ANNOTATION

 

The program is intended for students taking courses in the speciality “Linguistics” (the profile of preparation “Theory and Practice of Intercultural Communication in PAC”). It is an alternative discipline of the professional cycle.

Teaching the Course is aimed at showing some tendencies of nomination in Modern English in the process of appearing new words.

The Course tries to assist students to decode pragmatic information of the new word in the text, it is based on knowledge of active word-building models allowing students to analyse the intention of writers and enrich their own vocabularies.

The Course establishes links with the main notions and categories of English Lexicology and the basic regularities of developing its lexicon. The given Course is closely connected with other courses of the state, education standard “Basics of Linguistics”, “Lexicology”, “Sociolinguistics”, “Pragmatic”, “The Practical course of English as the first foreign language”.

The aim of the Course consists in providing students with the knowledge of fundamentals of developing the Modern English vocabulary, highlighting the recent tendencies in this sphere caused by the “lexicon explosion”, permanent enhancing of the vocabulary with lexemes formed by means of word-building models, setting in English and derivation patterns.

The Course is aimed at forming and developing certain professional competences; as a result of which a student acquires the following skills and abilities:

- is able to use the system of linguistic knowledge including the knowledge of basic phonetic, lexical, grammatical, word-building phenomena and regularities of functioning of the foreign language student studies, its functional varieties (PC-1);

- is able to use basic discourse ways of realization of communicative purposes of the utterance, takes into consideration the peculiarities of the current communicative context (time, place, purpose and conditions of interaction) (PC-3);

- is able to use the main ways of expressing semantic, communicative and structural continuity among parts of the utterance – compositional elements of the texts (introduction, the main part, conclusion, superphase unities, sentences) (PC-5);

- processes necessary interactional and context knowledge allowing a student to overcome the influence of stereotypes and be adopted to the conditions in the process of contacts with representatives of various cultures (PC-18);

- is able to work with main informational and expert systems, systems of representing knowledge, syntactic and morphological analysis, automatic synthesis and decoding speech, procession of lexicographic information and automatized systems of identification and verification of the personality (PC-21);

- is able to use methods of formal and cognitive modeling a natural language and methods of creating metalanguages (PC-22);

- is able to see interdisciplinary links of the disciplines under study and understands their meaning for future professional activities (PC-38).

 

The tasks of the Course are:

1) formation of understanding that creation of new words is realized as a reflection of new requirements of the society in the language;

2) revealing specific peculiarities of various types of new words;

3) the description of the stock of word-building models reflecting the definite types of active processes of nomination;

4) definition of connection between processes of creating new words and their communicative-pragmatic trends;

5) revealing inner regularities determining the choice and adequate use of words in a concrete communicative act.
