Попрыгунья Стрекоза

Лето красное пропела;

Оглянуться не успела,

The Ant and Grasshopper

While a grasshopper was taking it easy in the shade one hot summer’s day, an ant struggled in the sun with a grain of rice that he was carring out of his nest.

«Hey, Mister Ant,» said the grasshopper. «Why don’t you take it easy, like me? You can work tomorrow.» The ant paused. «I’m saving up food now for the cold ahead, and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll do the same,» he said.

Three or four months later winter came and it was very cold. While the ant was comfortably arranged in his nest, the starving grasshopper shivered under a pile of dead leaves and wished that he’d paid attention to the ant’s advice.

The Talkative Frog

A long time ago in India  there was a young king and a wise man who was the king’s friend. This king was a good man but talked too much. In fact sometimes the wise man could not stop him  talking.

The wise man thought: «I must help the king to be less talkative. But how?» Not far away there was a lake. A frog and two birds lived near the lake and they were all good friends.

One day the bird said to the frog: «We are going to a beautiful mountain tomorrow. Would you like to come with us?»

The frog answered: «How can I go with you? I can’t fly.»

 «We can take you,» the birds said:  «Hold a stick in your mouth, and we’ll carry the stick between us.»

«Thank you. You’re very kind,» said the excited frog.

«Bite on the stick, and don’t talk. If you open your mouth, you’ll fall,» the birds said.

The next day, the king and the wise man saw two birds in the sky. «Look!» said the king, «Those birds are carrying something! What is it?»

The frog heard this and wanted to say: «I am a frog! I’m flying!» He opened his mouth to say it and fell to the ground. «It’s a dead frog!» said the king. «Why did it fall from the sky?»

The wise man answered: «This talkative frog couldn’t hold onto the stick because he couldn’t keep his mouth shut.» «Great king, it  shows us how bad it is to talk too much.» The king said: «I understand you, my friend,» and after that he became a wiser and less talkative king.

The Lion and the Mouse

A lion, who was hunting in the forest, almost stepped on a mouse one morning. «Please, Mister Lion,» squealed the mouse, «Don’t eat me. I can be useful for you».

«You’re right,» said the lion, and he carefully stepped around the tiny creature. Later that same day, the mouse found the lion trapped in a net which had been set by hunters to capture wild animals. With his sharp teeth, the mouse soon gnawed through the tangles in the net and the lion was free. «Thanks a lot, little friend. Now, how can I repay you?»  the lion asked. «Never mind,» the mouse said.

«After all, you let me go free earlier today and one good turn deserves another » .

They were as White as Snow

Believe it or not but many years ago the raven and the owl were both as white as snow. One day they went to the forest. The raven says: «I am tired of being white and what about you?»

«I am tired of being white too.»

«I have a plan,»  says the raven.

«Why don’t we paint each other a different colour?»

«All right,»  answers the owl.

«We can try to do it.»

The raven was pleased.

«Good! Let’s begin. You paint me first and then I’ll paint you,» says the raven.

«Oh, no. It’s your idea. You must begin.»

«Very well,» the raven agreed.

He took some paint and started.

He painted many beautiful grey and black spots on each feather, large and small.

«Oh, how beautiful! I have made you, the owl!» cries he after finishing his work.

The owl was pleased the raven’s work.

«And now let me paint you too.»

But when the owl finished her work she saw that the raven was more beautiful than she was. The owl got angry and poured all painted over the raven and flew away.

«Oh, you are a bad owl,» cried the raven, «I made you nice, you made me blacker than night.» And from that day all ravens are black and they don’t like the owls.
