Your friend has come to see you and you are discussing the role of mass media in people’s life.

You were asked to prepare a report about the most important inventions of the 20th century. Tell your friends: − what invention you consider the most important;  − what devices you often use and what for; − why it is difficult for people to do without computers and mobile phones. For centuries people have been inventing things to make life easier. Among the greatest inventions of the past are the automobile, the steam engine, the electricity, the telephone and the television. Since the beginning of the 20th century people have made a huge step in technology. Today we live in the world of machines and computers. Every day more and more gadgets appear and all of them make our life easier. Some of the new inventions have become so affordable and common, that people cannot imagine life without them. For example, the mobile phone has turned from an expensive portable phone into an inexpensive data, e-mail and voice service that almost anyone can afford. Today’s mobiles fit in a pocket and can replace a computer. Another great invention is a tablet PC. It is much lighter than notebooks and contains all the software that is need for business, studies and pleasure. EBook readers are a new invention too. This is a very convenient gadget that allows uploading books in different electronic formats. Surely, these new inventions are not the last ones that humanity has developed and many others will be developed year upon year. 2 A new pupil who is interested in music has come to your class. Tell him:  − whether music is an art;  − what music style you prefer ;  − who your favourite singer or group is; why.   Music plays a significant role in our lives. We hear it everywhere: in streets, in shops, in cafes and at home. Music follows us from childhood and we can’t live without it. We listen to music when we are happy or sad, we dance to it and we learn to play music too. Music is not just a combination of sounds, it is a real art. There are a lot of different genres of music that people enjoy: classical music, jazz, popular music or pop music, rock and club music. Music reflects our life, our emotions and feelings. As for me, I prefer European pop music. I have no favourite music style, I can listen to various kinds of music and the choice depends on my mood. My favourite singer is Sting. He is a well-known British rock-musician. I like his songs for the tune and specific spirit. All of them are saturated with philosophy, lyrism and some emotional stress. My favourite songs are “Shape of my heart” and “Rise and fall”. He is known to gain his nominations for Grammy more than once. I think, it’s a good reason for love and respect.

Imagine that you are taking part in the international conference on the topic “The role of the Internet in people’s life”. Tell

− why Internet activities are so popular;

 − how the Internet can help students in their studies;

 − whether the Internet can be dangerous; why

The Internet is the newest kind of mass media, but it has become the most popular and greayest source of information and entertainment. If you have the internet access, you may read newspapers online, watch films, listen to music and even watch television online!

I use the Internet every day for various purposes: I chat with my friends all over the world, read news and surf the net to find necessary information for my studies. E-mail has become the greatest way of communication. One can send a letter to his friends without the need of buying an envelope, and his letter will be delivered in a few seconds. I also like social media sites, like VKontakte and Odnoclassniki.

Surely, there are advantages and disadvantages of using the Internet. Some of the advantages are education and entertainment. However, one needs to have special equipment to surf the Net and buying all of these may be hard if one doesn’t have enough money. Another disadvantage is that sometimes the information which is provided is unreliable and may even be harmful to people.

Imagine you are preparing for taking part in the conference on the language policy. Tell

 − why the English language is becoming so important;

 − how many languages you would like to learn; what they would be;

 − what problems people face while learning the languages.

Learning a foreign language is not an easy matter. It is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and effort. There are numerous languages in the world. Some of them are not widespread; others have become international languages for communication, like English and German.

The English language is the official language of some international organizations like the Olympic Committee, the United Nations and many others. This is also the universal language of computing. English is also the native language of many countries like Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and others. Moreover, many languages borrow English words and phrases and people use them in their everyday speech.

I study English and German (French) at school and understand that this is a great opportunity for me. I am trying to improve my knowledge by watching films in the original.

Learning a foreign language is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and effort. You have to memorize a lot of words and rules, work with the dictionaries constantly, but it worth doing. Learning a foreign language or a few languages will help you find a good job. All in all, it is a very important process and I am glad people realize it and start learning languages.

5 A new pupil who is fond of reading has come to your class. Tell him:

 − about the role of books in people’s life;

 − what books you prefer;

 − what your favourite book is

Child psychologists believe that reading is one of the best habits that should be encouraged in children. Ninety percent of the things we learn during our lifetime come through books. There are two large groups of books; fiction and non-fiction books. Fiction books are most popular with readers and include short stories and novels of different genres and poetry. Non-fiction books are dictionaries, encyclopedias, reference books, historical and others.

