Utah School ‘Texting Lane’ for Walkers

Do you walk around glued to your cellphone? A university in Utah has just the place for you. In one building, it created a special area for texting while walking.

Bright green lines mark lanes on stairs to the gym at Utah Valley University. There are lanes for runners and walkers. And there is a pecial lane for texters. The school wanted to make the space brighter. It also wanted to get students’ attention.

It worked. Someone posted a picture of the lanes online. Soon, people on social media were buzzing about it.

The lanes are only in the gym. But student Tasia Briggs would like to see more of them across campus.

There’s nothing worse than walking behind someone who’s texting. You can’t get around them and go anywhere,” said Briggs.

She added that texting is a big part of how today’s students connect. She likes that the college sees this.

Chelsea Meza is another student at the college. She thinks the lanes show the reality of life today.

8. “it’s kind of funny. You walk down the hallway. Instead of saying ‘Hi,’ everyone is walking and texting,” she said.

The lanes were not created to solve a campus problem. But about half of the students who see the lanes really do use them, Meza said.

College officials got the idea from a text in Washington, D.C. National Geographic Television created texting lanes there.  Then they watched to see what could happen. The lanes attracted attention. But people who were using their phones mostly didn’t notice them.

At Utah Valley University, a group of students and staff came up with the lane idea. They wanted to add more color to a gray staircase in the new Student Life and Wellness Center. Student leaders like the design they chose.

Sam Hadlock was a student designer on the team. He says the design is different. It’s not the red-brick-and-ivy look people expect at colleges. “I think it’s fun, and great to see current design on a university campus,” he added.

2016 Presidential Elections:

Puerto Ricans Could Make a Big Difference in Florida’s Vote

Puerto Rico is in the middle of an economic crisis. Jeffrey Rondon had a hard time finding work there. So the 25-year-old joined the growing number of people who have left the island.

Now he lives in Florida. He has a part-time job in a restaurant.

He also has something else he did not have before the right to voe for president in 2016.

Rondon is just one of thousands of Puerto Ricans who have moved to Florida in the past year. And they are already getting attention from both Republicans and Democrats.

Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory. That means the U.S. government controls it. That makes it different from a state. States share in governing.

Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. But they do not have voting members of Congress. They send delegates or representatives, to the conventions that decide on each party’s choice for president. But they cannot vote in the main election.

Now, Rondon and others who ha e moved to the states have a new right. They can vote in the presidential election. And they eager to use their right.

It’s important to vote and be heard,” Rondon said.

His vote will be a powerful one. That is because Florida is a “swing”state. That means that neither political party has the complete support of its residents. It can “swing” either way in an election.

In a swing state, the final vote is often very close. In 2012, President Obama won the state. But he won by a vote of 50 percent to 49.1 percent.

Many Puerto Ricans coming to Florida are not part of either party. That makes them good targets for the campaigns on both sides.

Jeb Bush is a former governor of Florida. The Republican is running for president. He made a recent trip to Puerto Rico. He speaks Spanish and interests many Hispanic voters.

Hillary Clinton is the top candidate among Democrats. She has visited the island in the past. She was popular with Puerto Ricans when she ran for president in 2008.

Cristobal Alex leads the Latino Victory Project. It is supported by Democrats. He said there will be a special focus on Florida.

I do think Puerto Ricans can change the political landscape,” he said.
