What exact is whole life insurance, and how do life insurance companies profit from selling it?

Basically insurance only works when a large groups of people own that particular insurance. Everyone pays to protect their income, but not everyone is going to use their insurance. So that's how basically insurance companies stay in business, unless something extraordinary has happen in this country where there's lots of people are filing for claims and the insurance company can't pay them all (such as the Hurricane Katrina event). What is whole life insurance? 1) Its a level term insurance to a specified age (usually to age 95, 98 or 100) plus cash value. 2) It is very expensive when compared to term insurance 3) Cash value grows at a very low rate of return. In the first 10 years, you see a negative return on your money. But long term average is anywhere between 1-4%, depending on the company. 4) If you want to take money out, you have to borrow it and pay loan interest of 5-8%. 5) If you die someday, the insurance company pay the face amount of the policy (minus loans and missed premiums) to the beneficiary, but they keep all the cash value. 6) If you do get to live by the end of policy date (when you around age 100), the insurance company pay you the cash value, but you lose the insurance. There's only one reason why that agent is trying to sell you whole life insurance: MONEY!
Next thing you'll know, that agent would try to sell you universal life insurance, a product that is more horrible than whole life, but it pays out more commissions.

What social metrics will help you to buy your desirable product?

You know social media is very important in today’s world. You, or an entire team in your organization, have been investing your time and effort to make sure you’re regularly posting and sharing great content, following relevant people, tweeting and retweeting, pinning, liking, writing thoughtful blog posts and sharing your knowledge. On top of that, all of the constant changes on the various social platforms and new marketing tactics that you must learn to employ keep you incredibly busy. It’s easy to lose sight of why you’re doing it, and if it’s making a difference.

It’s very often the case that your social media activities are not closely tied to the larger purpose, vision, and overall goals and objectives of the organization. If we dive into social media without clear goals, we might not be prepared for that boss’s question.

Do social workers make good money?

I love to help people but I also want to make money to make a living. Im currently looking into social work or psychology. I am in the air force so i was thinking of pursuing in in that field or a government setting like the veterans affair

Generally social workers don't make awesome money, but you can certainly earn a livable wage depending on the cost of living where you are. There is potential to make good money in private practice, but there are downfalls with that too (chasing people for payment, etc.). Chances are you will make more money in a government position, but that might also mean there is a higher stress level. For example in Canada, child protection social workers can make very good money, however the work can be quite risky and is highly stressful (arguably one of the most stressful social work jobs).

What can I do with my bachelors of social work?

Depends on what state you are living in. for example I am in NY, a BS in social work will get you a job, however it can be difficult because many require a MSW. With a MSW it will be very easy to get a job but like others say it can be a small paycheck. But don't let people mislead you it is not that small of a paycheck, it depends on what population you choose to work with. It also depends on luck to be honest.
Here is an example. I just finished my BSW in 2007. I have a friend who got hired from her internship after we graduated. She is working in a center for the elderly holding group sessions, and I think she does some case management by setting them up with services such as therepy, and other public assistances. In our last conversation she said she was making 28k a year.
Now me, I also got hired from my internship straight out of college. I actually was offered my old supervisors position. A position that normally requires a MSW, but like I said it's all luck. I work in a diagnostic group home of teenage boys and I pretty much run most aspects of their lives. I started at 35k and 6 months later I started making 45k. I think thats a pretty respectable paycheck, especially for only having my BS and there is still plenty of room for me to move up in my agency and the pay scale. Truth is, keep looking around and don't settle for a low paycheck! MSW can start at 45k at the right place. Yes nurses make more, but if your heart isn't in it, it won't matter what you are being paid!

