Exercise 2.1

Choose the correct tense form.

 

1. I have read/ have been reading the whole day.

2. How many pages have you read/have you been reading so far?

3. We have walked/ have been walking five kilometres.

4. We have walked/ have been walking for two hours.

5. We have walked/ have been walking too fast. That’s why we’re tired.

6. That guy has eaten/has been eating twenty doughnuts.

7. He has eaten/has been eating since he arrived.

8. I have only heard/have only been hearing from him twice this year.

9. Things have changed/have been changing since I was a girl.

10. Mary has been lived/has been living in this city for twenty years.

11. Why have you been/have you being in the garage so long?

12. I have made/ have been making sandwiches all morning. – How many have you made/ have you been making?

13. What a lovely smell! – Yes, mum has roasted/ has been roasting chicken.

14. We have picked/ have been picking apples since morning and we have picked/ have been picking three basketfuls.

 

Exercise 2.2

Put the verbs in brackets in the Present Perfect Simple or Continuous. Sometimes both the tenses are possible.

 

1. Jim (plant) trees in the garden all day.           has been planting

2. He (plant) ten trees so far.

3. I can’t drive. I (drink).

4. I (do) my homework. I can go for a walk now.

5. He (work) in this office for a month.

6. The personnel manager (speak) to all the applicants.

Exercise 2.3

Ask two questions to every sentence starting with How long and How much/How many.

 

1. I’m learning Japanese.

How long have you been learning it? How many Japanese books have you read?

2. I’m making doughnuts.

3. I’m looking for a job.

4. I’m travelling round Europe.

5. Linda is doing the shopping.

6. Michael is fishing.

Exercise 2.4

Read the letter. Put the verbs in brackets in the Present Perfect Simple or Continuous.

 

Dear Arthur,

I was glad to get your letter yesterday. Things at home (1) … (be) the same so far. Your mother (2) … (work) hard. I (3) … (not hear) from Tim. Probably he (4) … (revise) for the exams recently. Exercise 3.1

Write sentences about these situations with since or for. Use Present Perfect Simple, Present Perfect Continuous, Past Simple or Past Continuous.

1. I run a small business. I started it in 1998.

I’ve been running a small business since 1998.

2. Jake plays the cello. He started two years ago.

3. My brother lives in Bern. He moved there last year.

4. It started raining at six o’clock. It’s still raining.

5. I started cooking at eleven. Lunch was ready an hour later.

6. My granny wears glasses. She started wearing them ten years ago.

7. I drive a car. I got it for my birthday.

8. Gary plays football. He started several years ago.

9. Harold got a job as a sales manager in 1987. He retired five years later.

10. Mary is a nurse. She got her diploma in April.

11. The kids are playing computer games. They started right after lunch.

12. Sam has got his own sports club. He bought it three years ago.

13. In 1980 Ronald Reagan won the presidential election. Nine years later he left office.

Exercise 3.3

Use the correct tense form of the verb in brackets, Present Perfect Simple or Continuous, Present, Past or Future Simple.

Read the job interview. Put the verbs in the correct tense form.
