- What national and international youth organisations do you know?
The 20th century is characterized by the creation of international organizations.
The name United Nations was devised by United States and was first used in the “Declaration by United Nations” of 1 January 1942, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their governments to continue fighting together against Germany, Japan and Italy. The Charter of the United Nations was signed by 51 states on 26 June 1945. This day is now celebrated each year throughout the world as United Nations Day. Belarus is a member of the United Nations.
A specialized agency of the United Nations is UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). It was founded in 1946. It promotes international collaboration in education, science and culture. UNESCO also works to study, develop and promote cultural heritage and protect historic monuments and the natural environment.
Now I’d like to tell you about the World Health Organization (WHO). It began its activities in 1948. It is a specialized agency designed to further international cooperation for improved health conditions. The major function of the WHO is to establish measures for the control of epidemic diseases.
Another medical organization is the Red Cross and Red Crescent. The Red Cross is an humanitarian agency with national affiliates in almost every country in the world. The Red Cross movement began in 1863. Its peacetime activities include first aid, accident prevention, water safety, training of nurses’ aids and mothers’ assistants and maintenance of maternal and child welfare centres, clinics, blood banks and numerous other services.
Greenpeace is an international nongovernmental organization dedicated to preserving endangered species of animals, preventing environmental abuses and taking care of wildlife. Greenpeace was founded in 1971 in Vancouver, Canada. It brought together people concerned with terrible abuses to the environment. The organization has a small staff and relies largely on voluntary staffing and funding. Greenpeace also campaigns. Today it is a global organization with national offices in 27 countries.

The largest non-political organization is The Scout Movement. The membership is voluntary, they have a special badge, a training programme and the motto “Be prepared”. They develop such skills as honesty, obedience, patriotism, kindness. The Belarusian Pioneer Movement is a part of the Scout Movement.
The most important youth organization in Belarus is the Belarusian Republican Youth Union or the BRSM. Its goals are to promote patriotism, moral values and they organize such activities as camping, sport events, concerts, volunteer work, charity and different demonstrations to support the present power in our country. The BRSM was founded in 2002 and it has its own emblem and flag.
As for me, I’m not a member of any organization. But I think that youth organizations do useful work to help young people to take an active part in social and political life of the country.
- Have you ever taken part in any meaningful international events?
Sorry to say, but I’m not a member of any youth organization because I have no free time and I haven’t taken part in any international events. But once I took part in a concert organized by the BRSM and it was wonderful. I am proud that I was one of them.
- What questions will you ask about a new project organized by the BRSM?
Why did you organize this project? Do you have any sponsors? How many people are involved into this project? What are the results of this project?
- Some young people want to become volunteers but don’t know what to start with. What will you recommend them to do?
Voluntary programs are a great opportunity to learn more about yourself, but you will enjoy it only if you are totally interested in it. If you like ecology, languages, art or anything else, try to choose something related to it. Only in that way you will learn a lot and you will spend your time in the best way. Here are some tips: find all necessary information about your new work. Prepare for changes. Be creative. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Try to find other volunteers and people with whom you can share your life and experience.

- If you have a chance to start a campaign, what will you campaign for?
If I had a chance to start campaign, it would be “Campaign against smoking” because I think smoking is the most common bad habit nowadays. A lot of people die because of this habit. About 80% of smokers die sooner than their peers. I think we should promote a healthy way of life among teenagers because they are the future of our nation.
