A STAR FOR A STATE

The American flag is the emblem of the United States. When the thirteen British colonies in America became the United States of America on July 4, 1776, the flag, had thirteen red and while stripes and thirteen stars in a circle on a blue field. There was one star and one stripe for each state.

It was the official flag until May 1, 1795, by then the country had two more states. Congrees added two stars and two stripes to the flag. In 1818 there were twenty states, but the flag did not look right with twenty stripes.

Now the flag does not have a stripe for each state. It just has one for each of the thirteen original states. There are fifty stars, one for each of the fifty states. Whenever the country admits a new state, it adds a new star to the flag on the next fourth of July. In 1959 flagmakers added new stars for Alaska and Hawaii.

The capital of the United - States of America is Washington. However, the city NewYork, the biggest city in the world, situated at the mouth of Hudson River, can be called the capital not only of the USA but even of the whole capitalist world. New York consists of five districts - the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Richmond. Its total area is 365 square miles, or about 900 square kilometres, and it has a population of over eight million inhabitants.

And if we count the many suburbs of the city, its population comes to about thirteen million. In New York City, there are representatives of nearly all the world's races and nationalities and when you walk in the streets and avenues of Manhattan you can hear practically every language in the world.

In the city of New York alone, there are more than one million Afro-Americans. They mostly live in Harlem, the poorest district of New York.

The highest building in New York is the World Trade Centre which has 110 storeys. The

geographic centre of New York is Columbus Circle, in the centre of which there is the Memorial to Christopher Columbus. There are some museums and art galleries in New York. The most famous are the American Museum of Natural History and Metropolitan Museum of Art. The most important educational institutions in New York are New York University and Columbia University. New York is a city of contrasts. It associates with great business, money, wealth, beauty, unemployment, poverty and criminality.

New York's situation at the mouth of the Hudson Rive made it the biggest port in the USA and in fact in the worl Every year, a great number of big ships from all countries с be seen in the New York Docks. They bring or take away, be sides passengers, material for or the product of the highly de veloped industry of the United States.

I A traveller who visits New ҮогУ for the first time wonders at the new architecture. The Statue of Liberty, which he sees on Liberty Island if he arrives by sea, was apresent from France for the hundredth anniversary of American independence. This, and a few eighteenth and nineteenth century churched, hospitals, newspaper offices and other buildings are the only examples of "old" architecture in New York. Everywhere one sees sky-scrapers.

This biggest of all is the Empire State Building, which rises 1,250 feet (over 400 metres) above the ground and has 102 storeys. But it is not alone. Since the Second World War a lot of sky-scrapers of more than 30 storeys have been built in New York. One of them was the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan.

In New York, when you walk in the street, you are caught up in the stream of people hurrying along the streets and of motorcars and buses speeding from one place to another. But the movement is not only in the streets, it is under them and above them. Besides the underground railway, which the people о I New York call the subway, there is also the elevated railway over the streets joining different parts of the city. The old saying that "time is money" is a rule here; speed is necessary to make more money.