41. The first sound film appeared in 1927.The Lumiere brothers made their first film in 1895. This film was demonstrated in one famous cafe in Paris. The first films were silent and short, but they were popular among people. The USA was the leader in the production of films. The first sound film appeared in 1927. Soon coloured films appeared. Cinematography has a long history in our country too. Pioneers of the Russian cinema were Protozanov, Gardin, later Pudovkin and Dovzhenko. At that time films were silent and black-and-white. Later films became sound and colourful. Some years ago it was popular to go to the cinemas in Moscow. It was difficult to buy a ticket for a good film and we had to stand in a queue for hours. But now we prefer to stay at home and watch TV and video films. In England the cinema is usually called "the pictures". The prices of cinema seats in London are high. In the past cinemas were more popular than they are now. It is interesting that in some towns in Britain the cinemas are closed on Sundays. I like to see documentary films best of all. Some of them are rather interesting, because they tell us the truth about the history of our country. I like to see films about school life. As I study at school, such films are connected with me. It is interesting to see films bout school life in England, France, Spain and in the USA. It is interesting to know about foreign education and to see their schools. My favourite Russian film is "Moscow doesn't believe in tears". It is the true story about the girl. She leaves her village for Moscow. This film tells us about her difficulties, about her wish to live in the capital, about her friends. I am sure that it is a kind and a clever film

.32. Is the Zionist mass media stampede designed to drown out individual critical thinking with mass agreement?Zionist control over the mass media is killing objectivity in the news. It’s not just the Jewish Zionists but also the Christian Zionists (FOX news) who share the same biased viewpoints on everything. The universal demonization of Muslims across the globe is being fuelled by the hate spewing from Zionist controlled mass media.

Whenever questions like this are raised some Zionist supporter will cry “anti-Semite” and try to minimise the issue, Israel are the real terrorists in the Middle-East, only a Zionist supporter or a gullible fool would believe anything else.

14.my favourite TV channel is “MTV” music channel. “MTV” is probably the most popular in the world. This channel is always broadcast music. But there are also different programmes on this channel. For example: “12 fierce spectators”, “Full contact”, “Star dancefloor”, and many other programmes. But my favourite programme is “Star dancefloor”, this programme is broadcast the show, where 4 hip-hop dancers compete with each other in order to win. They dance hip hop, and the best dancer will win. The winner gets some presents from the show organizers. It’s really an interesting show, I think it’s very suitable for teenagers.Televisionis one of the wonderful gift of modern science. Like sadness and happiness are two aspects of our life similarly TV has both merits and demerits but it totally depend on the user that how he/she use it. Reminds us about our various rights.I totally agree them that TELEVISION can be a boon or curse, which totally depends on it's prudent and sensible use.And in many more ways it is helpful if taken in its true letter and spirit.

· 6 What is the difference between a newspaper and a magazine?I am currently bound to write about the difference between two supposedly similar things. It is quite obvious that the newspapers are larger than magazines in more ways than one. It is a general idea that even our Journalism books and professors have taught us that the newspaper is bigger than magazines. Various amounts of information are to be placed and compacted on a newspaper so it really does need to be a little bigger than magazines. It is seldom or maybe a rare occasion do we see a magazines that is as big as a newspapers or the other way around unless the newspapers is of a tabloid-type. A magazine tends to have a “book-type” size while the newspaper is really meant to be spread arms length in order for the reader to grasp its contents to the full. Newspapers can present and comment on the news in much detail in comparison to radio and TV newscasts. News- papers can cover much more events and news. Magazines do not focus on daily, rapidly changing events. They provide more profound analysis of events of preceeding week. Magazines are designed to be kept for a longer time so they have cover and binding and are printed on better paper.

38 Radio is widespread for its portability. The radio is turned on most of the time. creating a permanent background noise. It does not Interfere with our activities. 42.Mass media play an important role in our life. How and why do they shape public opinion ?If we consider the reasons why the media form the public opinion, firstly, we will notice, that in actual practice the ethics of the television and press provides an urgent support for the present order. Secondly, most of the mass media take into account the tastes of some social groups. While forming the public opinion inside such group, they create the communities which support them financially by watching the TV channel or buying the newspaper.

· Public television focuses mainly on education and culture. There are programs on wide range of subjects — from physics and literature to cooking and yoga. Public TV also broadcasts plays, ballets, symphonies as well as programs about art and history. Public TV attracts less viewers than commercial TV.

