English Law
English law is the legal system of England and Wales, and is the basis of legal systems used in most Commonwealth countries and the United States except Louisiana. It was exported to Commonwealth countries during the British Empire, and many aspects of that system have persisted after the British withdrew or granted independence to former colonies and dominions. It forms the basis of the jurisprudence of most of those countries.
The essence of English common law is that it is made by judges sitting in courts, applying their common sense and knowledge of legal precedent to the facts before them. A decision of the highest appeal court in England and Wales, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, is binding on every other court in the hierarchy, and they must follow its directions. For example, there is no statute making murder illegal, it is illegal by virtue of the constitutional authority of the courts and their previous decisions.
England and Wales are constituent countries of the United Kingdom, which is a member of the European Union. Hence, EU law is a part of English law. The European Union consists mainly of countries which use civil law and so the civil law system is also present in England.

Roman Law
The first Roman legal text is the Law of the Twelve Tables, dating from the 5-th century BC. After eight years of political struggle, the plebeian social class convinced the patricians to send a delegation to Athens, to copy the Laws of Solon. In 451 BC, ten Roman citizens were chosen to record the laws. In 450 BC, they produced the laws on ten tablets, but these laws were regarded unsatisfactory by the plebeians. The new Law of the Twelve Tables was approved by the people's assembly.
Modern scientists tend to question the accuracy of Roman historians. The question of the Greek influence found in the early Roman Law is still much discussed. Many scholars consider it unlikely that the patricians sent an official delegation to Greece, as the Roman historians believed. The original text of the XII Tablets has not been preserved. The tablets were probably destroyed when Rome was conquered and burned by the Celts in 387 BC.

The fragments which did survive show that it was not a law code in the modern sense. It did not provide a complete and coherent system of all applicable rules or give legal solutions for all possible cases. Although the articles refer to all areas of law, the largest part is dedicated to private law and civil procedure.
