What do daily mass media carry to us?

Mass Media in our life

Everywhere, every day, exciting things are happening. Each day is filled with news. People learn news and views during reading newspapers and magazines, talking over the telephone or they are kept informed by watching TV or listening to the radio. The press, the radio and television play a big role in the life of the society. They inform, educate and entertain people. They also influence the way people look at the world and make them change their views. Mass media plays a very important role in organizing public opinion. Millions of people watch TV and read newspapers in their free time. Most of people can’t do without a newspaper in the underground or during the lunch break. TV also dominates the life of the family most of the time. It is also a habit which impossible to resist. The radio is turned on most of the time, creating a permanent background noise. So Mass Media become a very important part of our life. Mass media denotes a section of the media specifically designed to reach a large audience. The term was coined in the 1920s with the advent of nationwide radio networks, mass-circulation newspapers and magazines. However, some forms of mass media such as books and manuscripts had already been in use for centuries.

Mass media can be used for various purposes: advocacy, both for business and social concerns. This can include advertising, marketing, propaganda, public relations, and political communication. Entertainment, traditionally through performances of acting, music, and sports, along with light reading. Since the late 20th century also through video and computer games. Journalism is the discipline of collecting, analyzing, verifying and presenting information regarding current events, trends, issues and people. Those who practice journalism are known as journalists. Electronic media and print media include: Broadcasting, in the narrow sense, for radio and television. Many instances of various types of recorded discs or tapes. In the 20th century, these were mainly used for music. Video and computer uses followed. Film, most often used for entertainment, but also for documentaries.

The Internet, which has many uses and presents both opportunities and challenges. Examples can include Blogs and podcasts (such as news, music, pre-recorded speech, and video) Mobile phones, which can be used for rapid breaking news and short clips of entertainment like jokes, horoscopes, alerts, games, music, and advertising. Publishing, including electronic publishing Video games, which have developed into a mass form of media since cutting-edge devices such as the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii broadened their use. Millions of copies of newspapers appear every day. Many people subscribe to two or more newspapers; others buy newspapers at the newsstands. Most newspapers contain news, detailed articles on home and international affairs, reviews of books, art and TV shows. Many of them also cover sports events. In the USA daily newspapers are published in 34 different languages. The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don't have to wait for news time on TV.

TV is one of the best inventions the man ever made. We are really beginning to forget what the world was without TV. Everybody knows what a great force is TV in the world today. We become better informed by watching documentaries, science programs, discussions and political issues of the day. TV gives us opportunities to see the best actors, sport matches, to meet famous people. TV brings the world to our room. TV helps us to relax after a hard days work. Besides there is a considerable amount of TV programs (News, current affairs viewpoint. Musical Reviews, Sports Review, Travelers Clubs, Good Night Kids. etc) and they gather big audience. They provide useful topics for conversation, wise heated discussions. Current Affairs (Viewpoint, News) These programs deal with political and social problems of modern society. Their aim is to give an analyze of the problems and to show different viewpoints. They are concerned with the counties national events. They show meetings with famous political analysts, discussing the most topical political problems of today. To my mind we can’t imagine our lives without mass media. It is silly to avoid it as we can use its advantages.Though we should be careful and filter all information we get.

4.Seven reasons for using radioGreat reasons for you to make radio your medium of choice1. Radio offers efficient targeting

Radio targets audiences efficiently because different stations attract different listeners – Kerrang listeners are worlds apart from Classic FM listeners etc. This allows advertisers to talk selectively to the groups they are most interested in. Added to this is radio’s regional/local structure, which means that brands can focus their activity very effectively onto key market areas.Find out more about stations2. Radio reaches people at relevant times and places

Most radio listeners are engaged in another activity, and this means that advertisers can reach listeners at key “touchpoints” – when they are on the school run, surfing the internet, before going out on Friday nights, and so on. And now that radio can be heard on mobiles, on the internet etc, these touchpoints are becoming even more widespread. Research shows that advertising which is relevant to a listener’s other activity is over 60% more likely to be recalled.3. Radio reaches out in an ad avoidance worldResearch shows that radio, together with cinema, has the lowest level of advertising avoidance – people rarely switch stations, and are available to listen to any message that is relevant, creative, intriguing etc. This is a great opportunity for advertising who want to reach out to new customers, or to tell existing customers something they didn’t know.4. Radio has a “multiplier effect” on other mediaRadio’s way of multiplying the effect of other media is a feature of multi-media research studies. The original Millward Brown Awareness Multiplier Study showed how radio multiplies the effect of TV, and since then the finding has been re-echoed in the joint OAA/RAB study into radio & outdoor, and also the US RAEL study into radio vs print. Radio’s multiplier effect seems to originate in the fact that it is an audio-only medium, and therefore stimulates a different part of the brain.5. Radio creates a large “share of mind” for a brandIn the same that radio stations create chart music success, they create a sense of ubiquity for a brand. This is for two main reasons – firstly, because radio ads are on frequently, and secondly because listeners tend to spend so long listening (on average 14 hours per week). A brand which is big in radio can create a disproportionately large share of mind for itself.6. Radio drives response, especially onlineRadio has always been a strong “call-to-action” medium, and this is even more true in a world where consumers access brands via the internet. Recent IAB/RAB joint research revealed that at any given time a fifth of internet surfers are listening to radio – so they are a click away from interacting with a brand.7. Radio is “a friend”Listeners use radio for emotional reasons – to keep their spirits up, to stop themselves from feeling bored in a car or isolated while doing daily chores. This leads to them seeing radio as a kind of friend, and this is a valuable context for an advertiser to appear in. It is even more powerful when advertising extends through into branded content – sponsorships & promotions. When a radio station presenter talks about “our friends at Company X”, the listener is hearing about a friend of a friend – this has a strong effect on bringing a brand closer.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Newspaper?Though they were once the dominant means of communicating world events, newspapers have declined in readership since the rise of TV and the Internet. There are some benefits to newspapers—newspapers are markedly less expensive than a television (which also often requires a cable service subscription) or the computer and Internet service necessary to access the Web. In contrast to some Internet resources, most newspaper articles have been well-researched, written with reliable sources and edited for accuracy. In general, newspapers are also more widely available—most convenience stores carry several papers, and local papers are easily found in vending machines on any city block. Some larger metropolitan areas even have free regional weekly publications, with more opinion-based articles and lists of local events. There are some drawbacks to newspapers as well. With newspapers, it's impossible to communicate events in real-time. Since newspapers must go through the process of producing content, printing, and distributing the finished paper, articles that were written the night before may be out of date by the time they reach your front porch. Newspapers can also be biased, depending on what kind of corporation or group they are owned by. The process of producing newspapers could also be considered a waste of paper and energy resources. As with any form of media, there are benefits and drawbacks to using papers to get your news. Some people prefer the immediacy of the Internet and are willing to accept the possibility that their information may be inaccurate. There are plenty of people who enjoy the experience of starting each day with breakfast and a newspaper, catching up on the events of the week.

6. What is the difference between a newspaper and a magazine?Newspapers and magazines are two important forms of print media that are read by millions of people around the world, to get information and entertainment. People are so used to newspapers and magazines that they hardly pay any attention to differences between them. This article tries to differentiate between these two types of print media on the basis of their features.

NewspaperThough the spread of the internet and electronic media like TV and cable has put some breaks on the circulation and numbers of newspapers, they still remain the primary source of authentic, reliable and fresh content about what is happening around the world and locally. The advent of the printing press gave wings to the spread of newspapers and in every part of the world there are national newspapers as well as newspapers in local dialects. Most of the newspapers are daily in nature, but some happen to be weekly and even biweekly. Newspapers traditionally use inferior quality of paper and poor quality ink as the emphasis is on keeping the prices down. As newspapers are distributed early in the morning, people wait for them to get all the information about their city, nation, and international news along with their morning cup of tea or coffee.

Magazine Magazines are another form of print media, and they are produced on paper with ink. They are not published daily and are rather published weekly or monthly. These magazines are not sources of fresh content to the extent of publishing breaking news but contain content that is recent in nature. Magazines belong to various fields such as entertainment, science, share markets, sports, movies, and so on. They are expensive as they are published on costly paper that may be glossy and also contain color photos of high resolution.

What is the difference between Newspaper and Magazine ? • Magazine is smaller in size to newspaper. • Magazine is more expensive than newspaper. • Newspaper contains fresher content than magazine. • Newspaper has more variety of content than magazine that pertains to its chosen field only such as cars, movies, sports, and so on. • People subscribe for magazines though they are also available on news stands. • Newspapers are delivered by hawkers though many purchase them at crossings and newsstands. • Readership of a newspaper is invariably higher than that of a magazine though there are exceptions. • Newspapers never fall short of content as there is always something happening in different parts of the world, whereas magazine content is always based upon the liking of the readers. • A magazine is like a book while a newspaper is much larger in size though there is lesser number of pages than in a magazine. • As far as appearance is concerned, magazines look far more attractive than newspapers. • Newspapers are more versatile in content than magazines, and they have various sections to suit the interests of people of diverse backgrounds.

