Вездесущность светового загрязнения и нынешние возможности спектральной адаптации с применением LED-технологий делает чрезвычайно важным понимание влияния искусственного света на разные этапы жизни птиц и дает возможность предсказывать долгосрочные последствия на популяционном уровне. Непосредственное влияние искусственного света, такое как смертность птиц из-за нарушения миграций или привлечения птенцов светом уже может связано относительно легко. Однако, для того, чтобы смягчить воздействия от продолжительного ночного света на населенных участках необходимо больше исследований. Детальное изучение этого воздействия должно включать последствия (стресс) от искусственного света на физиологию, циркадные и сезонные ритмы, изобилие и синхронизацию видов-жертв на освещенных территориях и влияние на хищников. На сегодняшний день, большинство исследований влияния искусственного света коррелятивные. Для того, чтобы отличать влияние света от других факторов – антропогенного и естественного вместе, существует особая нужда в экспериментальных исследованиях.
Потенциальное направление смягчения – использование света с различным волновым диапазоном [Gaston et al., 2012]. Нам также необходимо поставить полевые эксперименты для изучения влияния разных цветов света на разные этапы жизни птиц. Последнее и наиболее вызывающее – нам нужно посмотреть на долгосрочное влияние, начиная с оценки последствий для здоровья от искусственного света. Это должно быть масштабированно для популяционных последствий и связано с интенсивностью света (как далеко от источников света влияние все еще присутствует). Эти исследования должны включать множество видов, как влияние на виды-жертвы каскадируется через пищевую цепочку.

Чтобы найти ответы на вопросы, расположенные выше, полевые эксперименты недавно начались в Нидерландах, где, в долгосрочном мониторинговом проекте наличие и плотность многих видов и видовых групп наблюдается в экспериментально освещенных местах. На каждом месте (все на опушке леса) всегда проводится 4 процедуры по отдельным трансектам: свет с удаленным зеленым компонентом (зеленоватый), свет с удаленным синим компонентом (красноватый), белый свет и контроль в темноте. Спектры выбраны таким образом, что свет остается пригодным для гражданского использования. Оценка была сделана для видов, присутствовавших до применения освещения и в течение трех лет изменения в видах и в составах видов тщательно мониторится (www.lich-topnatuur.org). Эксперименты как этот ответят на вопрос об экологическом воздействии искусственного света разных длин волн. Однако, нужно намного больше подобных экспериментов, например, в разных местообитаниях, чтобы получить комплексный обзор.

Учитывая степень светового загрязнения – две трети населения мира живут на светозагрязненных территориях – это невероятно, как мало мы знаем об экологическом воздействии светового загрязнения. Пока есть ряд хороших исследований, которые показывают влияние искусственного света на индивидуальное поведение, то, чего не хватает, так это исследований последствий для здоровья от такого влияния и того, как число популяции зависит от светового загрязнения.