40.The USA was the leader in the production of films. The first sound film appeared in 1927. Soon coloured films appeared. The world of American cinema is so far-reaching.Hollywood (in Los Angeles, California), of course, immediately comes to mind, as do the many great directors, actors and actresses it continues to attract and produce. But then, one also thinks of the many independent studios throughout the country, the educational and documentary series and films, the socially-relevant tradition in cinema, and the film departments of universities, such as the University of Southern California (USC), the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) or New York University. For over 50 years, American films have continued to grow in popularity throughout the world. Television has only increased this popularity..Movies (films), including those on video-cassettes, remain the most popular art form in the USA. A book with 20,000 readers is considered to be a best-seller. A hit play may be seen by a few thousand theatergoers. By contrast, about a billion movie tickets are sold at movie houses across the USA every year.here are three main varieties of movie theaters in the USA: 1) the "first-run" movie houses, which show new films; 2) "art theaters", which specialize in showing foreign films and revivals; 3) "neighborhood theaters", which run films — sometimes two at a time — after the "first-run" houses.

50. How much do the media influence the modern society?Modern life is hardly possible without information. Of course friends & relatives keep us informed about what is happening in the world, but such information is second-hand, & therefore is not at all reliable. It is the mass media that provide us with first hand & reliable information

People can’t do without it because getting information is one of daily necessities of a human being. The first newspaper was printed in Italy in the 16th century. The firth newspaper in Russia appeared at the beginning of the 18th century. Press usually comments on matters and events of public interest, also it educate and entertain people. The first radio was invented by Alexander Popov in 1895 in Russia. Television is not as old as radio. Tel-n was born at the end of the 19th century. At present radio and television are considered to be one of the major sources of information in the world. It allows everybody to follow the events in far-away countries in good time without visiting them. It is impossible to overestimate the role of the radio and television nowadays.

.

43. Mass media are means of communication, such as radio, television, newspapers, magazines, which create a very large audience

.There are different ways of getting information — mass media, books, travelling, visiting museums, meeting people. Which do you prefer?

To live in the modern world is impossible without expanding your knowledge in all spheres. There are several ways of communicating the world to individuals — mass media, books, travelling, museums, meeting eminent people. Of all the existing ways, there are two which are the easiest ones, that is mass media and travelling. One more reason why I prefer them is that they provide the fullest and the most reliable information in the fields you are interested in. (For travelling, see 'Travelling'.)

Mass media play an important role in our life. How and why do they shape public opinion ?

Mass media play an important role in our life. They are usually defined by encyclopedias as any of the means of communication, such as radio, television, newspapers, magazines, etc. that reach and influence a very large audience, at least as large as the whole population of a nation. The term was coined in 1920s with emerging of nationwide radio networks and of mass-circulation newspapers and magazines. I believe mass media are so influential because they can be used for various purposes: popularisation, for business or social concerns (advertising, marketing, public relations, and political communication), education, entertainment, video and computer games, journalism, public service announcements. Media include radio and television, films, various types of discs or tapes used for music and computer, Internet, publishing on paper (books, magazines, and newspapers).

Mass media play a crucial role in forming public opinion. They do it in a number of ways: first, they communicate the world to individuals. Much of the news media is made up of newsgathering by large organizations. Just four main news agencies — AP, UPI, Reuters and Agence France Presse — claim together to provide 90 % of the total news output of the world's press, radio and television. Second, they reproduce modern society's self-image by forcing attention to certain issues. They build up public images of political figures. They are constantly presenting objects suggesting what individuals in the mass should think about, know about, have feelings about. Because some of the media produce material which often is good, impartial, and serious, they have respect and authority. If we look into the reasons why the mass media shape public opinion, we will see, first of all, that in practice the ethics of the press and television provides a vital support for the existing order. Second, many of the mass media in practice cater for the tastes of some social group. Shaping the public opinion inside this group, they create the audience which supports them financially by buying the newspaper or watching the TV channel.

But how much do the media influence the modern society? Early critiques suggested that the media destroys the individual's capacity to act autonomously. Later studies, however, suggest a more complex interaction between the media and society. People actively interprete and evaluate the media and the information it provides.

