In English we find many proverbs and sayings telling about idleness and hard work, aspiration to knowledge.

No pains, no gains. . It is similar to Russian: Без труда нет плода ( добра ). Без

Труда не вытащишь и рыбку из пруда.

Idleness rusts the mind.-

A bad workman always blames his tools.

A good beginning is half the worn.

A good beginning makes a good ending.

The perfect human qualities such as kindness, love, responsibility, honesty and nobility have always been appreciated by the English and the Russian.

These moral qualities are spoken about in many proverbs and sayings.

Charity begins at home. -

Don’t strike a man when he is down.

Confession is good for a soul.

Comparing English and the Russian proverbs and sayings we can notice different attitudes of both nations to Motherland. For the English Motherland is their home.

My home is my castle. It is similar to Russian:Мой дом - моя крепость

East or West home is best. It is similar to Russian: В гостях хорошо , а дома лучше .

In Russia love for Motherland is a part of national character. We love our Motherland dearly and anxiously.

Studying English and Russian proverbs and sayings, we found an interesting fact, that there are many names of the family members in Russian proverbs and sayings.

We decided that the Russian love a large family and support friendly and tight relations among all the relatives. However, the English mention the family members in proverbs and sayings much less. Generally, the English prefer to live in small families.

Like father, like son. –

Necessity is the mother of invention. -

All in all, we consider that English and Russian proverbs and sayings are different because they were made up in different historical circumstances. The development of both countries, their distinctive geographical positions, climate, culture, traditions influenced the national life and the national character. That is why, there are many proverbs and sayings in Russian which absolutely do not coincide with the English ones. But at the same time we find many equivalents in both languages due to similar attitudes, relations and moral features.

III. Conclusion

Carrying out our project we tried to analyze the peculiarities of national way of life and national character of the English and the Russian nations through proverbs and sayings. It is considered that proverbs and sayings are folklore speech where not only the person’s point of view but also general people’s outlook is expressed.

Studying literature and the Internet resources we found out similar and different characteristics in the way of life, national character, culture and moral preferences of the English and the Russian.

We got to know that proverbs and sayings are various and universal expressions, so they can be found in every sphere of human life. For our project work 100 proverbs and sayings were chosen, classified and compared according to their topical meanings, metaphorical sense and correlation of English proverbs and sayings to their Russian equivalents. Thus, three groups of proverbs and sayings were defined. Such classification is useful for the learners of English.

Summing up, it’s worth mentioning that the results of this project work help us and the others to enrich knowledge of English, learn closer the national way of life, national character and culture of both nations.
