Performance of homa by Dvijas

Vyasa said, “Every Brahmana should perform Agnihotra rite (homa) daily in the morning as well as in the evening. At the end of the dark fortnight (the new moon day), this rite has to be performed days after the conclusion of a beneficial rite and on reaping the harvest afresh.

A Brahmana should perform a homa (sacrifices) at the end of every season. At the end of a Ay ana, he should perform an animal sacrifice. At the end of the year, the soma- yajhas should be performed by the performer of the homa.

The Agnihotrin Brahmana, desirous of long life, should not take cooked food or meat, without performing the yajna of fresh harvest and the animal sacrifice.

An Agnihotrin Brahmana, who without performing the sacrifice with fresh grains or with animals as havyas (oblations), consumes the food or the meat, then the fires of yajna of the same Agnihotrin becomes desirous of taking out his life.

The Agnihotrin should on each and every festive occasion, for the sake of the sun-god, perform homas and in the Astaka and Anvastaka days, he should worship the Pitrs.

The aforesaid dharma is indeed the best and the rest is called apaddharma (unrighteous). This is the procedure meant for the three varnas including Brahmanas.

A person who due to his laziness or otherwise does not intend to perform homa or does not adore the gods by means of the yajhas, he has to fall in several hells.

О Brahmanas, the evil minded person, falls in the terrific hells including Tamisra,Andhatamisra, Maharaurava, Kumbhlpaka,VaitaranI, Asipatravana, and other terrific hells and thereafter he is bom in the race of the Candalas or Sudras.

Therefore, a Brahmana, getting purified completely, should adore Paramesvara, invoking the fire.

There is no better dharma for the Brahmanas in this world than the Agnihotra, therefore, he should adore Ishvara always, performing the Agnihotra.

A person who himself being Agnihotrin, does not perform yajha out of lethargy, such an immensely foolish person is not fit to be conversed with, then what to speak about the atheist?

A person who possesses the food for three years to feed his dependants, or more than that, only he is entitled to drink the Soma juice.

The Soma sacrifice is considered to be the best of all the yajnas. With the performing of the yajha in Somaloka, one should propitiate lord Mahesvara of the Region of Soma.

For the worship of Mahesvara Shiva, there is no other yajna better than the Soma-yajna. Therefore, Parames'vara should be propitiatd by means of Soma sacrifice.

Lord Brahma, the Grand-sire, in earlier times, for the redemption of the Brahmanas, had specified the sacrificial animal and the dharma, conducive to salvation viz.: Srauta and Smarta.

Out of these two, the srauta-dharma has been related to three types of fires (viz.:- Daksindgni, Garhapatya and Ahavaniya), while the Smarta- dharma has already been described by me. Out of these two, the Srauta-dharma is more beneficial, which should be followed by all.

Both these dharmas emerge from the Vedas and are therefore quite beneficial. In the absence of srutis and smrtis, the Sistacara (conduct of the noble people) will be the third source of religion.

Those having studied the Vedas and their supplementary works quite extensively, such Brahmanas possessing all the virtues endowed with the qualities of the Atman, are called Sistas (noble).

The conduct of such people has also been termed as dharma, by the excellent people. The conduct of the other people (who are ungraceful) cannot be taken to be dharma. This is opinion of the scriptures.

The Puranas and the religious treatises represent the expansion of the Vedas. From one, the Brahman is realised, and from the other, dharma (rituals of religion) is realised.

Therefore, those, who are in search for dharma and those in search of Brahman, for them Puranas and Dharmasastras are indeed the best.

Apart from these two, there is no other way by which a person could achieve knowledge about dharma or the Vedic Brahmavidya. Therefore, the learned people should be devoted to Puranas and the Dharmas'astras.