44.Mass media are so influential as they are used for popularisation for business and social concerns, education, entertainment, advertisements, and so on. Various mass media play a great role in our lives. While using mass media, people can learn very fast about the world news. Much of the media news is built up of newsgathering by large organizations. They also reproduce self-image of modern society by drawing attention to certain problems and issues. Media form images of politicians and other figures of consequence. They are presenting facts suggesting what individuals and facts in the mass media should know about, think about, and discuss about. If we consider the reasons why the media form the public opinion, firstly, we will notice, that in actual practice the ethics of the television and press provides an urgent support for the present order. Secondly, most of the mass media take into account the tastes of some social groups. 47.Mass media constantly force attention to certain issues, build up images of political figures and present various objects suggesting what people should think about them Mass media play a crucial role in forming public opinion. 46. The four main news agencies provide 90 % of the total news output of the world's press, radio and television..The mass media play an important part in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities for education and entertainment. They also influence the way we see the world and shape our views.Of course, not all newspapers and TV programmes report the events objectively, but serious journalists and TV reporters try to be fair and provide us with reliable information. It is true that the world today is full of dramatic events and most news seems to be bad news. But people aren't interested in ordinary events. That is why there are so many programmes and articles about natural disasters, plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies. Good news doesn't usually make headlines. Bad news does. Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on people's private lives. They follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them which are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate moments. The question is — should this be allowed? The main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that's an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it's much more difficult for politicians to lie in front of the cameras than on the pages of newspapers.Still, many people prefer the radio. It's good to listen to in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house.Newspapers don't react to events as quickly as TV, but they usually provide us with extra detail, comment and background information. The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don't have to wait for news time on TV.No doubt, is an important part of our life. People from different walks of life have become nowadays listeners, readers, viewers. Or in other words, reading newspapers and magazines, watching TV, listening to the news on the radio are our main means of getting information in all its variety. Newspapers with their enormous circulation report different kinds of news. They carry articles which cover the latest international and national events. Now people buy newspapers also for the radio and TV programmes which they publish. There are special newspapers which gave a full coverage of commercial, financial and publish affairs. There are newspapers and magazines for young people. They give a wide coverage of news, events and reports on education, sports, cultural life, entertainment, fashion. There are a lot of advertising programmes now, sensation material, too. They represent the views of today’s youth. Radio broadcasts are valued mainly for their music programmes (Europa plus). TV, radio, press reflect the present day life. Their information may vary from social and economic crises, conflicts, wars, disasters, earthquakes, to diplomatic visits, negotiations, from terrorism, corruption, to pollution problems, strikes, social movements. Much information is published concerning official governmental decisions. TV is the most popular kind of mass media now. Viewers are fond of watching variety show, films, sports, plays, games, educational and cultural programmes. We have many different channels, including commercial channels. There are many interesting and exciting programmes, but at the same time too often very primitive films are televised. I mean horror films, thrillers, detective films with all their cool-blooded atmosphere of violence and endless crimes and murders. Our family is also a mass media consumer. I have a TV set in my room. The culture programmes like “Kultura” are my mother’s favourite, my farther is a hockey fan, he likes to see sport programmes. I’m not keen on special programmes. I like to see a bit here and a bit there. Also, I can say I like programmes about travelling and traditions of another countries. Those programmes are educating and relaxing at the same time.

2.Television is much spoken about nowadays. It has both good and bad points. What are your arguments for and against watching TV?It goes without saying that television plays a very important part in people’s lives. It’s a wonderful source of information and one of the best ways to spend free time and not to feel bored. Television viewing is by far the most popular leisure pastime. TV channels show a great variety of programmes: documentaries and current affairs programmes, feature films and comedies, soaps and police series, concerts and talk shows. There are four main TV channels in Britain: BBC 1, BBC2 , ITV and Channel 4. BBC 1 and BBC 2 , the state channels, do not show adverts. ITV and Channel 4, the independent channels, show adverts. BBC 1 and ITV tend to televise popular programmes: sports programmes, recent films, news, game shows, children’s programmes and soaps. BBC 2 and Channel 4 show programmes which usually attract much smaller audiences: TV plays, classical concerts, foreign films and programmes for minority groups.Russian television has between 15-20 channels, which show all kinds of programmes: news and sports programmes, talk shows and quizzes, documentaries and feature films, soaps and police series, comedies and concerts.

Thanks to satellites, TV viewers can increase their options and watch TV from different countries.

Television is a reflection of the modern world. It gives you an opportunity to travel all over the world, to see different people, and learn about their customs and traditions. Television keeps you informed about the rest of the world. And of course, it helps you to escape from everyday problems.

