The White House

1600, Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. is a very special address. It’s the address of the White House, the home of the President of the United States.

Originally the White House was grey and was called the Presidential Palace. It was built from 1792 to 1800. George Washington, the first president, and P.C. L’Enfant, a French engineer, chose (выбрали) the place for the new city.

In 1814during the war the British invaded Washington. They burned many buildings, including the Presidential Palace. After war the building was painted white to cover the marks of the fire. It became known as the White House.

The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Libertygreets people who come to New York by sea. It has become a symbol of the city and an expression of freedom.

The statue shows liberty as a proud woman in the graceful clothes. In her uplifted (поднятой) right hand, she holds a torch. She wears a crown with seven spikes that are the light of liberty shining on the seven seas and seven continents. In her left arm, she holds a tablet with the date of the declaration of independence. A chain that represents tyranny lies broken at her feet.

The Statue of Liberty was France’s gift to America. It was designed by the French sculptor Bartholdi and presented to the USA in 1886. The Lady in the Harbor stands 151 feet tall, weighs nearly 225 tons.

There is a museum in the base of the statue devoted to the history of immigration to the United States.

Sikorsky Igor Ivanovich was a well-known aircraft engineer and manufacturer. He was born in 1889 in Kiev, in the Ukraine, and got his education at the naval college in St. Petersburg, and later in Kiev and Paris. He was the first to make experiments in helicopter design. 12. Do you agree that computers have completely changed our lives?

2. Translate into Russian. Переведите на русский язык : The BERMUDA TRIANGLE

There are many explanations (объяснений) both fantastic and scientific. Here are some fantastic explanations:1) the UFOs have their base within the triangle. They destroy ships and planes.

2) the lost country of Atlantis is under the sea within the Bermuda triangle. People of Atlantis live under the sea. They take our ships and planes, and, sometimes, people to their country.

3) at the bottom of the sea there are strange and unknown animals. They attack and destroy ships, planes, and people within triangle.

And here are some scientific explanations.

1)The Bermuda Triangle area as well as some other areas on the Earth has very changeable weather. It means that in these areas seamen can get into a typhoon or a giant whirlwind (вихрь) at any moment. It was discovered with the help of an earth satellite. But scientists can not explain the origin of such whirlwinds, and why, how and when these whirlwinds stop their existence.

2) But how can we explain cases when the ships remain untouched and the people disappear die of terror or go mad? Some scientific interpretation is called “the voice of the sea”. It sounds like this: very powerful infra-sound vibrations can be formed on the surface of water, and they are very dangerous: they may provoke headaches, feeling of terror, brain disorder, and finally death.
