How bad was snowfall in Boston, Massachusetts last winter? Well, it took until this summer for the last of the snow to melt.

Last winter’s snowfall broke records in Boston. More than 110 inches of snow fell on the city.

Plows cleared the city streets over and over again. They had to bring a lot of the snow to “snow farms.” Those are large public spaces. They include fields and parking lots.

The city’s website noted that Public Works plowed 295,000 miles of roadway last winter. That’s enough miles to make about 12 trips around the Earth. Plows removed more than 40,000 truckloads of snow from city streets.

About 50,000 tons of snow was melted at snow farms. One ton equals 2,000 pounds. But there was just too much snow to melt. Some farms ended up with very big piles of snow.

The biggest pile formed at the Tide Street snow farm. The mountain of snow grew and grew. It reached a height of 75 feet.

The dirty pile didn’t just include snow. It included 80 tons of garbage.

Two winter storms came after people had put their trash out. Snowplows plowed the trash with the snow. As the snow melted, the pile became a stinky, wet trash heap.

The pile lasted so long that Mayor Martin Walsh held a contest. He asked people to guess when the pile would melt. Some people thought it might last until Labor Day. That is in September.

But near-90-degree summer weather put an end to the pile. In mid-July, Walsh finally announced that the pile had melted. The contest winners got to meet the mayor.

Governor Charlie Baker spoke for many when he wrote on Twitter.

Our nightmare is officially over,” he wrote.
