LEISURE TIME

Let’s talk about leisure time. What do you like doing in your free time?

In big cities people spend their free time by going to the theatre, cinema, museums, art galleries, concert hall, fitness or disco clubs. When I have some free time I can choose any of them. But when the weather is fine, I like to go for a walk along the boulevards and streets of the city with my friends, enjoying its architecture.

As for me, I prefer to spend my free time doing three things: doing swimming, pursuing my hobby which is collecting rare books, or listening to music in which I prefer jazz and classical music. Doing sports helps me keep fit. The reason why I collect books is that I am really keen on reading: Books open to me a whole world of events and people..

I enjoy listening to music, as music helps me relax and relieve stress. When I listen to music I forget about the troubles of everyday life.

2.Do you find it useful to read books?Yes, I do. Because you can learn many things from books?

3. What questions can you ask a British friend about his/her free time? Have you got a lot of free time? Do you often go to the theatre or to the cinema? Do you go in for sports?

4. Give me some advice on what to do in my free time? There are a lot of things to do in your free time. Your plans may depend on several factors: time, your mood, money and may be weather or some other details. To my mind the best way to relax at the weekend in summer is to go somewhere to the country and enjoy nature and quietness. Sometimes it is very pleasant to go for a walk to the park, to eat out, to go to the cinema or to the museum.

5. Many parents think that children should spend less time playing computer games, that they should play outside or do some sport instead. What do you think about this? Unfortunately, today’s children are spending a lot of time in front of the TV, playing on consoles and staring at computer screens. In my view, playing outdoors is so important for children – not only to help them stay active and healthy, but also to socialize with friends.

BELARUSIAN CUSTOMS and TRADITIONS

Now let’s talk about Belarusian customs and traditions. What can you tell me about your favourite holiday?

1. Like other countries, Belarus has its own holidays.
2. People in Belarus celebrate May Day, Victory Day, Independence Day, Christmas, Easter, Kupalle and other holidays.
3. I like New Year’s Day best.
4. New Year’s Day is a family holiday.
5. On the 31st of December all the family get together to see the New Year in.
6. There is usually a holiday dinner with a lot of tasty things and everyone wishes each other “A Happy New Year”.

2. Do you find some Belarusian holidays and traditions special? Why (not)? One of the main traditions of Kupalle is search for the mythic paparats-kvetka (fern flower). Those, who find it, will enjoy good luck for the whole year; all their wishes will come true. This makes the holiday a special one.

3. Imagine you are given the chance to visit Kupalle celebration with your British friend. Ask him/her about his/her impressions.Did you like Kupalle? What did you see there? Did you take part in this celebration?

4. Which holiday celebration in Belarus will you recommend your British friend? I will recommend visiting the medieval festival "The White Castle” which is arranged every spring in Minsk. The spectators can admire performances in costume, combats of knights and ancient music.

BRITISH CUSTOMS and TRADITIONS

1. Let’s talk about customs and traditions of an English–speaking country. What can you tell me about your favourite holiday in Britain? The British celebrate such public holidays as Christmas, Easter, Easter Monday, May Day, the Spring Bank Holiday and the Summer Bank Holiday.
There are other festivals, such as Pancake Day, April Fool’s day, Halloween, Guy Fawkes night, St Valentine’s Day and others.

Halloween is a day on which many children dress up in unusual costumes and go from house to house saying, “Trick or treat!”

It is my favourite British holiday.

It has a Celtic origin and happens on the 31st of October.

The symbols of Halloween are ghosts, spiders, skeletons, witches, black cats, and, of course, pumpkins and scarecrows.

2. Would you like to take part in a British holiday celebration? Why? Certainly, I strongly believe that taking part in the celebration of any of British holidays is interesting, thrilling and funny.

3. Ask your British friend some questions about customs and traditions of Britain. Are there any special traditions in Great Britain? What is your favourite tradition in your country? How do you celebrate New Year?

4. Your friend is going to Great Britain in spring. Give her some advice about holiday to take part in. I think that you should take part in the celebration of Easter because it’s very funny and marry to find eggs.

5. Nowadays more and more people are getting interested in customs and traditions of different countries. What do you think about it? People are not satisfied with their knowledge of national holidays and traditions so they are eager to know something interesting about other countries.

MASS MEDIA

1. Let’s talk about mass media. What does your family like?Mass Media plays a very important role in modern society. The most important means of media include radio, television, newspapers, magazines, and Internet. These sources inform, educate and somehow entertain us. My favourite media resource is Internet. It represents all sources in one. If I want to read the daily news, I go online. When I want to listen to the radio or to watch a new film, again I turn on my computer. Basically, Internet is the media resource which has successfully displaced all other means from use. If I had no Internet at all, I would choose television. This is another media resource which I find engaging and useful. The programs I like watching are Animal Planet and BBC Wildlife Specials. These programs are not only interesting but also educational. I also like watching comedy films and some soap operas. Speaking about printed press, I should say that my parents are subscribed to a local newspaper. They also buy some magazines from time to time. My mum likes reading “Elle” and “Cosmopolitan” magazines and my dad usually buys magazines about motor and racing cars.

2. Is there any means of communication you can’t live without? I can’t live without any means of communication. To tell you the truth we should have rest from any form of communication. But I can’t imagine my everyday life without the Internet. In my view, the Internet is a great source of information and entertainment for many people.

3. What questions will you ask people who live without a TV set, computer or radio? Where do you find information? Why don’t you use radio? Is it boring to live without news?

4. I’d like to watch an interesting programme on TV. What can you advise me? It depends on your preferences and interests. Sometimes people watch TV just to relax. In this case my advice may be very different. So, I personally would recommend you to watch any programmes on Discovery Channel. If you’ve got a pet you would enjoy watching Animal Planet Channel. Also there are many programmes about education and culture. So you’ve got a great choice.

5. Can the Internet replace all the other means of mass media? What is your point of view?

Maybe yes, maybe no. The Internet is a great source of information and entertainment for many people. But there are always those who prefer going to the theatre or reading a good book. We’llliveandwe’llsee.
