Задание 1. Заполните таблицу

Задание 2. Напишите не менее трёх формул оснований, не менее четырёх формул кислот, не менее пяти формул солей, в состав которых входили бы элементы третьего периода, напишите названия веществ.

Задание 3. Напишите формулы высших оксидов и их гидроксидов для элементов с порядковыми номерами 4, 33, 37, 52, 75,82.

Задание 4. Назовите элементы по следующим данным:

а) элемент четвёртого периода, высший оксид – R₂O₇,газообразное соединение HR;

б) элемент пятого периода, высший оксид – RO₂, газообразное соединение с водородом не образует;

в) элемент четвёртого периода, высший оксид - RO, соединение с водородом HR₂ – не газообразный.

Since ancient times Nature has served Man, being the source of his life. For thousands of years people lived in harmony with environment and it seemed to 34 them that natural riches were unlimited. But with the development of civilization man's interference in nature began to increase. Large cities with thousands of smoky industrial enterprises appear all over the world today. The by-products of their activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we grow grain and vegetables on. Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vast forests are cut and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result, some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of rivers and lakes dry up. The pollution of air and the world's ocean, destruction of the ozone layer is the result of man's careless interaction with nature, a sign of the ecological crisis. Environmental protection is of a universal concern. That is why serious measures to create a system of ecological security should be taken. Some progress has been already made in this direction. As many as 159 countries - members of the UNO - have set up environmental protection agencies. Numerous conferences have been held by these agencies to discuss problems facing ecologically poor regions. An international environmental research centre has been set up on Lake Baikal. The international organization Greenpeace is also doing much to preserve the environment. But these are only the initial steps and they must be carried onward to protect nature, to save life on the planet not only for the sake of the present but also for the future generations.

One of the founders of the USA, Benjamin Franklin, is also a well-known politician, author, scientist and inventor. He is famous for his experiments in physics. His most important inventions include the lightning rod, the bifocals, the Franklin stove and glass armonica. He investigated electricity and that resulted in him being the first, who labeled electrical fluids as negative and positive ones. He proved lightning to be electricity, suggested a principle of the refrigerator and conducted experiments connected with natural phenomena, was involved in population studies and in many other spheres. Benjamin Franklin is an example of the person, who was interested in everything surrounding him, so no wonder he did his best to answer the questions arising in his mind.

One more famous businessman and inventor is Thomas Edison. He is credited with the foundation of the first industrial research lab, where he applied the mass production principles. He is also an acknowledged inventor of the light bulb, which lasts for a long period of time, the motion picture camera and the phonograph. He is the owner of not fewer than 1000 patents, which became the base of many major industries in the world. His first crucial development was a system of electric-power generation and distribution. His name is still associated with the appearance of fluoroscopy, telegraph and sound recordings. His advanced works became a great investment in the development of our contemporary world and his talent and hard work are invaluable.

Nikolo Tesla is another American inventor and electrical engineer. He pursued an idea of creating a wireless communication with devices and he managed to do that as he has built the first motorboat with wireless control. He was also a developer of an induction motor, “Tesla Polyphase System” and possibly X–ray, though he had not announced it earlier than Wilhelm Rontgen.

There are many other famous inventors from the USA. Bette Nesmith Graham ,being an inventor of liquid paper, has made the life of numerous office workers easier. Mark Twain being a close friend of Tesla has also patented three inventions such as a history trivia game, a scrapbook, which is self-pasting, and an "Improvement in Adjustable and Detachable Straps for Garments". You must not forget about George Washington Carver, a famous botanist, who has managed to improve the crops of many farmers and create many useful products made from peanuts. Carrett Morgan experimented with hair care products and is the inventor of the safety hood and the traffic control device. John Philip Holland is a father of the first underwater vessel, which was a prototype of the modern submarine. George Westinghouse dealt with electricity distribution and the railway industry. Richard Feynman is a theoretical physicist formulating the basics of quantum mechanics, quantum electrodynamics and the principles of some liquids’ superfluidity. Many people have made a great contribution in today’s technology, but not everyone has been mentioned here, as the number of the US inventors is very big and each of them worked hard to reach his or her goals.

Many modern items we use in everyday life have come from the USA. Has anyone thought that television or CDs were created by the Americans? Aerosol cans, contact lenses, notepads or batteries are also the inventions of American people. All their developments helped to make new inventions and each of them should receive credit from the society for trying to improve our lives. Their thorough experiments, long hours of work and inborn talents were the reasons for American culture to thrive and nowadays keep up with the modern world sometimes even speeding it up. No wonder this country is still leading in inventions spending annually millions of dollars for their discoveries. Every scientist feels the support of the government and tries hard to find out something useful. So it goes without saying the USA is the country of inventors and their inventions.
