FLU VS COMMON COLD IN CHILDREN

Flu is a viral infection. It's passed on when people breathe in liquid droplets containing the influenza virus that other people sneeze or cough into the air, or when people touch objects contaminated with the virus. Flu is characterized by sudden onset of the disease, fever, headache, decreased appetite, muscle aches, cough, sore throat, chills.

But if the onset of the disease is gradual, fever is mild, the child has no headache, pains in the muscles and chills, the appetite is normal, it's most likely a cold. In case of a common cold usually only the nose, throat, sinuses and upper chest are affected.

Flu can cause serious complications, including pneumonia, and can even be fatal. To avoid these complications doctors prescribe antiviral therapy, but it is effective only within 48 hours of the onset of the disease. Antibiotics do not work in case of flu. Most of the time, you can care for your child by offering plenty of fluids, rest, and extra comfort.

ACUTE BRONCHITIS VS PNEUMONIA IN CHILDREN

Bronchitis and pneumonia affect the lungs and the respiratory system but are two different conditions. Bronchitis is the inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, while pneumonia is characterized by an infection of the lung tissues.

Bronchitis can be caused by bacterial and viral infections. Children often develop acute bronchitis from cold or other respiratory infections. Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites and other microorganisms. Children often  get pneumonia as a complication of flu. Bronchitis is mainly of two types, acute and chronic. Acute bronchitis usually lasts for a week or so, while chronic bronchitis can last for more than three months. Pneumonia can be of several types, such as viral pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia, atypical pneumonia, eosinophilic pneumonia.

Cough is the main symptom of acute bronchitis, which in the early stage, can be dry. Other symptoms of bronchitis are headache, generally feeling ill, chills, mild fever, shortness of breath, feeling of tightness in the chest, wheezing.

Pneumonia also causes cough. A dry or non-productive cough is usually experienced in case of viral pneumonia, which may gradually worsen into a productive cough. With bacterial pneumonia, one can experience a cough that produces green, pus-like or rust-colored sputum. In the early stage, pneumonia can produce flu-like symptoms: high fever, chills, sweating, fatigue, chest pain, muscle pain, nausea and vomiting.