In my childhood, my mother read different books to me and that helped me love reading. I was fond of detective stories and comics. Now I read historical novels and I realise that I don’t know many things from history and I want to learn something new. My favourite book is “Ivanhoe” by Walter Scott. During my studies I also use non-fiction books like dictionaries and encyclopedias to find necessary information.

Nowadays modern technologies also made possible for us using electronic readers instead of paper copies of books. Such readers are very convenient as you don’t have to carry a thick book in your bag^ you just take the reader and upload text files into it, so instead of several books you just carry one light electronic device!

6 You were asked to prepare a report about cinema as an art. Tell:

 − why cinema is an art;

− what kinds of films exist nowadays;

 − what your favourite film is

Cinema is one of the wonders of modern world. In 1895 the Lumiere brothers gave the world’s first real cinema show in Paris. The first film they showed was “The Arrival of a train at a Station” Cinema is really an art of our time. Everyone can find something he likes in the broad variety of its genres. For example: horror films, thriller films, popular science fiction, mystery films, documentaries and animated cartoons. Besides films may be colour or black-and-white, full-length or short, sound or silent.

My favourite movie is “Titanic”. It tells the story of a famous ship, the “Titanic”, which sank in 1912. The “Titanic” was a colossal ship even by modern standards. Its tragic sinking will always be remembered, for the ship went down on the first voyage with heavy losses.

The director of the film is James Cameron. The main parts in the film are played by young actors Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet. To my mind their acting is superb. The camerawork is fantastic, too. I think that the camerawork makes this movie so special. I’ve heard that they made a full-size model of the “Titanic” for this film. I would advise all my friends to watch this film.

7 You met your friend and would like to discuss your last shopping experience. Tell:

 − what types of shops exist nowadays;

 − what a shopping list for a typical family should include;

 − what shopping experience you've got .

Shopping usually means going to some place to buy something. It is a part of our life and we have to accept it whether we like it or not. There are a lot of different shops in our town, both expensive and cheap and everyone has a choice where to go. I prefer going to a big shopping centre not far from my house where there are a lot of shops and a supermarket. There are clothes shops, shoe shops, a florist’s, a jeweler’s and many others.

My family usually does the shopping at weekends. On Sundays we go to the supermarket and buy food for the whole week. My mother usually makes a shopping list. It includes meat, fish, cereal, milk, eggs, butter, fruit and vegetables. I don’t like supermarkets, because there are crowds of people there.

When I need to buy clothes or books I do the shopping alone. My favourite clothes shop is just in the centre of the town. I can spend hours inside looking through new jeans and jumpers. I also like shopping when I need to buy presents for my family and friends.

I think, shopping sometimes can be boring and time-consuming. However, we have to go shopping because we need food and other things that are necessary for our life.

8 Tell your friend about the role of mobile phones in modern society:

 − whether you use a mobile phone;

 − what the advantages of using mobile phones are;

 − what the disadvantages of using mobile phones are.

As for me, I believe that mobile phone is the most amazing wonder of our world. First of all, they allow us to get in touch with our parents and friends despite the distances. Furthermore, we can use them for education and fun. Like every teenager, I have got a mobile phone. I mostly use it to make calls to my parents and friends. Using the phones has some advantages and disadvantages.

First of all, they enable users to entertain such as surfing the Net, taking and sending photos or downloading videos and games. Furthermore, some office applications for mobile phones help people do their business more effectively.

On the other hand, using the phones to much will probably be harmful for human’s health as it can increase the risk of cancer. In addition, children spend a lot of their time on using mobiles in the purpose of chatting or playing games. This affects negatively on their studies.

In general, mobiles have both pros and cons to our life.

9 Imagine that you are taking part in the International conference on environmental problems. Inform the participants about:

 − the global problems the world faces nowadays;

 − how other countries cope with these problems;

 − your own ways of improving the ecological situation.

People have lived on the Earth for centuries and global problems have always existed. Today, they can be divided into two categories: ecological and social problems.

The first category includes issues relating to ecological destruction, pollution and global warming as a result. The second category deals with social, economic and political issues. They include global terrorism, poverty, human rights, racism and many others.

We are faced with the problem of global terrorism and more and more countries are suffering from it. It is difficult to catch terrorists and prevent their acts. The most terrible terrorist attack took place on September 11, 2001 in the USA. The World Trade Centre was destroyed completely and thousands of people were killed. The world was shocked and most countries decided to fight against terrorism. However, new attacks have been committed. Many innocent people still get killed and nobody can stop terrorists.

