Your friend is writing an article about famous Britons. Who will you advise him to write about?

The first name that comes to my mind is William Shakespeare, the founder and the great classic of British literature, the author of world famous plays that have been staged in different theatres for more than four centuries. To the list of most prominent British writers I’d certainly add Charles Dickens, who wrote numerous western classics, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a Scottish writer known for his Sherlock Holmes stories, the classics of fantasy J. R. R. Tolkien and J. K. Rowling. Speaking about famous Britons we should certainly mention outstanding scientists Isaac Newton, who discovered that there is gravitation among all bodies; Charles Darwin, the author of the theory of evolution. The famous politicians Sir Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister during the World War II, the first British woman Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Queen Elisabeth II are worth mentioning too. Young people would be interested to get some information about the famous singers Paul McCartney and John Lennon, the leading singers of the Beatles, the people who made great contribution to the history of pop music.

Winston Churchill said: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It’s the courage to continue that counts.” What do you think about it?

I fully agree with Winston Churchill’s quote “Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It’s the courage to continue that counts.”Every morning when we wake up, we have goals that we wish to accomplish. Each day, each second we are given a chance to do well but there are no guarantees in life. Just because we have a successful day, does not mean that we can stop facing our fears or making progress. One good day does not guarantee a life of success, one bad day doesn’t guarantee a life of misery! We realize that failure is inevitable from time to time. But failure is neither final nor fatal – it can be overcome, it helps us to learn.

Success is not measured by how many times we manage not to fall, but rather by the amount of times that we can stand up. A strong individual has the courage to overcome different obstacles even when the fate acts against him. It’s important to be the type of person who continues to walk towards the light even in times of darkness.

1. Let's talk about travelling and tourism. What role does it play in your life?

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy picturesque places or just for a change of scene. It's always interesting to discover new things and different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different music.

Tourism has changed a lot over the past few decades. It is actually quite a new thing. It probably didn’t exist fifty years ago. The only people who travelled then were the rich, and they were called travelers. I guess tourism started in the late 60s and early 70s when airplane travel became cheap. The idea of foreign travel suddenly became very popular with millions. Everyone wanted their two weeks of sun in the summer. Tourism today is a multi-billion-dollar industry. There is hardly a corner of the Earth untouched by tourism. The number of tourists is also rocketing. Millions of people from Russia, India and China are now taking Travelling nowadays has become an important part of modern life. Millions of people all over the world travel about their own countries and to foreign countries as well. They are eager to see and explore new places and learn more about different ways of life. As for me I like travelling.

It’s always interesting to discover new things and other ways of life, to meet different people, taste different food, visit museums and picture galleries. I have visited Minsk, castles in Mir and Nesvizh several times. I always find something new being in these places.

2. Have you gone on any school trips? Why or why not?

My classmates and I went on different school trips during our school years. We visited Belarusian cities and towns, ancient castles, got acquainted with our history and culture. All my school trips were interesting and educational. Here, the first thing that needs to be said is that most people are more receptive to information visually than orally. If school trips  are well designed, they can make a learning process more exciting. School trips come in all forms and sizes: from art galleries, museums, walks to the local park to a camping trip out of the city. They help students develop spiritually. Learning outside the classroom can make pupils more responsible and sociable. To my mind, a single day in the field can be worth several weeks in a classroom

In conclusion, I want to say that school trips should have a place in modern education as they are an ideal way to meet people from all walks of life. School trips can teach children respect each other and develop team building skills in a society

3. What questions would you ask a tour guide on a tour of London?

Are we allowed to take pictures inside the museum?

Where is the best place to buy some souvenirs?

Where is the best place to have dinner around here?

What time does this restaurant stay open until?

What special services does your travel agency offer?

4. What can you advise a person who doesn’t know where to spend his/her holidays?

Of course, what is an ideal holiday for one person may be a very unpleasant one for another. I think I would advise my friend to go on a voyage on a modern passenger ship with a swimming pool because my friend would always find something for himself :plenty of games, swimming and dancing; on the other hand he could sit in a comfortable chair all day, looking at the sea and drinking lemonade or beer. In a ship one can do as one likes, when one likes. But what I like even more about a sea voyage is the chance to meet new interesting people from many countries. What other kind of holiday gives us such a chance? Free from all the duties of life at home, we can talk to our companions, play games, swim, drink and dance with our new friends. They can tell us about their own countries, their daily lives and amusements, their hopes and their fears. And in return you can tell them all about yourselves. But perhaps the greatest pleasure of a sea holiday is coming to new ports in strange lands, and going ashore for a few hours to see strange places, eat strange food and hear a strange language talked around us. Whenever I think of an ideal holiday, it is the picture of a mysterious foreign city that comes to my mind.

