Mahatma Gardi once said: “The future depends on what you do today”. What do you think about it?

Each of us has a dream about our future. People should ask themselves questions if they are taking steps today to ensure happy future with the high level of quality, happiness, and satisfaction? It’s possible to predict what the future holds for us, just taking a look at our thinking, our choices, and our habits of today. The future is always affected by what we choose to do today. It’s important to be productive and be a good example to others. For the sake of future generations we should inspire people to do well in our society. This is a powerful message that makes us think “Life is so short, God gave us life in order to use it in a good ways”.

1. Let's talk about the Republic of Belarus. What do you know about our Motherland?

Belarus is my Homeland. It is a country with unique history and rich cultural heritage. Officially it is called the Republic of Belarus. a sovereign independent state with its own government, constitution, state emblem, flag and anthem. It came into existence at the end of 1991.

Belarus is situated in the centre of Europe and borders on Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia and Ukraine. The territory of our country is 207.6 thousand square kilometers. Its population is about 10 min people. The largest cities are Minsk, the capital, Gomel, Vitebsk, Mogilev, Grodno and Brest. The climate of Belarus is continental.

The landscape of Belarus is mostly flat. The southern part of our country is made up of marshes, swamps and forests. This region is called Polesye. Forests cover 40 percent of the country's surface. The most famous is the Belovezha Forest, the home of the European bison. This animal is one of the symbols of Belarus.

Belarus is a country of long rivers and beautiful lakes. The major rivers are the Neman, the Western Dvina and the Dnieper. The largest lake is Naroch which is located in a picturesque pine covered area.

My country is a developing industrial state. It‘s known for the production of heavy trucks, tractors, motor cycles, bicycles, TV sets, refrigerators, watches and many other goods, The country’s major crops are potatoes, flax, barley, rye and sugar beet.

Throughout the history Belarus has suffered a lot. It was involved in many wars and conflicts, because it's situated at the crossroads of Europe. The greatest and most notorious event is the Great Patriotic War. An eternal flame in front of the Victory monument keeps our memories alive. But it's necessary to admit that despite all the hardships our country managed to preserve its unity and strong spirit.

Speaking about Belarusian national character, many foreigners admit that our people are extremely sociable, hospitable, generous and welcoming with visitors. They are also described as resourceful and peaceful. When socializing, Belarusians are open, warm hearted, fun-loving, humorous and outgoing.

However, when they are moving around the city, shopping or travelling on public transport they are a bit reserved and tend to keep themselves to themselves. There is a high respect for education and culture, so the majority of people are highly professional, hard working and intelligent.

I want to mention that Belarus has recently gained popularity on the international arena. In 2010 Minsk hosted Junior Eurovision Song Contest which took place in Minsk Arena. And in 2014 our capital again drew crowds due to the IIHF World Ice Hockey Championship. The main venues were Minsk Arena and Chizhovka Arena. Besides, our country takes an active part in the work of UNO and is a member of the European Asian Economic Union.

In conclusion, I’d like to say that I'm proud of my country and its people. Each time I go abroad I tell foreigners about our great past and achievements. Belarus is the place my heart will always belong to.

Do know any symbols of your country?

There are official and non –official symbols of my country. The national flag of Belarus, the National Emblem and the National Anthem of the Republic of Belarus are official symbols of Belarus. The official symbols glorify the country’s past and speak about its present. The most widely known non-official symbols are the bison, the stork and the cornflower. They symbolize the beauty of our nature.

3. What questions about Belarus do you expect to hear from a British teenager?

Which of the historic places in Belarus are worth visiting?

What is the most beautiful city in Belarus?

What possibilities for entertainment does your country offer to young people?

I wonder what souvenirs I should buy in your country.

Where can I have a good rest in summer?

4. Belarus is a county of castles. Give your British friend advice what Belarusian castle he should visit.

Our county used to be a county of castles. Each rich man had a castle. But among all our castles I’d recommend to visit Mir Castle Complex first. Its great towers, tall walls and a three storeyed palace keep mysterious traces of the past and look majestic now after the reconstruction. According to a legend, Mir Castle was built by some mysterious giants in BC times. Historians say that the castle called later “the most fascinating medieval flower” was erected by JuriIljinitch. The experts cannot agree on the date when it happened. The language of medieval decorations is difficult to understand now. For example, no one can explain the appearance of a sheep head on the southern wall of the castle. Perhaps it was a wish of the landlord to have a magic talisman or just biblical image of a lamb. There were hard times during Mir Castle existence: a long-time Swedish siege, the North war of 1705, Alexander Souvorov’s troops stormed the castle. In 1812, there were severe battles between Russian and French troops. After the fire in 1914, the castle was not restored. During World War II there was a ghetto ['getou] in it, later there came people whom the war made homeless. The last inhabitant left Mir Castle in the early 1960s.At present, the reconstruction works have been completed. Mir Castle is one of the four World Heritage Sites in Belarus.

5. How would you organize a weekend for a group of teenagers from Europe to make it unforgettable?

The first idea that comes to my mind is to take them to a knights festival. Belarusian lands lie at the crossroads of Europe. As a result they always needed brave soldiers to protect them, otherwise known asknights. At the end of the 20th century knights began to come back, knights clubs, and later knights tournaments and festivals appeared. The main medieval festivals are held in Novogrudok, Mir, Zaslavl and Nesvizh. There it is possible to meet young men and girls in medieval costumes and watch knights tournaments. Tourists from different countries always enjoy such events, take pictures to relive memories on returning home. I’m sure that for teenagers from Europe a knights festival is a must to visit.
