FAMILY

Let’s talk about family. What is family for you?

The family is very important as a unit in our society. Nothing else but family can be an emotional center of people's life. Understanding between the members of the family and consideration for others are very important in family relationship. Tenderness, warm-heartedness and respect must always be present in the family to make it friendly.

Now I’d like to tell you about my family. Our family is not large. We are a family of four: my father, my mother, my younger brother and I.

My name is Olga. I am seventeen. I am a school leaver. My younger brother is ten. He is a pupil of the fifth form. He looks like our father. As for me everybody says I look like my mother. I am an ordinary girl of 17.

Our family lives in Gomel. We have a nice three-roomed flat on the fourth floor of a multistoried building. My mother is about 40. She looks pretty well. We all love dearly our Mum, and are always ready to help her about the house. We try to share our duties. My mother is an economist. The firm she works in deals with trading.

My father is an engineer in computers. He is considered to be an experienced engineer. We are very proud of him.

My younger brother also has his duties about the house. He helps mother to set the table and wash the dishes. On Saturdays Dad joins us in our work about the house. He likes to make or repair something. We don't have such problems as misunderstanding between the members of the family. I think that it is due to the age of my parents and their character.

2. Are you on good terms with your parents and grandparents? Frankly speaking I’m on good terms with my parents and grandparents. We don't have such problems as misunderstanding between the members of the family. I think that it is due to the age of my parents and their character.

3. What will you ask a British teenager about his/her family? Have you got a big family? Have you got any family traditions? Do you like to spend your free time with your family?

4. What can you advise people who want to get on well with their parents? I can advise for anyone to try to understand the feelings of your parents and show respect to them. Even if you don’t agree with their thinking, try to make them understand politely, don’t use harsh words with them which may hurt.

5. They say that parents and children have difficulties understanding each other because of the generation gap. What do you think about this problem? It’s sad that families are getting smaller these days. To my mind there should be two or three children in a family. You will never feel lonely in a big family.

2. Are there any things that you do with your parents together? It’s a pity, but my parents and I are usually very busy during the weekdays and we seldom have a chance to spend time together. Sunday is the day when we can sit at a table and talk over everything that happened during the week. Eating together makes us feel close and we often have our most frank conversations at these times.

3. What will you ask your British friend about his/her family relationships? Have you got close relations with your parents? How often do you have misunderstandings with your parents? What do you usually do to solve the problems in your relationships?

4. What can you advise a person who wants to have a close and happy family? First of all I can advise for anyone to try to understand the feelings of your parents and show respect to them. FRIENDSHIP and RELATIONSHIPS with FRIENDS

  1. 1. Let’s talk about friendship. What role do friends play in your life?Friendship is extremely important for every person because everyone needs communication and understanding. A friend is one with whom you spend your free time, share your thoughts and interests, who keeps your secrets, whom you trust and who is always ready to help. I’ve got a lot of friends. Some of them are close, some are not, but all of them make my life brighter and more interesting. In my view friendship is a gift from God. I can’t imagine my life without friends. As a proverb says, “Life without a friend is like death without a witness”.

I think , … is my best friend.

We have much in common: the same interests and attitude to life.

We meet every day at school.

We are the same age.

We spend a lot of time together discussing books, films, solving our problems, planning our future.

We can talk about everything.

I appreciate my friend’s advice.

I know that the way to have a friend is to be one, so my friend can rely on me.

2. Can you rely on your best friends? Everyone knows the proverb "A friend in need is a friend indeed” – according to the old saying a good friend should always help us in difficulties, cheer us up and raise our spirits when we are down, troubled or when nothing is going right. Trust is the most important aspect of any relationship. I believe I can trust my best friend and rely on him.

3. What questions do you usually ask when you want to get acquainted with someone? Have we seen each other before? Where are you from? How do you usually spend your holidays?

4. What can you advise a teenager who has no friends? Frankly speaking it’s not a usual case. Probably, a person with such problems needs advice on behalf of a psychologist. But if someone asks me to help, I will recommend her or him to join some kind of a club or a society to meet people with the same interests.

5. They say: "A person has just one true friend”. What do you think about this? In the reality there are very few true friends. A real friend, on the other hand, is usually one person who shares your life. You can rely on your friend to tell you the truth, even if it’s not always fully pleasant. True friends are hard to find, and are worth holding on to. They are worth more than gold.

EDUCATION

1. Let’s talk about education. What can you tell me about the system of education in Belarus? School year in Belarus starts on the first of September known as a Day of Knowledge and runs through to late May. The school year is divided into four terms, called quarters. Each quarter is followed by holidays: autumn, winter, spring and the longest summer holidays.