A lot of people usually relax watching soaps- TV serials which dramatise their characters’ daily life. Their story lines are entertaining, but often unbelievable. I don’t think that they show life realistically; but to many people, the characters in the weekly TV serial shows have become more important than real people.

As for me, I prefer watching different quiz shows. Another thing I would like to complain about is the amount of smoking ,drinking , violence and sex in the films that are shown on TV. Smoking and drinking is often shown as very “cool” things to do- making young people much more likely to copy what they see, and take up smoking and drinking themselves. Some people say that television is a terrible waste of time. Of course, there are TV addicts who can’t drag themselves away from the box. They watch TV for hours without choosing programmes, and spend time in front of television which they could spend talking to their friends and family. In this case , television makes them really waste time. But on the contrary, if we watch TV for an hour a day, to find out what is happening in the world or to relax, then television is really useful. In short, television has its good points. Many of the broadcast programmes are educational and can help with schoolwork. A good soap opera or a comedy is a source of relaxation for many people. Television also provides jobs for thousands of people. So I think it is not the TV itself which is to blame for the bad effects it has, but the fact that people do not know how to make the best use of it.

1.There are different ways of learning about the world: through the mass media, books, traveling, visiting museums, meeting other people, etc. Which ways do you prefer to learn about the world? There are a lot of different ways of getting new information. In the past the only way to learn about the world was travelling. The first travellers were explorers who wanted to discover new lands. Nowadays, millions of people travel around the world either for pleasure or on business.

But to travel around the world you need a lot of money. That is why the main source of information for millions of people is mass media. Mass media includes newspapers and magazines, advertising , radio and television.

Television is a reflection of the modern world. It gives you an opportunity to travel all over the world, to see different people, and learn about their customs and traditions. Television keeps you informed about the rest of the world. When you need immediate information about the latest world events, you switch the TV on. There are always a great variety of programmes on TV: current affairs programmes and documentaries, plays and feature films, talks shows and TV games. A lot of people like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. Besides , TV has the power to educate and broaden our minds.

Some people think that the only way to be in the know of everything is to read newspapers and magazines. If you get on a bus or catch a train during the morning and evening “rush hours”, when most people travel to and from work, you’ll see a lot of people with their heads in a newspaper or a magazine. Newspapers are packed with the latest news, information, fashion and facts. They cater to a variety of political views, interests and levels of education. Papers are generally divided into “quality papers”, or broadsheets, and “popular papers” that are half the size of broadsheets. “Quality papers” are serious, with long, informative articles; while “popular papers” , known as “tabloids” , have a more sensational reporting style and contain more human interest stories than news. The two most popular British daily newspapers, The Sun and The Daily Mirror , are both tabloids. Tabloids sell more copies than broadsheets.

In Russia we also have these two types of newspapers. For example, Izvestiya or Kommersant are broadsheets. They contain political, business and cultural information. Such tabloids as Megapolis-Express and Express Gazeta contain the latest gossip, sensations and crossword puzzles. People choose a paper according to their tastes and preferences.

Though newspapers don’t react to events as quickly as TV, they usually provide us with extra details, commentaries and background information.

There are also a lot of magazines and other periodicals. Whatever your interest , there is likely to be a magazine about it- from sport, cookery, and farming, to religion, computers, cinema and more. Young people below the age of 18 do not buy newspapers; but they do buy magazines. Girls enjoy magazines about pop music, clothes, fashion and make-up; whereas boys prefer to read about sport, cars and computers. As far as I am interested in fashions I enjoy readingYes . It is a monthly magazine for girls containing the latest information about our favourite pop, film and soap stars, brilliant fashions and beauty, sports and romance. It approaches interesting subjects with intelligence and good humour. Besides, there is a lot of useful advice on various areas of life.

Still, many people prefer the radio. It’s good to listen to the radio in a car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house. Listeners can tune into all kinds of stations: pop or classical music, news, sport or foreign radio stations. People can often call in and ask questions about everything from cooking or car repair to politics or health. Callers often get a chance to give their opinions on the air. Besides, radio has fresher news than newspapers. They inform every half hour.

The Internet has recently become another important source of information. It is a computer system that allows millions of people around the world to receive and exchange information about almost everything. The main use of the Internet is to find information-for your schoolwork or job, or just to find out more about your hobbies, sports or current events. All the latest information is available to you in your home, at any hour of the day and night. It’s much faster and easier to surf the net in search of information from all over the world than to travel to libraries in dozens of countries.

