You were asked to prepare a report about the system of education of any English-speaking country.

 − what the age of schooling is;

− what types of schools there are;

− what subjects are taught there;

 − what exams the pupils take

English educational system is different from what we have in our country. There are some state schools and some private ones.

State schools are infant, junior and secondary. British boys and girls begin to go to school at the age of 5. They leave infant schools when they are 7. Then children go to junior schools where they learn to write, read and do mathematics. There school subjects are History, English, Geography, Arithmetic, Arts, Music and some others. Children spend four years studying at junior schools.

Then they pass exams and enter the secondary schools. There are different types of secondary schools in Britain. They are grammar schools, modern schools and comprehensive schools. Almost all secondary pupils go to comprehensive schools. English boys and girls attend secondary schools from 11 till 16. Then they take the General Certificate of Secondary Education exam. After finishing the fifth form pupils can make their choice: they may go to a college or continue their education in the sixth form. Those who stay at school study for 2 more years for Advanced Level Exams in two or three subjects which is necessary to get a place at one of the British universities.

15. You were asked to prepare a report about libraries. Tell:

 − what we need libraries for;

 − whether you visit your school library and why;

 − whether you prefer to use the library or the Internet and why.

Library is a place where the information in print and in other forms is collected and arranged to serve people of all ages and interests. People go to the libraries to read, look, listen and search. Libraries can be found in many places: in small towns and large cities, in schools, universities and colleges.

There is a large library in our school. It has a big collection of old and new books. Schoolchildren get textbooks for free in the library, so they do not have to buy them. Sometimes I visit our library to take books I need at the lessons of Literature.

As for me, I prefer reading the books in the Internet than going to the library. It is more convenient, because you have 24 hour access to the Internet and can find a book you need any time. Besides, libraries don’t work round the clock.

However, our teachers insist on using books from the libraries at the lessons. They say gadgets can be harmful for our eyes.

You met your neighbour and you want to tell him about your last journey. Tell him

 − why travelling has been so popular;

 − what the best means of transport for travelling is (from your point of view);

 −what people like doing while travelling.

People travel for different purposes. Some people travel on business, others travel to visit their relatives, but most people travel to see the world. One can travel by car, by plane, by ship, by train or by coach depending on what one prefers.

Nowadays, a lot of people travel by coach. There are special international bus tours which offer travelling through several countries. However, such tours also have disadvantages. Some people may feel sick; it is also not very comfortable to sleep on a bus seat.

My favourite way of travelling is by car. To my mind, this is one of the most comfortable means of travelling, especially if the destination is not too far. I always enjoy looking through the window while going in a car. One can travel to different towns and cities of your country and even abroad. Last summer we went to the seaside by car. It was fantastic!

Travelling is always nice: it gives you an opportunity to see interesting places and meet new people. I like travelling a lot!

Imagine that you were invited to take part in the conference on healthy lifestyle

. − why lots of people try to keep fit;

 − what you do to keep fit;

 − what sports are popular with your friends.

The polluted and unhealthy world of today makes people realise the importance of healthy lifestyle. Many people do morning exercises, go jogging and train at gyms. In winter they ski, skate and snowboard and in summer they play football, cycle or rollerblade.

Keeping fit doesn’t mean only doing sport, it also deals with the right way of eating. People need all types of vitamins to keep their body healthy and they can be found in fruit and vegetables.

As for me, I do sport regularly. I am an amateur and usually play football with my friends and sometimes jog in the morning. My favourite sport is swimming and I go to the swimming pool twice a week. This helps me feel fit and healthy. When I swim I relax and forget about problems.

A lot of people spend most of their free time watching TV or working at computers. This ruin their eyes and muscles. A lot of teenagers prefer smoking to going in for sport and I think this is wrong. Keeping fit and going in for sport are very important and everyone should do something to stay healthy.

