Materials are solid substances of which manufactured products are made. A variety of materials are used in different products. Materials range from wood to composite materials. Building materials can be divided into two main groups: natural and man-made. Stone and timber are natural materials, used by constructors since ancient times. Man-made materials include brick, cement, concrete, steel, glass, metal and more modern materials including plastic and synthetic materials. The use of materials is determined by cost, structural and aesthetic qualities. The distinction must be made between natural and artificial stone. The principal variety of artificial stone is brick. Mortar is also an artificial material. Cement is a mix of lime, sand and water. The main kinds of timber are oak and pine. Timber is the only material with which an entire house may be built. There are 3 kinds of iron used in construction – cast-iron, pure iron and steel.

In 1980s Computer-Aided Design (CAD) programs drastically cut the needs of draftsmen. CAD is software which allows using computer technology for design of curves and figures in 2D or curves, surfaces and solids in 3D objects. CAD has many applications: automotive, shipbuilding and aerospace industries, industrial (in the design of tools and machinery and throughout the engineering process from conceptual design and layout of products) and architectural design (of all types of buildings), computer animation and the creation of photo simulations. CAD can also allow rotations in 3D, and the designed object is viewed from any angle. Today CAD systems exist for all the major platforms and no special hardware is required. The interface “human-machine” is usually made via a computer mouse. The advantages of CAD are lower product development costs and a greatly shortened design cycle. Graphic designers compulsorily learn CAD at colleges.

New cooks often have troubles describing how food tastes. This guide will help you discuss how taste buds respond to different foods. Coffee and tea have a bitter flavor. Many people add sugar to make them sweet. Some fruits, like lemons and oranges, are both sweet and sour. Some warm meals are spicy, but many people dislike the burning feeling. You can make any meal salty if you simply add salt to the finished product. Adding fresh herbs or poultry seasoning can make soups more savory. Many candies and gums are minty and are used to control bad breath. These products likely leave an aftertaste. For example, the tea tastes fine at first but then it has a bad aftertaste. The cooks should also remember: never let the wrong measurements ruin your recipe! For preventing bad taste use a pot for boiling and steaming. Large batches of soup are best cooked in a stock pot. Smaller batches and sauces are fine in a sauce pan. Always use a double boiler with your foods.
