Florence Nightingale.

Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820.

She was the pioneer of modern nursing. Each year, the International Nurses Day is celebrated on her birth anniversary.

Born into a wealthy and well-connected British family at the 'Villa Colombaia' in Florence, Italy, she was named after the city of her birth.Florence and her sister, Parthenope, were tutored by their father in languages, mathematics, and history.

In 1844 Nightingale decided that she wanted to work in hospitals. Her

family objected strongly to her plan. She then received permission from her parents to spend a few months at Kaiserworth, a German training school for nurses and female teachers. In 1851 she rejected the marriage proposal of politician and poet Richard Monckton Milnes, against her mother's wishes.

On August 12, 1853, Nightingale became superintendent at the Institute for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen in Upper Harley Street, London. Her father had given her an annual income of £500 (roughly $50,000 in present terms) that allowed her to live comfortably and to pursue her career.

Her most famous contribution was during the Crimean War (1853–56), in which Great Britain, France, and Sardinia fought against Russia. In October of 1854 Nightingale organized a party of thirty-eight nurses, for service in the Crimean War.

She arrived early in November 1854. In Scutari (modern-day Üsküdar in Istanbul, Turkey) Nightingale and her nurses found wounded soldiers being badly cared for by overworked medical staff . Medicines were in short supply, hygiene was being neglected, and mass infections were common, many of them fatal. There was no equipment to process food for the patients. Nightingale and her compatriots began by thoroughly cleaning the hospital and equipment, and reorganizing patient care. Although she met resistance from the doctors and officers, her changes vastly improved conditions for the wounded.  She treated 2,000 patients herself. Nightingale's work inspired massive public support throughout England, where she was celebrated and admired as "The Lady with the Lamp". Nightingale's lamp also allowed her to work late every night, maintaining  medical records for the hospital, and writing personal letters to the family of every soldier who died in the hospital. Florence Nightingale played the central role in the establishment of the Royal Commission on the Health of the Army. In 1860 she opened a school for nurses at St. Thomas` hospital inLondon.

Florence Nightingale wrote Notes on Nursing which was published in 1860, a slim 136-page book that served as the cornerstone of the curriculum at the Nightingale School and other nursing schools established. Notes on Nursing also sold well to the general reading public and is considered as a classic introduction to nursing.

Nightingale spent the rest of her life promoting the establishment and development of the nursing profession and organizing it into its modern form.In 1883, Nightingale was awarded the Royal Red Cross by Queen Victoria. In 1904, she was appointed a Lady of Grace of the Order of St John (LGStJ). In 1907, she became the first woman to be awarded the Order of Merit. On 13 August 1910, at the age of 90, she died peacefully in her sleep in her room at 10 South Street, Mayfair, London .
