Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Formula and the value of the body.

Also known as: cAMP, Adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate, Adenosine 3',5'-cyclophosphate, cyclic 3',5'-AMP, Adenosine 3',5'-phosphate

Molecular Formula: C10H12N5O6P Molecular Weight: 329.205942 InChIKey: IVOMOUWHDPKRLL-KQYNXXCUSA-N

An adenine nucleotide containing one phosphate group which is esterified to both the 3'- and 5'-positions of the sugar moiety. It is a second messenger and a key intracellular regulator, functioning as a mediator of activity for a number of hormones, including epinephrine, glucagon, and ACTH.

Functions

cAMP is a second messenger, used for intracellular signal transduction, such as transferring into cells the effects of hormones likeglucagon and adrenaline, which cannot pass through the cell membrane. It is involved in the activation of protein kinases and regulates the effects of adrenaline and glucagon. cAMP also binds to and regulates the function of ion channels such as the HCN channels and a few other cyclic nucleotide-binding proteins such as Epac1 and RAPGEF2.