5. What foreign country or countries would you like to visit? Why?

As I haven’t travelled abroad much I’m sure all foreign countries will be of some interest for me. I think that there is only one reason to travel abroad -- that is to enjoy sights and experiences that you cannot get at home. I do not think that you can really experience some other culture by going there for two weeks, so I don't think that the cultural experience means much.

However, there are many things that you might not be able to experience in your own country. For example, I cannot go anywhere in my town and see a building that has been standing for 2000 years the way I could in Rome. I can't see the Great Wall of China in Belarus. So by going to other countries, I can see sights and get experiences that are not available in my home country.

If we are fond of travelling, we see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home, though we may read about them in books and newspapers and see pictures of them on TV. The best way to study geography is to travel and the best way to get to know and understand the people is to meet them in their own homes.

I would like to visit Great Britain and Germany.

I would like to learn more about the customs and traditions of these countries. It’s very difficult to visit countries when you don’t know the language of these countries. If I know the language of this country, it will be easy to travel there.

1. Let’s talk about different types of houses. Tell about the house/flat you live in.

There are different types of houses: detached, semi-detached, terraced houses and blocks of flats. A detached house is not joined to another house. The advantage of a detached house is the fact that the free space surrounding the building belong to the family. You can do whatever you would like to be done in your house. A semi-detached house is a pair of houses that shake a common wall. A flat is a part of a larger building which is called a block of flats. A flat can be a one-bedroom, two-bedroom or three-bedroom unit. Nowadays people prefer buying flats to renting them.

As for me, I live in a three room flat. It has all the modern conveniences: central heating, electricity, running hot and cold water and access to the Internet. There is a living room, my parent's room and my room. We also have a kitchen, a bathroom, a lavatory and a hall. Our flat is spacious, nicely furnished and has a good layout. My mum tends to spend most of her time in the kitchen which is equipped with all the necessary utensils. My father is literary glued to our HDTV. He is obsessed with the news.

I’m in really happy to have a room to myself. Although it's small, it is really cozy and catches a lot of sunshine. My windows overlook a nice garden. My room also reflects my personality. Almost every wall is filled with posters which represent my interests It gives me a chance to be on my own whenever I need it. That’s why it's so dear to my heart. Nobody will bother me if I ask for privacy.

To sum up, I'd like to say that everybody is free to choose where to live. But it's important to say that it's not the type of building but people who create a special atmosphere. A cottage or a farmhouse, a detached house or a flat can be a heaven if people treat it with care and love.

2. Do you find your town a comfortable place for living?

Yes, I do. I think that my town is a nice place for living. We have all the necessary public services here. My town is a convenient place to grow up your children as there are 6 secondary schools here, the art school and the sports schools are within a walking distance. In general it’s a quiet place to live so parents can leave their children at home. They shouldn’t get worried that anything happens to them as everybody knows their neighbors and keeps an eye on everything going around. The main problem in my town is to find a good job.

3. Ask me questions about different types of houses in Britain.

Which type of housing gives more privacy: detached, semi-detached, terraced or a flat?

Who is responsible for the upkeep of the house, the repairs and renovations?

Are houses made of wood or bricks? Are there tiles on the roof?

Do you live in a period or modern house?

Where do your family members like to spend their free time?

4. If your parents ask for your opinion where to move: to the city or to the country, what would you recommend them to do?

Like all young people I’d prefer them to move to the city. Life in the city is much easier than in the country – developed system, sewerage system, information, sports, shopping malls, etc. Modern men are too sophisticated for simple country pleasures. There is far more entertainment in the city than in the country. Cities offer high concentration of good things in life: big stores, restaurants, theatres, cinema, art galleries. Life is more convenient in a city: services are always better here. In the city people are more open-minded. It is possible to go out, make friends and never be cut off from them by weather conditions. In the city people have more chances to be employed, as the range of jobs is greater than in a village. Besides in the city people have more chances to succeed. Moreover, life is never dull in the city, people always have something to do here. The objections to city living are not convincing enough.

People easily adapt to various inconveniences of city life. For example, noise and traffic are hardly noticeable to city-dwellers.

In the city especially in our country people live in apartments with central heating, telephone, gas, electricity, radio, TV, the Internet.

Most people love cities. Many people love the busy city life. It is enough for them to visit a country at week-ends.

Of course my parents are free to decide by themselves because they realize that I’m a grown-up person now and will soon live independently.

5. What type of house would you prefer to live in? Why?

I’d prefer to live in a detached house. Nowadays people are getting tired of blocks of flats, they prefer to have their own porch.

It shouldn’t be very big, but every member of the family should have his or her own room. First of all an ideal house is large and has big windows and the front of the house gets the morning sun. It is made of red brick and has tiling on the roof. The rooms are spacious. The house is stylish; there are fewer rooms and more space. There are many large windows so that during the day the rooms are never dark. There is a fireplace in the lounge so the people living in the house can warm themselves by fire in the winter.

I’d like to have some nice flower beds and a small garden where I can relax after a working day.

1. Let’s talk about your family. What is family for you?

I believe that everything has its beginning in the family. Family is very important for every person, because it gives you a sense of stability and tradition, a feeling of having support and understanding. Frankly speaking, it doesn't matter how big your family is at the moment, either you have a big extended family with a lot of distant relatives or your family consists of only your Mum or Granny. We are lucky people to have them. Just imagine you haven't got them, what would your life turn into without their care and love?

Some of my classmates say friends are more important to them. I can't agree on it, friends will come and go but family is always there for me. They feed us when we are babies, teach us to walk when we are toddlers, discourage us from being impolite and teach us to think about other people when we are teenagers. They try to set us off on the right path and want to see us happy and well educated. They are on our side whatever happens in your life, we always feel their love. In a close knit family people respect, forgive and support each other. They find time for each other even when they are busy. I do think the family is very important. Noting else but family can be an emotional centre of people’s lives. Understanding between all members of the family and consideration for others are very important in family relationships. Tenderness, warm-heartedness and respect must always be present in the family to make it friendly.

I come from a typical Belarusian family. There are four of us; my Mum, Dad, my brother and me. My mum is a middle-aged woman, tall and slim with short blond hair and blue eyes. My Dad is in his mid 40s. He is tall and a little overweight but it doesn’t spoil him. He has a moustache and a beard. My mum is a teacher, my dad is a doctor. My brother goes to school. We get on very well together. We don‘t have any secrets from each other. We spend a lot of free time together. We go to the swimming pool twice a week and often visit our grandparents. We hardly ever quarrel or have important misunderstandings.

When I have my own family I want my family to have strong bonds and be the source of great emotional support for each other.

2. Do you have a family album? Why or why not?

Yes, I do. I think every family has some unforgettable moments that they would like to recall some time later. I have so many pictures in my house I literally don't know what to do with them all, and yet I keep snapping. I’m really happy when we have a little time to sit down together, and let our mind wander in the memories of our heart. Frankly speaking, in this busy life, it seems like a lot of work to get the family together and look at those old photos, but I don't get discouraged .One day I will be able to pass these pictures on to our children and then they will pass them down to theirs.

 3. The family of your American friend hands down their traditions from generation to generation? What question will you ask him?

Do you have family albums?

Where do you spend your holidays?

I wonder if you often visit your grandparents?

How often do you have family parties or gathering?

Do have any things that remind you about your dead relatives?

4. What can you advise people who want to have a good relationship with their parents and grandparents?

First of all honesty is the best policy. I think it’s all right if you discuss your problems with your parents. Share your secrets with them. They are your nearest and dearest and of course will do their best to help you out of your difficulty. You are a grown –up person now and your parents expect you to do some housework like cleaning your room or doing the shopping. You should realize that your parents need support and help too, so you must be an understanding daughter or son.

5. What is the right age for young people to get married in your opinion?

The main thing here is moral and financial readiness to get married and live a family life. It depends on a person when he is ready to take on certain responsibilities for the family. I personally think young people should get married when they get education and can support their family themselves. Nowadays we can see that most young people start thinking about getting married no sooner that they reach their late twenties. First of all they want to develop their personal qualities, become good professionals and make a career. I think it’s good news.
