Специфічна побудова англійських газетних заголовок служить різним цілям: вони повинні примусити читача заінтересуватися заміткою і забезпечити компресію інформації. [1, с.77]
За своєю структурою заголовки англійських газет можуть складатися із одного речення або двох-трьох речень.
Наприклад: Germany closes 4,700 farms in dioxin scare [13, 07.01.11]
Синтаксично заголовки – це дуже коротке речення або фраза за різноманітною структурою:
а) розповідне речення, наприклад: Tourists to Rome hit with new hotel tax [13, 04.01.11];
б) питальні речення: Legal merger set for New Year conclusion? [15, 07.01.11], Do you think it’s right that a McDonald’s in Norwich is open on Christmas Day? [17, 07.01.11];
в) називні речення: Belarus factfile [13, 20.12.10], Winter swimmers[13, 20.12.10];
г) еліптичні речення: Mediator head under fire[13, 06.01.11];
ґ) фрази, що містять дієслівні форми: Taking trauma to the next generation[13, 23.11.10];
д) складні речення: MUM SEES SON DIE AFTER HE IS KNIFED BY GANG OF SCHOOLBOYS [16, 07.11].
Заголовки також можуть вживати пряму мову: David Cameron: Britain on New Year terror alert [13, 31.12.10].
Заголовки англійських газет дуже часто містять різного роду скорочення. Ці скорочення заважають розуміння змісту статті. Найчастіше ці скорочення потім розшифровуються в текстах самої статті. Наведемо приклади, в яких скорочення в заголовках розшифровуються в тексти самої статті:

В заголовках часто використовуються імена власні. Вони можуть бути як відомі читачу, так й не відомі. Наприклад: Bill Clinton is named the animal world's new best friend[12, 02.01.11] Mikhail Khodorkovsky: The latest victim of Vladimir Putin's vendetta politics [14, 27.12.10].

Також як і скорочення власні імена, якщо вони не відомі або менш відомі, пояснюються у тексті статті. Наприклад:
