The University had become his world. His idol was Professor Edward, head of the department of chemistry, who was universally knows as “Encore”. Edward’s knowledge of the history of chemistry was immense. He could read Arabic, and he influenced has fellow chemists by asserting that the Arabs had anticipated all their researches. Himself, Professor Edwards never did researches. He sat before fires and stroked his collie and chuckled in his beard.
In college Martin had not belonged to a Greek Letter secret society. He had been “rushed”, but he had resented the condescension of the aristocracy of men from the largest cities. Now that most of his classmates had departed to insurance offices, law school, and banks he was lonely, and tempted by an invitation from Digamma Pi, the chief medical fraternity.
Digamma Pi was a lively boarding – house with a billiard table and low prices. Rough and amiable noises came from it at night, and a good deal of singing about When I Die Don’t Bury Me at All; yet for three years Digamma had won the valedictory and the Hugh Loizeau Medal in Experimental Surgery.

Музыка открывает человеку дверь в другой мир. В этом мире можно обойтись без слов — здесь царят звуки. Музыка успокаивает или возбуждает, веселит или заставляет грустить. Она владеет душой человека, если тот способен ее слушать. А «глухих» к музыке людей фактически нет.
Музыка заставляет замирать зал, внимающий нежным звукам скрипки или мощным звукам целого оркестра. Она звучит внутри нас, и мы поем «домашними» голосами, а то и вовсе без них, потому что желаем выразить свои чувства таким образом. Мы слышим музыку в журчании ручья и в шепоте листвы, в завывании ветра и стуке капели.
Чем же объясняется ее необыкновенная власть над человеком? Может быть, она и есть тот самый универсальный язык, с помощью которого могут без переводчика общаться люди разных национальностей? Ученые установили, что музыкой можно лечить, с ее помощью можно улучшить усвоение новой информации, но все-таки главное ее предназначение — касаться глубоких струн человеческой души и звучать в гармонии с окружающим миром.

Stereotyping: A Shorthand Way of Thinking
A stereotype is a standardized conception or image of a specific group of people or objects. Stereotypes are ‘mental cookie cutters’ – they force a simple pattern upon a complex mass and assign a limited number of characteristics to all members of a group. While we commonly use the term as it is applied to human beings, it is quite possible to stereotype objects as well. In popular cultures we can examine both types of stereotypes so that we often find people stereotyped around characteristics of age (“All teenagers love rock and roll and have no respect for their elders.”), religion (“All Catholics love the Pope more than their country.”), vocation(“All lawyers are greedy weasels.”) and nationality (“All Germans are Nazi warmongers.”). Objects can be stereotyped around characteristics of places (“All cities are corrupt and sinful.” “Small towns are safe and clean.” “In England it rains all the time.”) and things (“All American cars are cheaply and ineptly made.” “A good house has a large lawn, big garage, and at least two bathrooms.”).