As for ecological problems, they are becoming more and more important today. How can these problems be solved? First of all, people should try to use alternative sources of energy, such as solar, water and wind energy. Another way is to encourage tree planting. Every day we throw away a lot of litter, which can be used again, for example paper, glass, plastic. We must recycle such things at factories, and then we will reduce the amount of rubbish on our planet. We must not ignore the problems of environmental pollution and we have to do everything possible to stop or reduce it.

10 A new boy from another city has come to your class. Tell him about your school:

 − when your school was founded;

 − what the most distinctive features of your school are;

 − what classrooms and facilities the school has.

Our school is the largest in the town. It was founded in 1981, so the building is rather modern. Actually, our school consists of three buildings with a lot of facilities. The best one is a sports complex. There are our two gyms, a dancing room, our assembly hall, a school museum, a library and a school canteen there.

Our gym is well-equipped. There is new sports equipment to meet all pupils’ needs. School sports competitions usually take place in our gym.

The school library has a big collection of old and new books. Schoolchildren get textbooks for free in the library, so they do not have to buy them.

The first floor of the main building is mostly used for administrative purposes, but there are a few large classrooms including two computer labs.

From the second floor and up there are different classrooms. Each classroom is devoted to a particular subject. One can find the classrooms of Russian, English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and others. All of them have modern educational equipment necessary for interesting lessons. The internet access in the computer lab is available for all schoolchildren.

I am really glad that I am one of the students of this school and I am sure I will always remember my school years.

Your friend has come to see you and you are discussing the role of mass media in people’s life.

 − what kinds of Mass Media you know and what kind you use in your life;

 − which your favourite TV programmes;

 − what newspapers and magazines you read;

 − whether we can trust all the information we get from Mass Media.

Modern world is full of information of various kinds which is even more valuable than money. Mass media consist of the press, radio, television and Internet. They serve to inform people of different events that take place, educate, entertain and give us any kinds of information.

The press still remains one of the most powerful kinds of mass media. One can find daily, weekly and monthly newspapers and magazines on different topics. Most of women prefer fashion magazines like Vogue or Cosmopolitan, when men prefer sports newspapers and magazines. However, I don’t read them since I prefer getting news from the Internet.

Television provides a great opportunity for people to learn latest news, watch educational programmes and films on TV. As for me, I usually watch wildlife documentaries and game shows on TV. I think that it is impossible to live without television, even though the Internet, I am sure, will replace it one day in future.

Surely, we shouldn’t trust all the information we get from mass media, especially from the Internet. Sometimes it is unreliable and may even be harmful to people.

Imagine you are participating in the Summer language camp activities. The people from different countries are among you. Tell them about the history of your city/town, the main historical landmarks and the places worth visiting in your city/town.

Lugansk is the capital of Lugansk People’s Republic. It is situated on the banks of the Lugan and the Olkhovaya rivers. The city is a large industrial centre. It is called the cradle of southern metallurgy.

Such branchesof industry as machine building, locomotive building, coalmining, light and food are well-developed there.

The place, where Lugansk is situated now, was inhabited in the first half of the 17th century. In the 17th—18th centuries that territory was owned by the Don Cossacks Army. Lugansk as a town was founded in 1795.

There are five universities in our town where a lot of students get education. There are also three theatres — the Russian Music and Drama Theatre, the Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre and the Puppet Theatre in Lugansk. Besides them there is the Philharmonics Society, a circus and different museums in it. The most famous of them is the museum of V. I. Dahl. It is worth visiting because Lugansk is the birthplace of Dahl. Also, you can find a lot of monuments devoted to famous people, for example K.Voroshilov, Matusovskiy and others. There are also places, which remind us about three wars and the defenders of Lugansk: the Square of the Heroes of the Great Patriotic War, Ostraya Mogila and many others.

I like my town very much. Nowadays it is a modern town with new districts, wide streets, beautiful churches and marvelous parks.

13 You were asked to write an essay about a famous writer from the English-speaking country. Talk about:

 − The most interesting periods of his life;

 − Inform about the place of this writer in the world literature.

− Give short information about his most famous works.

Joanne Rowling is one of the most famous English writers in the world. Her Harry Potter series has been translated into many languages.

Joanne Kathleen Rowling was born in 1965 in Bristol, England. In her childhood she dreamt of becoming a writer. At the age of six Joanne wrote her first book about a rabbit. After graduating from the university, she worked as a secretary and then went to Portugal to teach English. Then she returned to Britain and settled in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The idea of a book about a young magician occurred to her in 1990, when she was going by train from Manchester to London. She quickly invented the main plot and in 1997 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was published. It became an immediate success and was published in eight countries. There are seven Harry Potter books, films based on the novels and a lot of goods with the Harry Potter trademark.