However, the real world of the Internet may not be as perfect as it seems. With so much information available , finding what you want can take you hours.

With so many modern forms of finding information , such as radio, TV and the Internet, people read fewer books, newspapers and magazines. Nowadays, most people consider television their most important source of information. In my opinion, we can’t say exactly which source of information is the best. It depends on what kind of information you need.

17. Do you like soap operas?
Many people watch soap operas because they find them enjoyable and realistic. Other points of view are quite the opposite. Some people believe that such sort of films can be very dangerous and unhealthy for ones personality because they demonstrate false life values.I suppose that soap operas are low-quality products of film industry. They take advantage of bad human desires and intentions. To my mind, soap operas humiliate life values and reduce human self-appreciation. Besides, this sort of films trains people not to think, use easy-to-get source of fun and pleasure. Soap operas train people not to work on distracting hidden meaning. Moreover, the audience gets used to see only light meaning, lying on the surface of the film. A person brought up on such light principles is not able to express deep feelings, to feel something as deep as real love, friendship. And as a result, such a person can commit a crime and will not feel ashamed. On the other hand, some people claim that after a hard day they need to rest, enjoy something really funny, something that is able to draw them away from the problems and the stress atmosphere of the real life. In addition, people state that they sometimes want their heads be free from heavy thoughts. Still, I fully disagree with them.
Such an escape seems to me very dangerous and addictive. Once you try to escape from the reality and enjoy light, not demanding deep involvement into the performance - and you are caught forever. Naturally, this source of easy-to-get fun and pleasure will swallow you up.
In conclusion, Id like to say that principles and values that soap operas demonstrate are destructive for a human personality that needs to be constantly evolved and educated. I think that it is by all means possible to enjoy thought-provoking things instead of light soap operas.

Acta Diurna (latin: Daily Acts sometimes translated as Daily Public Records) were daily Roman official notices, a sort of daily gazette. They were carved on stone or metal and presented in message boards in public places like the Forum of Rome. They were also called simply Acta or Diurna or sometimes Acta Popidi or Acta Publica. The first form of Acta appeared around 131 BCE during the Roman Republic. Their original content included results of legal proceedings and outcomes of trials. Later the content was expanded to public notices and announcements and other noteworthy information such as prominent births, marriages and deaths. After a couple of days the notices were taken down and archived (though no intact copy has survived to the present day).

Sometimes scribes made copies of the Acta and sent them to provincial governors for information. Later emperors used them to announce royal or senatorial decrees and events of the court.Other forms of Acta were legal, municipal and military notices. Acta Senatus were originally kept secret, until then-consul Julius Caesar made them public in 59 BC. Later rulers, however, often censored them.Publication of the Acta Diurna stopped when the seat of the emperor was moved to Constantinople.

The Acta Diurna to some extent filled the place of the modern newspaper and of the government gazette. Today, there are many academic periodicals with the word acta in their titles (the publisher Elsevier has 64 such titles).Acta Diurna introduced the expression “publicare et propagare”, which means "make public and propagate." This expression was set in the end of the texts and proclaimed a release to both Roman citizens and non-citizens.

"Acta Diurna" was also used as the title of a neo-Latin newspaper, published by Centaur Books.

40. The USA was the leader in the production of films. The cinema of the United States, often generally referred to as Hollywood, has had a profound effect on cinema across the world since the early 20th century. Its history is sometimes separated into four main periods: the silent film era, classical Hollywood cinema,New Hollywood, and the contemporary period. While the French Lumière Brothers are generally credited with the birth of modern cinema, it is indisputably American cinema that soon became the most dominant force in an emerging industry. Since the 1920s, the American film industry has grossed more money every year than that of any other country. In 1878, Eadweard Muybridge demonstrated the power of photography to capture motion. In 1894, the world's first commercial motion picture exhibition was given in New York City, using Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope. The United States was in the forefront of sound filmdevelopment in the following decades. Since the early 20th century, the U.S. film industry has largely been based in and aroundHollywood, Los Angeles, California. Picture City, FL was also a planned site for a movie picture production center in the 1920s, but due to the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane, the idea collapsed and Picture City returned to its original name of Hobe Sound. Director D. W. Griffith was central to the development of film grammar. Orson Welles's Citizen Kane (1941) is frequently cited in critics' polls as the greatest film of all time.[6]American screen actors like John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe have become iconic figures, while producer/entrepreneur Walt Disneywas a leader in both animated film and movie merchandising. The major film studios of Hollywood are the primary source of the most commercially successful movies in the world, such as Gone with the Wind (1939), Star Wars (1977), Titanic (1997), and Avatar (2009). Today, American film studios collectively generate several hundred movies every year, making the United States the third most prolific producer of films in the world, after Indian Cinema (Tamil Cinema, Telugu Cinema, Hindi Cinema, etc.) and Nollywood.[7]

