Механико-математический факультет основан в 1907 году. На факультете готовят студентов в области технологии машиностроения, машиноведения, проектирование машин, компьютерное моделирование технических систем, автоматизация оборудования и производственных процессов, технологии управления инновациями, промышленный дизайн.

Для выпускников факультета характерны глубокая общенаучная и широкая гуманитарно-экономическая подготовка; высокая физико-математическая культура и компьютерная грамотность: умение использовать в работе современное программное обеспечение. Фундаментальная общетехническая и специальная подготовка позволяет выпускнику ММФ быть конкурентоспособным на рынке труда, быстро адаптироваться в конкретных условиях, успешно продвигаться по ступенькам деловой карьеры; создавать, исследовать и внедрять (implement) новые высокоэффективные машины и технологии. В настоящее время на факультете работают 39 докторов и 94 кандидатов наук.

Михаил Ильич Кошкин родился 3 декабря 1898 года в деревне Брынчаги Ярославской губернии в многодетной семье. Глава семейства вскоре погиб на лесоразработках (logging area) и Михаилу с ранних лет пришлось думать, как заработать на кусок хлеба. В 1935 году он оканчивает Ленинградский политехнический институт. Еще будучи студентом “политеха” он начал работать в конструкторском бюро знаменитого Кировского завода. Получив диплом, он приходит в этот коллектив на постоянную работу. В то время ленинградцы трудились над созданием бронетанковой (armoured) мощи молодого советского государства. Позже, Кошкин возглавил конструкторское бюро завода №183. В 1940 году, менее чем через год после изготовления нескольких прототипов, были изготовлены и переданы на войсковые испытания 2 экспериментальных танка Т-34. Эти испытания полностью подтвердили высокие технические и боевые качества (battle merits) нового танка. В октябре 1940 года было начато серийное производство танка Т-34, сыгравшего огромную роль для победы над фашизмом
