Задание № 1.

Перевод текста о Лондоне (индивидуально; в письменной/ устной форме; любой текст на выбор)

LONDON IS LONDON

Our dream to visit London has come true! I think everybody wishes to visit London and see everything with own eyes.

London is the capital of England (Great Britain). It is a wonderful city. It is a very old city, too. There are a lot of places of interest: museums, monuments, parks. There are many cinemas, theatres, galleries.

What is special in London? First of all public transport. The main means of transport are buses, the underground and taxi cabs. There are no trams or trolleybuses in London. It is unusual for a big city. Red London double-decker buses have become the symbol of London. Today there are also double-deckers of different colours: green, black and yellow.

Secondly London is a green city. There are a lot of parks and gardens there. Our hotel was near Hyde park and we came there to rest, to play games and to look at the flowers and trees. We also visited St James’ and Regent’s Park.

Surprising, but we didn’t see teenagers in the streets. We saw them only in the museums. We were explained (намобъяснили)that pupils are at school till 4p.m. and after school they try to earn money for their needs. They do baby-sitting, help old people, do homework with small children and so on.

Every country is proud of its past and London has a lot of things to see. There are many places of interest: the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, the Tower, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, the British Museum, the National History Museum, Madame Tussaud’s Museum and the residences of the Queen, Buckingham Palace and Windsor.

Madame Tussaud’s Museum is an exhibition of hundreds of life-size wax models of famous people of yesterday and today. Here you can meet Elton John, David Beckham, Marilyn Monroe, Putin, Picasso, the Royal Family, Julia Roberts,, the Beatles and many others: singers, writers, sportsmen, politicians, movie stars.

And, of course, shopping. Oxford Street is really the main shopping street. It is very long and there are a lot of big and small shops for different tastes.

LONDON’S EAST END

One of London’s most interesting and undiscovered areas is the East End. In the 1880s, Jack the Ripper stalked (крался) these tiny backstreets, and at the same time William Booth, “the East End Saint”, set up the Salvation Army. American Liberty Bell was made in the still existing 16^th-century bell foundry (литейный завод) and it’s also where “East End Mafia” operated in the 1960s.

The East End is a slice of “real” London and represents its today’s culture when you are sitting in a pub in the East End, listening to someone tell you incredible stories.

The East End is especially famous as the center of the clothing industry (or “rag-trade”) in London. The East End markets are famous throughout the world. Petticoat home market takes place every Sunday morning and has become one of the sights of London.

MADAM TUSSAUD’S

It is the most popular and talked about wax museum in the world. There are wax models of the famous and infamous, both living and dead, from every walk of life.

Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin, the British Royal family, Bill Clinton, Jack the Ripper… There is no one place where you can see all the celebrities at once, even if they are only wax figures.

The museum is situated in Marylebone Road. There are several halls at Madam Tussaud’s. Highlights include the Grand hall, the Chamber of Horrors and the “Spirit of London” exhibition. The wax figures are extremely realistic and when they look at you, their eyes sparkling, you often feel uncomfortable in their company. They stand, sit, sometimes even move and talk. Computer controlled figures (audioanimatronics) are especially popular with the visitors.

New models are being produced all the time while the old ones are quietly removed from the display.

York. The city is the home of the National Railway museum.

In866VikingsinvadedYork. It became the capital of the Viking Kingdom. They called it Yorvik. Today there’s Viking Centre in the city.

Manchester. A great commercial center. In the late XIX century it became the main trade center of cotton goods for the world market.

After the World War II the city has acquired buildings of modern design with contrast with its Victorian Gothic town hall.

Has more than 12,000 sports clubs. Manchester United is the world’s most famous football club.

The Metro link – Europe’s most modern on-street transport system.

In 1993 a new international terminal at Manchester Airport was built. It is welcoming 24 million people a day.

There are 3 symphony orchestras, 15 theatres, 23 art galleries and museums. 4 universities with 45,000 students from 120 countries are here. 19 Nobel Prize winners came from Manchester.

WESTMINSTER ABBEY

Opposite the Houses of Parliament stands Westminster Abbey. A church has stood here since Saxon times when, in the year 750 AD a Benedictine Abbey was founded. It was known as West Monastery (Westminster). From Norman times British monarchs have been crowned there and since the 13^th century they have been buried there. Many other famous people are also buried in Westminster Abbey. In Poet’s Corner can be found statues and the tombs of poets.