Paramount is the fifth oldest surviving film studio in the world behind Universal Studios, Nordisk Film, Pathé, and Gaumont Film Company.[3] It is the last major film studio still headquartered in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles.

Paramount Pictures dates its existence from the 1912 founding date of the Famous Players Film Company. Founder Hungarian-bornAdolph Zukor, who had been an early investor in nickelodeons, saw that movies appealed mainly to working-class immigrants.[4]With partners Daniel Frohman and Charles Frohman he planned to offer feature-length films that would appeal to the middle class by featuring the leading theatrical players of the time (leading to the slogan "Famous Players in Famous Plays"). By mid-1913, Famous Players had completed five films, and Zukor was on his way to success.

That same year, another aspiring producer, Jesse L. Lasky, opened his Lasky Feature Play Company with money borrowed from his brother-in-law, Samuel Goldfish, later known as Samuel Goldwyn. The Lasky company hired as their first employee a stage director with virtually no film experience, Cecil B. DeMille, who would find a suitable location site in Hollywood, near Los Angeles, for his first feature film, The Squaw Man.The primary steps in the commercialization of sound cinema were taken in the mid- to late 1920s. At first, the sound films incorporating synchronized dialogue—known as "talking pictures", or "talkies"—were exclusively shorts; the earliest feature-length movies with recorded sound included only music and effects. The first feature film originally presented as a talkie was The Jazz Singer, released in October 1927. A major hit, it was made with Vitaphone, the leading brand of sound-on-disc technology. Sound-on-film, however, would soon become the standard for talking pictures.

By the early 1930s, the talkies were a global phenomenon. In the United States, they helped secure Hollywood's position as one of the world's most powerful cultural/commercial systems (see Cinema of the United States.

39. Public TV also broadcasts plays, ballets, symphonies as well as programs about art and history. Television, also called TV, is one of our most important means of communication. It brings moving pictures and sounds from around the world into millions of homes. The name «Television» comes from Greek word meaning «far», and a Latin word meaning «to see», so the word «television» means «to see far».About three-fourths of the 1500 TV stations in the US are commercial stations. They sell advertising time to pay for their operating costs and to make profit. The rest are public stations, which are nonprofit organizations.Commercial TV stations broadcast mostly entertainment programs because they must attract larger number of viewers in order to sell advertising time at high prices. These programs include light dramas called situation comedies; action-packed dramas about life of detectives, police officers, lawyers and doctors; shows featuring comedians, dancers and singers; movies; quiz shows; soap operas; cartoons. Commercial TV broadcasts also documentaries and talk shows. Documentary is dramatic, but nonfictional presentation of information. It can be programs about people, animals in faraway places or programs on such issues as alcoholism, drug abuse, racial prejudice. On talk shows a host interviews politicians, TV and movie stars, athlets, authors. There are also sport programs and brief summaries of local, national and international news. Advertising is an important part of commercial TV. Commercials appear between and during most programs. They urge viewers to buy different kinds of products — from dog food to hair spray, and from cars to insurance policies.Public television focuses mainly on education and culture. There are programs on wide range of subjects — from physics and literature to cooking and yoga. Public TV also broadcasts plays, ballets, symphonies as well as programs about art and history. Public TV attracts less viewers than commercial TV.

45. Mass media play a crucial role in forming public opinion, because, first, they communicate the world to individuals, second, they reproduce the modern society's self-image, third, they cater for the tastes of some social group.Mass media play a crucial role in forming public opinion.
