Episode 6

SUCCESS AND PROBLEMS

S c e n e o n e

Six months have passed since the last episode. Jayal Motors have become very popular in Industria. Sales have gone up sharply - 200 units a month. But now at Jayal Motors there are various problems for Paul, Tom and Jack to sort out.

Jack:What’s the matter, Paul?

Paul: Well, our last shipment arrived in Industria damaged - frames were buckled in transit. We have to send 100 replacement bikes fast.

Tom: How did this happen? Who is responsible?

Paul: The shipping company, I imagine ... Something was wrong with the packaging or handling.

Jack:Our insurance should set off losses. I’ll get on to the shipping company right now.

Paul: No, I’ll do that, Jack. Look, we shall have to order more parts for the bikes, too. I want you to look after that, Jack. You know, we are becoming very heavily dependent on a couple of firms for components.

Jack:Yes, it’s at times like this that this kind of dependence could ruin us. A hold up in the delivery of the components means a hold up in the production of the bikes... and we lose our clients. What do you think, Paul?

Paul: As I see it, what we need to do is to manufacture our own parts.

Jack:Yes, you’re absolutely right, Paul.

Tom: Now, wait a minute, you two. I’ve been sitting here, listening to what you’ve been saying... and I’m running out of patience. Don’t talk of expansion now when there are more immediate problems to be solved. I will hear no more about expansion for the moment.

Paul: Yes. But we’d better telex Cornell an apology. Really, you know, someone should go over there and see what’s happening. Our clients have got to be reassured.

Tom: Well, you  are not going for a start! Jack, I think it’s about time you  had a trip to Industria.

Jack:Fine! There is just one problem - the workers! They’ll need to do overtime to get the replacements ready. It will mean an extra bonus for them.

Tom: Agreed! It’s not a problem to worry about.

Ex. 1. Answer the following questions.

1. Did bikes arrive in Industria damaged or undamaged? 2. What happened in transit? 3. Who is responsible for damaging? 4. Who will have to pay for losses? 5. How many replacement bikes do they have to send to Industria? 6. Do Jayal Motors produce components for the bikes? 7. How many firms supply Jayal Motors with spare parts for the bikes? 8. Why do Jayal Motors need to manufacture their own components? 9. Did Tom support the idea of producing components for the bikes at their plant? 10. Can Jayal Motors send new bikes instead of damaged ones at once? Why? 11. Why did Jack propose an extra bonus for the workers?     12. Who has to go to Industria?

Ex. 2. Arrange the words in their proper order and say if the following statements are true or false.

1) has been damaged; of; mopeds; a consignment. 2) the shipping company; thinks; is; the fault of; the damage; Paul. 3) will have to; the damaged bikes; Jayal Motors; pay for. 4) spare parts; too dependent on; are worried; Paul and Jack; one or two suppliers of; about becoming. 5) should start making; Jayal Motors; Paul; spare parts; that; suggests. 6) will have to; Jayal Motors; the damaged bikes; to replace; to pay the workers; more. 7) is against paying; the workers; a bonus; Tom.

Ex. 3. This is the body of a letter written to Jayal Motors on 10th September by one of their clients (Mr. P. Andrews, Sales manager). The first line and the last line are correct, but the other lines are in the wrong order. Write out the letter in full with the lines in the correct order. Translate the letter into Russian.

Write a formal letter from Bill Cornell to Jayal Motors about the damaged bikes he received. The bikes arrived in Centreville on October 5th and Bill Cornell wrote on the same day.

Kamal arrives to see Paul at his office.

Kamal:I’m terribly sorry to drop in on you at this time on Friday, Paul, but it’s rather important.

Paul:What’s the problem?

Kamal:Well, I won’t keep you long. You see, there is a problem with the exchange rate - the Industria pound has taken a fall on the foreign exchange market. You see, there has been a sharp increase in Industria’s balance of payment deficit.

Paul:I see, that’s serious, isn’t it?

Kamal:As you know, there have been reports of industrial unrest (pay problems as usual) and the prospects for the pound look pretty gloomy.

Paul:And it’s going to affect us, as if we didn’t have enough problems on our hands.

Kamal:So, I thought it would be wise to take out forward exchange cover to protect our position on the outstanding contracts.

Paul:Just a minute. Forward exchange cover? What does it mean exactly?

Kamal:Well, it means that Jayal Motors enters into a commitment to sell Industria pounds forward at the present rate against the utile.

Paul:I see. And how will that benefit us?

Kamal:Jayal Motors won’t lose out, if the Industria pound falls further.

Paul:What will it cost, Kamal?

Kamal:A small percentage about 1 per cent and that can be built into the price of the bike.

Paul:Well, I don’t suppose there is much alternative. All right, Kamal. Let’s put it into action.

Kamal:By the way, I’ve heard about damaged bikes. Any news from Industria?

Paul:Yes, Bill has phoned today. He doesn’t mind waiting till the replacements arrive.

Kamal:Well, that’s fine.
