Name the characteristics of cloud computing?

Basic cloud computing charasterictics

The “no-need-to-know” in terms of the underlying details of infrastructure, applications interface with the infrastructure via the APIs.

•The “flexibility and elasticity” allows these systems to scale up and down at will

–utilising the resources of all kinds

•CPU, storage, server capacity, load balancing, and databases

The “pay as much as used and needed” type of utility computing and the “always on!, anywhere and any place” type of network-based computing

•Cloud are transparent to users and applications, they can be built in multiple ways

–branded products, proprietary open source, hardware or software, or just off-the-shelf PCs.

In general, they are built on clusters of PC servers and off-the-shelf components plus Open Source software combined with in-house applications and/or system software

What are mobile technologies?

Mobile technology is a collective term used to describe the various types of cellular communication technology. Mobile code division multiple access (CDMA) technology has evolved rapidly over the past few years. Since the start of this millennium, a standard mobile device has gone from being no more than a simple two-way pager to being a mobile phone, GPS navigation device, an embedded web browser and instant messaging client, and a handheld game console. Many experts argue that the future of computer technology rests in mobile computing with wireless networking. Mobile computing by way of tablet computers are becoming more popular. Tablets are available on the 3G and 4G networks.

Many types of mobile operating systems are available for smartphones, including: Android, BlackBerry OS, webOS, iOS, Symbian, Windows Mobile Professional (touch screen), Windows Mobile Standard (non-touch screen), and Bada. Among them most popular are the Apple iPhone, and the newest – Android. Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google. Android is the first completely open source mobile OS, meaning that it is free to any cell phone mobile network.O ne of the most important features in the 4G mobile networks is the domination of high-speed packet transmissions or burst traffic in the channels. The same codes used in the 2G-3G networks are applied to 4G mobile or wireless networks, the detection of very short bursts will be a serious problem due to their very poor partial correlation properties.

What are multimedia technologies?

Multimedia technologies- Computer-based techniques of text, images, audio, video, graphics, animation, and any other medium where every type of information can be represented, processed, stored, transmitted, produced and presented digitally.

Multimedia: refers to various information forms text, image, audio, video, graphics, and animation in a variety of application environments

Media in the press: newspaper, radio and TV context - mass media

- Media in communications: cables, satellite, network – transmission media

- Media in computer storage: CD, DVD, HD, USB – storage media

- Media in HCI context: text, image, audio, video, CG – interaction media

Text - ASCII/Unicode, HTML, Postscript, PDF

• Audio– Sound, music, speech, structured audio (e.g. MIDI)

• Still Image- Facsimile, photo, scanned image

• Video(Moving Images) – Movie, a sequence of pictures

• Graphics– Computer produced image

• Animation– A sequence of graphics images

Types of multimedia

A bitmap graphic, also called a raster graphic or simply a bitmap, is composed of a grid of dots. The color of each dot is stored as a binary number. Think of a grid superimposed on a picture.

Digital audiois music, speech, and other sounds represented in binary format for use in digital devices. Sound is produced by the vibration of matter such as a violin string or a drum head. This vibration causes pressure changes in the surrounding air, creating waves.

A vector graphic consists of a set of instructions for re-creating a picture. Instead of storing the color value for each pixel, a vector graphic file contains the instructions the computer needs to create the shape, size, position, and color for each object in an image.

Computer animation is the process used for generating animated images. 3-D graphics can be animated to produce special effects for movies or to create interactive, animated characters and environments for 3-D computer games.

A video is a series of still frames projected at a rate fast enough to fool the human eye into perceiving continuous motion. Digital video uses bits to store color and brightness data for each video frame. The process is similar to storing the data for a series of bitmap images in which the color for each pixel is represented by a binary number.

Where multimedia is used?

Media is used in:

- The press: newspaper, radio and TV context (mass media)

- Communications: cables, satellite, network (transmission media)

- computer storage: CD, DVD, HD, USB (storage media)

- HCI context: text, image, audio, video, CG (interaction media)

1. Multimedia is appropriate whenever a human interface connects a human user to electronic information of any kind. It enhances the text-only interface by gaining and holding attention, thus improves information retention.

2. Multimedia can be used in various sectors such as business, administration, government, broadcasting, entertainment, transportation and so on.

a. Business

         i.   Traditionally, communication in business is done verbally, on printed media, slide shows and videos. Multimedia can recreate all these types of communication to be more interesting. Business applications for multimedia include presentations, training, marketing, advertising, product demos, databases, catalogues and networked communications.

ii.   Now, multimedia applications are getting more advanced and complex. Below are more examples of multimedia applications which are getting more popular in today’s business environment.

b. Government

      i.   Government is taking advantage of multimedia by incorporating multimedia into their administration system. Beginning in 1998, Malaysia is planning to make a full use of multimedia by introducing e-government, paperless office, video conferencing, multimedia kiosks and multimedia electronic mail.

ii.   Realizing the potential of multimedia, the government has made a big move to exploit this potential by introducing Multimedia Super Corridor with seven flagship applications. The MSC will also accelerate Malaysia's entry into the Information Age, and through it, help actualize Vision 2020.

iii.   There are four main objectives :

1. To increase the efficiency and productivity in production, delivering products and service for both public and private sectors.

2. To introduce the network of supply and demand of local multimedia industry to international market.

3. To increase the value of infrastructure placed within MSC with suitable technology including KLIA, Putrajaya, highway network and electronic highway.

4. To stimulate growth of e-government through Putrajaya to be more transparent, flexible and responsive.
