OF THE COURSE

 

Module 1. Ways of enriching the word stock of the English language (2 hours).

Widening of the word stock of English by various ways: change of meanings, acquiring new meanings (neosemy), enlarging the lexicon with the help of word-buildings (neologisms proper) borrowing. The connection of neology with pragmatics – statement of the fact of inner regularities which determine the choice and adequate use of words in a concrete act of communication.

 

Module 2. The causes of creating new words. Problems of prognosis in word-building of Modern English (2 hours).

Extralinguistic causes of a new word appearance in the language. The role of new words in creating ideological stereotypes. The conditions and purposes of the nomination process. Spheres of maximum realization of new words. Problems of prognosing in word-building of Modern English.

Module 3. Typology of new words in English (2 hours).

Three main types of new words. The foundation of their classification. Neologisms, nonce-words, occasionalisms.

 

Module 4. The category of neologisms (2 hours).

Extralinguistic factors of neologism appearance. Neologisms of two groups. The historical character of the category of neologisms. The relative and indefinite character of the notion “neologisms”.

Module 5. Nonce-words in English (2 hours).

Characteristics and specific peculiarities of nonce-words. The character of the nonce-word. Correlation of nonce-word combinations and sentences, their interchange ability.

 

Module 6. Occasionalisms (2 hours).

Occasionalisms as speech realization of word-building potential of the language. Close connection of occasional words with the context. Expressiveness and creativity of the category of occasionalisms.

 

Module 7. The base of creation occasional words (2 hours).

Classification of occasional words according to their origin. Occasional speech models. Word-building derivation on the basics of the concrete pattern.

Module 8. Word-building models with substandard morphemes (2 hours).

Redecomposition of the morphological and semantic organization of borrowed elements. Typical substandard affixes.

 

Module 9. Active word-building models (2 hours).

The notion of activity and productivity of word-building models. The role of word-building affixation and other ways of word-building affixation and other ways of word-building in enriching the vocabulary Modern English.
