After breakfast I sent children to school and then went to market. It was still early when I returned home. The children were studying at school, my husband was working at his office and the house was quiet. So I decided to do some washing. In a short time I was busy putting the towels into the water. My hands were all covered with suds. At exactly that moment the telephone rang. I picked up the receiver between two wet fingers.
It was my old friend Ann. It took me ten minutes to explain to her that I was washing and couldn’t speak to her. I asked her to ring up later. At last I hung up the receiver. What a mess! There was soap on the telephone and on the door-knobs. I had no sooner got back to the kitchen than the doorbell rang. It was the postman and he wanted me to sign for a registered letter.

Many teenage girls want to be stewardesses. They think it is a lovely job. The money is very good and you can travel cheaply all over the world – when you have free time. I live in a flat with a stewardess and I know that her job is very difficult and tiring. Louise never has time for anything. She often has to rush to the airport at five o’clock in the morning. She never knows exactly where she will be at any time. Her plans are never definite until the last minute. Every time I see her she is running, with a suit-case in one hand, looking at her watch.
Last week on a flight from New York to London all the cabin crew were busily serving meals and drinks to the hundreds of passengers. There were some children jumping up and down in their seats shouting for more orange squash. Then the chief stewardess noticed a strange smell which was coming from one of the kitchens on the 747. “What is that smell?” she asked Louise. “It’s the roast beef cooking,” Louise replied. “But we are not serving roast beef in its flight,” the chief stewardess said.
“I know,” Louise explained. “But I am going to have a dinner party tonight and I won’t have time to cook it when I get home!”