18 You want to organize a party for your friends. Tell them:

 − where the party will take place;

 − what food and drinks will be served;

 − whom you are going to invite;

 − what activities will you organize.

Sometimes we all need a party. It may be a birthday, a wedding, a graduation or just an amicable meeting. No matter what you want to celebrate, you always need to have a plan: invitations, food, music, place and all other things you need to have a perfect party.

 Firstly, you should pick a place. Before you do this, you should think whether you are going to have a big event or little. If you plan to invite a few guests, you can organize a party at home or in a café or a small restaurant.

 Secondly, you should determine a date and time of your party. You should choose the day when all your guests are free. You may also ask them about the most suitable date. After you decide, you may send invitations or inform the guests by the phone.

As for food, I think cakes, sandwiches and food will be suitable for the small party. Such drinks as Coke and fruit juice are also good.

 After that you may consider a theme. Nowadays, theme parties are very popular. Such events are more interesting and give an opportunity to participate in organization for every guest. The guests may buy or make special costumes and masks. It may be any theme you like: retro, marine, Hollywood, Halloween, Christmas and others.

19 You were asked to tell about such kinds of sport as parachuting, bungee jumping, kayaking:

 − whether you consider these kinds of sport interesting/ dangerous

 − what sports you go in for

 − whether you consider going in for sport to be important

 − what piece of advice you would give to those who don’t like going in for sport

Extreme sports have become popular in last 10 years. If you like speed, excitement and danger, you can find all these in such sports as parachuting, bungee jumping or kayaking. As for me, I consider these kinds of sport very interesting. Take bungee jumping. You jump off a bridge and you fall and fall, and then, just before you hit the ground or water, an elastic rope pulls you back. If I ever have a chance to jump, I will do it without a doubt.

To tell the truth, I don't do sports regularly and it is not an essential part of my daily life. In the morning I do some exercises just to awake. In summer I go swimming as there is a beautiful lake with pure water where my Granny lives. In winter I sometimes swim in the swimming pool.

However, a lot of people are not fit nowadays. It's a big problem today. If you want to feel fit you'd better go in for one kind of sport or another. I think that everyone must do all he can to be healthy. Good health is better than the best medicine. All kinds of physical exercises are very useful to make our bodies strong and to keep ourselves fit and healthy.

21 Imagine your friend came to see you. Tell him:

 − what the house looks like;

 − what your favourite room is and what is in it;

 − where in the world your house would be located.

We have a nice flat in a block of flats. Our flat is on the fourth floor. It has all modern conveniences: central heating, gas, electricity, cold and hot water. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall in our flat. The living-room is the largest and most comfortable room in the flat.

The bedroom is smaller than the living-room and not so light as there is only one window in it.

The third room is my study. It is not large but very cosy. There isn't much furniture in it, only the most necessary. It has a writing-table and an armchair before it. In the right-hand corner there is a bookcase full of books, magazines and newspapers. A small table with a computer is standing in the left-hand corner. Near it there is a sofa with some cushions. In my opinion, the study is the best room in our flat.

But the warmest place in our flat is the kitchen — the place where the whole family gathers every evening not only to have supper together, but also to speak and rest. I like the English proverb: "My home is my castle" because my flat is, indeed, my castle.

22 You were asked to make a report about school uniform. Tell your friends:

 − whether you wear school uniform in school or not;

 − what the advantages and disadvantages of wearing school uniform are;

 − what design you school uniform will be.

Many students all over the world wear a school uniform. But is it really necessary? Some people say that wearing school uniform is good, but others do not support this point of view.

As for me, I do not like wearing a school uniform. Firstly, the uniform is bad because of its monotony. It looks as if you are in the army, where everybody is similar to each other. Secondly, the colours of the modern school uniform are black and white. It is awful. Thirdly, I support a free style. Everyone can express himself. You can wear comfortable favourite clothes. My favourite colours are bright yellow, green, and blue.
    But there is another point of view. Some people say that students should wear a school uniform, and it disciplines. They think that wearing a school uniform helps students not to annoy each other. Without special uniform students, especially girls, will try to wear the best, the lightest, and the strangest clothes which are not allowed at school. And, of course, students can better concentrate on work if they wear uniform.

