Parentheses at the End or in the Middle of the Sentence
In the middle or at the end of the sentence parenthetical words and phrases are generally pronounced as the unstressed of half stressed tail of the preceding intonation-group.

Exercise 1. Read the following conversational situations. Mark the stresses and tunes in the replies:
1. Where do you go? – I think we prefer the Crimea.
2. What about indoor games? – Well, there’s chess, billiards, cards, table tennis. By the way, do you play tennis?
3. And how are things with you? – Not too good, I’m afraid.
4. You’re thirty-five, aren’t you? – As a matter of fact I’m nearly forty.
5. Are you fond of music? – Of course I am.
6. Is it possible to see anything of Moscow in one or two days? – Well, yes, but not half enough.
7. Why not go to the Tretyakov Gallery? – I think I will.
8. The Tretyakov Gallery is much too big to be seen in an hour or so. – I suppose it is.
9. What about a trip on the Moskva river? – That’s not a bad idea you know. I think that’s a good idea.
Exercise 2. Read the following sentences. Mark the stresses and tunes:
- Normally, we go for a walk in the evening.
- Personally, I’ve always wanted to be a teacher.
- However, he is always ten minutes late.
- By the way, may I open the window?
- For instance, when driving, they keep to the left-hand side of the road in England.
- A walking holiday depends upon the weather, of course.
- A cowardly thing to do, I call it.
- Tastes differ, you know.
- Just the same, so far.
- We shall go to the see, I expect.
Exercise 3. Make up sentences using the following parenthetical words and phrases at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of them. Use hem in conversational situations:
