Let’s speak about English speaking countries. What do you know about them?

There are over 300 million people in the world speaking English. This language is recognized as the state language in a lot of countries all over the world. These countries are the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand. It is also one of the official languages in Canada, the Irish Republic and the Republic of South Africa. Although these countries are situated in different parts of the world, they all share the same language. I’d like to tell you a little more about the main English-speaking countries.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain has always been a Great Power and contributed a lot to the development of new territories.

Another important English-speaking country is the USA. It is situated in the central part of the North American continent. The history of the USA started with 13 British colonies set along the Atlantic coast. On July, 4, 1776 they proclaimed their independence from Great Britain. Today the country consists of 50 states and the federal District of Columbia, where Washington, the capital of the USA, is located. It is one of the most developed countries in the world. The official language of the country is English. However, the USA is multinational country and people from certain communities can speak Chinese, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Korean and many other languages.

Australia and New Zealand are other English-speaking countries. They are former colonies of Great Britain. Australia is the only country in the world which occupies the whole continent Today the country is among the most developed countries in the world, with 80% of the population speaking Australian English.

New Zealand is a former British colony. The country gained its independence in the middle of the XX century. New Zealand is one of the most beautiful countries in the world with unique flora and fauna

The first European colonists came to Canada from France. But after that for many years Canada was under British rule until the country gained its independence in the XX century. There are two official languages in Canada. English is the first language for nearly 70% of Canadians. Canada is the second largest country in the world with rich oil, coal and natural gas fields.

2. Do you think Canada is the land of opportunity? Is it a good place for living?

I think it is. Canada is the world’s second largest country by total area after Russia. However the population density in Canada is very low. Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of the Nations, the G8, NATO and many other international organizations. Canada occupies an important position within the Commonwealth of the Nations. It is the world’s eleventh largest economy. Life expectancy is eleven years more than the average – around 82 years. Canada was formed originally by combining two different cultures. The racial tolerance of the country adds to its positive image a lot. It is a sport minded country and hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. I want to say that all these facts make Canada a good place for living.

3. What would you like to ask an American teenager about his/her country.

What does the flag of the United States of America symbolise?

What places would you advise me to visit in the United States?

What are the most popular sports in the country?

What educational centre should I enter in the United States?

I wonder what historic events influenced the course of the American history most.

Give me a piece of advice on what to choose from a tourist guide when planning a visit to the USA?

I think the United States has lots of interesting places to see, but New York City is a must. This city has many famous places. The first image of the USA that many immigrants who come from Europe to New York see is the Statue of Liberty. You can take a ferry ride to Liberty Island where you can visit the Immigration Museum. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed if you visit the liveliest Times Square. It is one of those places that make New York a city that never sleeps. You will have a chance to enjoy its cafes, restaurants and night clubs right in the middle of Manhattan. Many tourists visit the 9/11 Memorial to pay respect to the victims of the attack that happened on September 11, 2001.If you’re short of money but interested in art you can visit the museum of Modern Art and get a look at some of the most painting of all time. No visit to New York would be complete without a visit to the world’s largest store – Macy’s department store. If you’re hungry after sightseeing you should visit Starbucks where you will enjoy the best service, an inviting atmosphere and a cup of good coffee. I’m sure New York will give a lot of unforgettable memories.