Usually classes start at 8 a.m. and last till 2 p.m., so Belarusian schoolchildren have 6-7 lessons a day. They study different subjects: Russian, Belarusian, English, Literatures, History, Geography, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Programming and computer sciences.

The typical Belarusian class contains 20-25 schoolchildren. Ninth grade is the last year of compulsory education. Tenth and eleventh grades offer optional paths, either to vocational secondary schools or to continue to study for university entrance exams. It is required to wear uniforms, so schoolchildren every morning put on suit sets. Girls may choose between a skirt and trousers but a jacket is necessary. There is also a choice of colours.

2. Does your school differ from any other school you know? I don’t think so, but I know exactly that gimnasiums of our districts provide pupils with more profound level of secondary education.

3. Ask me what problems I had when I was a student. Did you visit all lessons in the university? Did you get a scholarship? Have you got any problems with passing the exam?

4. You are talking with a British student. What would you advise him/her to do to prepare for an exam well? To give up watching TV and sitting in front of the computer display and to sit down and work hard with the exam materials.

5. Today some young people want to study abroad because they believe that the level of education is higher there. Would you do the same? Our system of education is based on theoretical preparation of students to their future career. At the same time studying abroad guarantees a good training of practical skills. So I’d prefer to study abroad.

STUDYING at SCHOOL

1. Let’s talk about school. What can you tell me about your school? My school is a three-storeyed building situated in one of the residential districts of our city. There is a sports ground behind the school building and a green lawn with flower beds in front of it.

The school was built 30 years ago though its classrooms are light and spacious. There are maps and portraits, tables and charts on the walls of the classrooms. Our classroom is on the second floor and its windows face the school-yard.

Our lessons start at 8:15 a.m. and last till 14:10 p.m. So we have usually 6-7 lessons a day. Every pupil has a day-book where the teachers wrote down the marks each pupil had earned for his answers. The teacher also writes down the mark in the class register. The pupils are often called to the blackboard to do some exercises or to write some sentences. After every lesson the teachers gave us some home assignments both written and oral. At the next lesson the teachers check them up.

At the end of each year we are promoted to the next form.

2. Do you agree that Belarusian secondary school provides a person with good knowledge? Why (not)? The main objective of the school is not only the development of physical and intellectual capabilities of schoolchildren, ethical and moral properties of a personality, but the formation of children's steady interest to studies. So I fully agree with this statement.

3. Ask me about my school life. What did you like best while studying at school? What was your favourite subject? Have you ever been to your school after finishing it?

4. You are talking with a British student. What would you advise him to do to prepare for an exam?I advise himto give up watching TV and sitting in front of the computer display and to sit down and work hard with the exam materials.

5. Today some young people think that having a good education is not very important. Do you agree with them? In my view only a good education can guarantee a good job in the future of a person. This means that the salary will also be good.

2. Does your school have any traditions? There is a good tradition in our school. Every year people who graduated our school come here to meet their teachers and classmates. CHOOSING a CAREER

1. Let's talk about choosing a career. What do you want to be?It is very important for everybody to make a right choice of profession. There are a lot of honourable professions today. Still, it is difficult for young people to choose. I changed my planes several times about what want to be. I have decided yet that I want to be a lawyer.

It is important to understand that law is not only necessary just because there are bad people in the world. If we were all as good as we ought to be, laws would still be necessary. If we never lied, never took anything that didn't belong to us, never omitted to do anything that we ought to do and never did anything that we ought not to do, we should still require a set of rules of behaviour. In other words these are laws. They enable us to live in any kind of a state.

Every lawyer is required to protect the law. The legal profession is very popular and highly paid today. He is responsible to use laws to help people live safely and comfortably. Still, it is not all an easy work to do.A lawyer gives you pieces of advice on legal problems or gives reasons for defending people in the court. Today a good lawyer is of great demand in our country. I want to become a lawyer devoted to my cause.

2. Does a person need to possess special qualities to become a good specialist in this or that particular field? Why? Yes, a person needs to possess special qualities to become a good specialist in every field because only qualified specialists are real professionals.

3. What questions will you ask your future employer at a job interview? What will be the working conditions? How much will you pay me? Are there any perspectives of advancement?

4. Give me some advice on how to behave at a job interview to create a positive impression on the employer. Show up for the job interview a little early. Being late is a bad first impression and can blow the job. Use your body language to convey your confidence. Speak professionally. Don't ramble or use slang in your answers. Stay positive during the interview. Ask the interviewer some questions about the position and the company. Send a thank you note afterward.

5. Some people think that it is necessary to have a good command of a foreign language to get a good job. Do you agree with this? It is very important for a specialist in business matters to speak at least one foreign language. It should better be English as it is the most popular language of international business communication. You'll be able to follow business developments in the world by listening to radio and TV news, by reading newspapers or magazines, or by getting in contact with your business partners abroad.
