TRADING

Read the text giving English equivalents to the Russian words and translate it. Put ten questions to the text.

A company is also called a firm or a (предприятие). While it is producing (товары) or trading, it is said to be in business. A firm which is just starting up is going into business, and a company which stops operating is going out of business. If a company gets bigger, it (расширяться). (Расширение) of a firm (означать) it can (производить) or (продавать) more of its (продукция).

A manufacturing company produces (товары). The goods it makes are its (продукция). When a manufacturer expands it usually (увеличивать) its (производство). If one year it (производить) 100 tonnes and next year it produces 110 tonnes, it has increased (производство) by 10 per cent.

A company which (продавать) goods (оптом) is called (оптовое предприятие). A company or a person buying goods in wholesale and selling them in small quantities is a (розничный торговец). Most local shops are retailers and (продавать) goods (в розницу). Two or more companies which sell or manufacture the same (продукция) are (конкуренты). They are in competition and they compete for (покупатели). In order to sell more goods than its (конкурент) a company must be (конкурентоспособный). It is important to keep ahead of the (конкуренты) by selling at (конкурентоспособные цены).

If one company (иметь преимущество) over its competitors (for example a cheaper or better product) it gives them an edge on the market.

An area where there is a (спрос) for certain goods is called a (рынок). A company which markets goods locally, caters for the (местный рынок). If goods sold in the same country where they are produced it means that they are sold on the (внутренний рынок). A company which (продавать) goods abroad is a (экспортер). An export company sells goods on the (внешний рынок). An (импортер) buys goods abroad and (ввозить) them into his own country. The goods are then called imports.

INTRODUCTION

The story is about Jayal Motors, a small family firm which produces and sells mopeds. It is situated in Zana, a provincial town in Zuritania. Zuritania is an English-speaking developing country and its capital city is Dabu. The founder and Managing Director of the company is Tom Jayal. Jayal Motors’ main rivals on the home market are Barratt & Sons. In the course of the story, Jayal Motors consider exporting to an industrial country called Industria. The capital of Industria is Centreville and its currency is Industria pounds. The currency used in Zuritania is the utile.
