaking singers or bands and write down everything we understand. Then we can check the lyrics.

Besides all that a good language learner has to be confident in his ability to learn, enthusiastic, aware of why he wants to learn, unafraid of making mistakes, and unafraid of what he doesn’t know, positive in his attitude to English language and culture. And we should remember that nobody can learn to swim for us and nobody can learn English for us. We have to learn for ourselves, and we will learn it if we really want to and are willing to practise. Language isn’t to be taught, language is to be learnt.