7.Why do mass media play a very important role in our everyday life?To live in the modern world is impossible without expanding your knowledge in all spheres. There are several ways of communicating the world to individuals — mass media, books, travelling, museums, meeting eminent people. Of all the existing ways, there are two which are the easiest ones, that is mass media and travelling. One more reason why I prefer them is that they provide the fullest and the most reliable information in the fields you are interested in. (For travelling, see 'Travelling'.)Mass media play an important role in our life. How and why do they shape public opinion ? Mass media play an important role in our life. They are usually defined by encyclopedias as any of the means of communication, such as radio, television, newspapers, magazines, etc. that reach and influence a very large audience, at least as large as the whole population of a nation. The term was coined in 1920s with emerging of nationwide radio networks and of mass-circulation newspapers and magazines. I believe mass media are so influential because they can be used for various purposes: popularisation, for business or social concerns (advertising, marketing, public relations, and political communication), education, entertainment, video and computer games, journalism, public service announcements. Media include radio and television, films, various types of discs or tapes used for music and computer, Internet, publishing on paper (books, magazines, and newspapers).Mass media play a crucial role in forming public opinion. They do it in a number of ways: first, they communicate the world to individuals. Much of the news media is made up of newsgathering by large organizations. Just four main news agencies — AP, UPI, Reuters and Agence France Presse — claim together to provide 90 % of the total news output of the world's press, radio and television. Second, they reproduce modern society's self-image by forcing attention to certain issues. They build up public images of political figures. They are constantly presenting objects suggesting what individuals in the mass should think about, know about, have feelings about. Because some of the media produce material which often is good, impartial, and serious, they have respect and authority. If we look into the reasons why the mass media shape public opinion, we will see, first of all, that in practice the ethics of the press and television provides a vital support for the existing order. Second, many of the mass media in practice cater for the tastes of some social group. Shaping the public opinion inside this group, they create the audience which supports them financially by buying the newspaper or watching the TV channel. But how much do the media influence the modern society? Early critiques suggested that the media destroys the individual's capacity to act autonomously. Later studies, however, suggest a more complex interaction between the media and society. People actively interprete and evaluate the media and the information it provides.

9.What TV programs do you like to watch?Nowadays, TV is a popular entertainment tool which is favored by all people around the world. With a television connected to some channels such as K+, VTC, MTV, we can easily access available programs that surely matches our own hobbies. In terms of my interests, I concern about life of wild animals, and like the beauty of nature in remote places, as well as want to improve my English skills by listening to records spoken in English; therefore, “Discovery” seems to be the most favorite TV program to me. In the first place, usually watching “Discovery” will help us to have wide knowledge about wild nature in all over the place because this television program centers on the life of a variety of wild animals ranging from lions in Africa, polar bears in Antarctic to bats living in large caves in South Asian. Moreover, most of scenes in documentary films in “Discovery” are produced with the maximum supports from modern devices, so audience can have general but clear views about what is going on in today’s life of animals, accomplished with their habitat. For example, in a current program, I watched a film about the bald eagle in United States and know valuable information relating its development. In 1782, it is estimated that there were as many as 75000 nesting pairs in North American. By the early 1960s, however, the numbers of nesting pairs had been reduced to only around 450. It is due to the abusing pesticide in farming. I had never thought that pesticide could do harm on the eagle until I watched that film. Therefore, in this case, Discover is really a helpful source to provide the audience with knowledge about what humans should or should not do to the wild animal world.Besides, “Discovery” deserves to be one of the best TV program for people to improve their English skills, especially listening skills. English in “Discovery” is spoken with a moderate speech, so it is easy to follow the current of the program. Moreover, two additional factors make me think that this program is suitable for people with all of levels of English master is that, first, noise caused by activities of animals in the films does not disturb a lot their dialogue, and second, the dialogue is attached to images and scenes. These help audience with high level of using English can understand the content of films without focusing on watching the TV screen, and help people at the beginning period of studying English to be familiar with the English sounds. In conclusion, watching TV for rest or for updating knowledge and helping positively our study is a good habit and content of today’s TV programs tends to be close this demand. Among such TV programs, “Discovery” is the one I like very much. Hopefully, you watch this program one time and have same experience like mine.