If I were a designer, I would make a uniform in bright colours and casual style, for example a T-shirt and jeans. I think it would be very comfortable and everybody would love it.
   In conclusion, I would like to stress that I am for a free style. Clothes express our feelings. Tastes differ. And everyone can have his own opinion.

23 Tell what you like to do in your free time:

 − whether you spend more time outdoors or indoors;

 − whether you prefer to have a rest with your friends or alone;

 − whether it is necessary to have free time

Every person needs some free time. Most schoolchildren and employees usually rest at weekend. This is the best time for relaxing and doing what you like. Evenings of weekdays also offer some free time.

When I get back from school, I eat something quick and do my homework. After that I’m free to meet up with friends, to play computer games or to draw, which is my hobby. Sometimes, I play volleyball or other active games with my friends at the school playground. In summertime I also like playing ping-pong and I’m rather good at it.

Weekends are a bit different. My parents usually give me some pocket money each week. I try to spend them reasonably. During the week I pay for lunch at the school canteen. Sometimes I need to buy some stationery. At weekends I go out with my friends. Sometimes we go to the cinema, sometimes to the pizza place. However, my favourite pastime at weekends is bowling. I like this game. I think it is not only entertaining but also social. Bowling unites like-minded people and gives a chance to communicate with good friends, instead of sitting in front of the computer. I understand that real life communication is much better.

Apart from seeing friends, I spend my free time with my family members and relatives, especially on special occasions. On birthdays, anniversaries, public holidays we have family gatherings at my grandma’s place.

24 Tell how important and necessary friendship is for you:

 − describe your friend’s appearance and his/her character;

 − whether people can be happy without friends;

 − whether it is important to be a friend to others.

Lucky are those people who have friends. I'm happy to have lots of friends, too. Some of them are very close, some are less. But all of them make my life interesting and enjoyable. My best friend is …. He is rather tall and slim with fair hair and blue eyes. He is really friendly, helpful and kind.

The most important feeling that exists between friends is trust. Respect and tolerance are also very important; it means that you don't criticize your friend's way of living, but try to understand him, discuss problems with him and explain to him what you think is good and what is bad. A friend is a person who can help you any time, who is eager to do everything for you waiting nothing in return, who supports you in all your beginnings and who will never betray you.

I appreciate friendship. It makes happiness grow brighter and grief less painful, because we have friends to share it with. And we trust our friends and we are grateful to them. Friendship is a bridge between the loneliness and the fellowship. That's why a true friend is a priceless gift. They are rich who have true friends, says a proverb and I agree.

25 Your friend phones you to congratulate on your birthday though it is late. You had a party on this occasion. Tell him/her:

− how many guests came to you, who they were and where the party took place;

 − who helped you to prepare for the party;

 − what you were presented.

Some days ago I celebrated my birthday. I always wait for it with great pleasure. It's a pity that birthdays come only once a year. I always wait for it .

My parents organized a lovely birthday party for me. I usually invite only my best friends and relatives for my birthday party. My mother baked a large tasty cake and put 15 candleson it, one for each year. There were many presents on the table. When I saw them I cut the strings as fast as I could. I wanted to know what was inside the parcels. It was so exciting to observe all presents. On my birthday I got a lovely picture from my brother, two interesting books from my aunt and uncle. A new mobile phone with love and good wishes were from my parents, and an enormous box of chocolates was from my friend. They all wished me many happy returns of the day. Besides, there were many birthday cards which I had got before. My grandmother congratulated me with a beautiful bunch of roses that she had cut specially for my birthday. We spent a wonderful time together. We danced, sang songs, listened to popular music, played different games.
I liked my birthday party greatly.
